Newcomer / Intro I Love it so far, beginner impressions

Hello all, I'm a relatively new player, so far almost a week in. So, first off I gotta say this game is beautiful. Now, as a new player, I was a bit frustrated at first. Learning how to fight, scoop cargo, dock and thousands of other things. Was kinda intimidated, however I found things came really quick, a lot faster then expected. Progress was near a standstill until I got a flight stick, made everything amazing, more immersion and just overall great.

Started out running a few missions, then fitted for mining.. Did that for like 10k or so creds, then got bored.. So I switched to my main goal.. bounty hunting. So far made like.. 60k cred, within a few hours, compared to a total of like 20k between the last 4 days playing.. So yeah, loving it. :) Saving for my viper.

Anyway, just figured I'd say this game seems amazing, and cant wait to be here as it progresses. Only advice I have for other new players like myself, invest in a flight stick, its well worth it. Its easily playable with a mouse, however I couldn't stand it and have way more fun with my flight stick. :)

Hopefully my next post I'll have a decent ship and some useful advice for new players like myself haha. :)

Welcome!

The viper is a great ship for combat, so if that's what you want, you are going in the right direction :)

I'd liker to echo that too, a flight stick makes a huge difference.

I'm just doing station missions so far.

Update 3/5/2015

So far, I've made a couple hundred thousand cred bounty hunting, upgraded to a viper and done a few small upgrades to that. Currently experimenting with different loadouts for bounty hunting. I'm loving gimballed lazers and multis, however I should probably get better with fixed for when I go into open play for player hunting..

My question to anyone reading this, is what is the best viper loadouts for bounty hunting (npc and player, though npc is my current focus)? Also, where are the best places to get better upgrades? Also a major question.. How do I make it so i can fire longer? I upgraded to a B3 power distributor and a better power plant, however my lazers still don't fire as long as I'd like.. How can I make them fire even longer?

I need to find a station to upgrade to better weapons as well, what should I look for?

And last but not least, when I'm fighting bigger ships I know targetting the power plant is instakill if destroyed, however whats the best way to do this and successfully destroy it? What weapons work best and just general tips on this will help me a ton.

Thanks all,

loadouts look for high tech systems, as for firing wepons longer have you set your fire groups? you dont want them all going off at once, get the best power distributor you can afford.. good luck cmdr.

Welcome to the void!

A stick can/does make a big difference, as you've said much more immersion.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it.

Good Luck out there.

Regards

Thanks guys! And yes I set fire groups, I have my first setup with lasers on my trigger and kws on my secondary fire. Then a second setup with lasers secondary and trigger as multis. Trying to get the best upgrades I can, going to be wandering off to a high tech system soon as I log on again and bounty hunt there so I can upgrade as i hunt. ^_^

The best setup for a Viper varies somewhat by personal preference. However, there are some principles you should always follow:

  • Kinetic weapons should go on medium hardpoints - look for class E2/F2 multicannon, for example. The reason for this is that there is a damage penalty when hitting ships with kinetics. Damage is reduced by 33% per difference in class. Therefore, small multicannon will take a 33% damage reduction when hitting medium vessels and a 66% reduction against large vessels. A medium multicannon has no damage modifier against medium and small ships, and only 33% against the big snakes.
  • The Viper really shines when it has the A3 shield. Kilo-for-kilo, it's the best shield in the game, or is right up there.
  • Avoid B class kit. It's heavily armoured, but this comes at the expense of weight and therefore maneuverability. The Viper is not a good tank.
  • The kill warrant scanner is really useful for bounty-hunting, but it's a massive power hog. An A0 KWS needs too much power, especially as the A3 power plant only puts out 12MW.
  • Shield cell banks introduce similar power issues. Only equip one, and make sure its priority is set to 2 in order to keep the rest of your ship functioning when the hardpoints are deployed. Ask yourself if you really need one.

With regard to taking in really big ships, it's useful to know the weak spots.

Anacondas are big, mean bar stewards. Big mean bar stewards with weak armour in the thrusters. It's much easier to take out their thrusters first, then address the power plant.

Asps are generally very tough ships, except when their power plants are targeted. They feel like they're made of paper then. This is about the only ship I'd recommend a B5 power plant for, as they're not particularly maneuverable anyway, and greatly benefit from the extra armour.

Pythons are all round generally tough ships. The power plant is not a weak spot per se, but nowhere else I've found is, so you might as well go for the jugular. I haven't tried targeting sensors yet though. The same is true for Dropships. They're just that somewhat bulky, dangerous-looking bloke in the pub. No obvious weak spots.

Update 3/8/2015

So, I've upgraded my ship plenty, I kill pretty much any npc with a bounty with relative ease. A3 power distributor, B3 power plant, B3 Shields, gimballed beams and m-cannons. May stray away from the gimball just a bit, especially once I decide to come over to open play.

I feel like I should try other aspects of the game before switching to open though. Piracy and trading are 2 I'd like to experiment with, maybe exploration eventually..

Piracy is a tricky one, since I want to be a bounty hunter, and thats pretty much my nemesis. However, it does seem fun and its never a bad thing to get into the mindset of my enemy. Who knows, maybe I'll like it better?

So, questions... First off.

Is it possible for me to go on a piracy binge without effecting me in any way for bounty hunting later on? (figuring I'll have to die in order to wipe bounties or pay them)

If yes, what should I get for a pirate ship / loadout?

Also, any other tips for switching to open play as a bounty hunter? And is there any dedicated bounty hunting groups? (I've seen dedicated piracy groups so far)

Thanks guys, till next time..

First off never turn to the dark side!!!! But if you do go pirate i would say go with a Cobra MkIII for your ship. Weapons would stay the simular to what you have now. You would want a cargo scanner, heat sink and a hatch breaker limpet for sure, cause the npcs tend to only drop cargo after/just before you blow them up. Also now the location of a few black markets and learn to smuggle into any star port (youtube). You could go all pirate with out it affecting your later bounty hunting as long as you target ships in independent systems or anarchy systems. I would keep note of the places you have bounty on your head so you don't just fly in there to refuel or something and then get blown up or something!

The viper is by far and away the best bounty hunting/assassin/combat ship I have found! When you learn to fly better you will be able to take down anacondas solo...with no help! It takes work but you can do it!

Also if you turn pirate keep a an eye out for me cause I will be comeing for you! :D

Thanks for the advice! So far I sold my viper and I'm doing trading for a bit, just to raise some more funds. Once I'm done I'll likely go back to bounty hunting. Not really sure if I'll even bother with piracy though I think I'd rather bounty hunt lol. I enjoy being able to destroy peoples ships without getting in any trouble heh. :)

Piracy is probably the lowest earner. People do it because they like it, not because they want to get rich!

Yea I figured piracy wasnt a big earner, might try it just to get into the mindset of my targets though heh.

Been doing trading most of today, figured out somewhat on how to find routes. Got one thats like 6 ly away, takes 10 min 1 way and 6 min the other.. makes like 120k in 15-16 min or so, not too bad I guess. I can only take 60t of cargo at the moment in my cobra till I upgrade to a new ship, or get bored sell everything and get my viper back for bounty hunting lol. Not too bad so far though, really liking the profit even with low cargo space.. If I can work my way to an actual cargo ship I may do this for a bit. That way I can have a decent sized cargo ship and a bounty hunting ship. Maybe if the profits are good enough, grab an explorer too just for fun. Wouldn't mind doing some exploration :)

Well, the good explorers also happen to make good armed traders - the Adder, the Cobra and the Asp.

500kcr an hour in a Cobra is good going. Don't tell anyone your route! If the security is good, save up a couple of million and buy a T6. That will double the amount of cargo you can carry at the expense of horrible weapons and shields. Practise your best brave Sir Robin impression and milk the route for credits. You'll find that the numbers begin to flatten out and your profits drop, but it should be good for a few million or more if the population is high enough at both stations. That will put you firmly on your way to whatever you want to do.

Well running with no weps and shields is already what i do, so that wont be a problem. :p I'm doing it in solo so all I have to worry about is npc pirates.. I do get interdicted fairly often, but most of the time i can beat the interdiction and not have to submit. Npcs apparently arent pro at the minigame. ^_^
