Competition for elite?

Caution... One of the developers in another thread said the look of X:R was ahead of ED and that some of the ships cockpits will likely be similar to that within X:R. Do not overhype your expectations of Elite!

Care to share reference? :) Because no ED developer has said that, and all ship cockpits are 3D holograms.

One thing I didn't really like about it was piloting the space craft. It just moves left or right in stead of rolling.

Just a quick note that this is not true - it's full range of motion, including roll :) Yes, it can strafe as well...but that doesn't preclude rolling!

And good call on the superbox, am considering the same myself! :D

Although the ship seems to have the strange tendency to auto-roll back to the "correct" orientation the devs have chosen for you once you release the controls.

I'm not very impressed by the graphics either, they're colourful I guess, just not very spacey. Stations are huge, but space itself feels small... odd feeling really.

I believe you can turn the auto roll off in the options.

Strongly suggest you read the player feedback on their own XR forums before purchasing the game - unless they have cleaned them up by now. Even forum mods are highly critical of the game ... when that happens, perhaps caution is the best approach.

Few twitch live streams happening as well. I would not put any faith in the promo vids. Eye candy and marketing slogans can only go so far.

What like this you mean...;)

Elite will have cockpits just like this one and you're not going to be able to toggle them off either. X Rebirth and Elite share a very similar vision when it comes to how you experience the game.

We're both saying that you play the game through the eyes of the pilot which means you do see the inside of your ship and you do look around and have camera motion that matches that of a head lolling about within the cockpit as you fly around.

When you want to walk around your ship you just stand up and then your walking around in first person, seamlessly. This creates an incredible level of immersion and will make even more sense if and when we get Oculus Rift or TrackIR support. Hell even just using the mouse to look around within your cockpit would be incredibly useful when flying your ship.

If X Rebirth is a no-go because of the choice of cockpit then why isn't Elite?

Secondly on the single ship only issue. I think some of you are missing the benefits such a premise can provide. The attention to detail they can apply to that ship is incredible let alone the amount of bespoke customisation options. You will get attached to it and you will be able to make it your own. Having multiple ships basically means you cut back on those aspects above. The single ship also means a good narrative can be more easily created around it which being a single player game makes a lot of sense.

I am of the opinion that if Elite Dangerous just gave you a Cobra MkIII to play with it would actually make for a compelling experience. The amount of customisation and polish we could add to it would be incredible.

That said, they do have VERY nice cockpit shadows.

Yes makes it look very realistic ...

'oh look dear, that trading ship just flew right through the station without a scratch.'

'How did you see that, I cant even rotate my view past this damn fixed cockpit view, nor do I have any external views without launching a damn drone which I still havn't figured out how to do! .... and stop calling me 'dear' Yisha! .. damn android ... eye blinking chip don't even work'

hmmm , wasnt that was before rift was suported by ED? so it is statements about intent not the final version of X

The rift bit yes, but it was a follow on comment from this:

What's with all the hate towards X Rebirth? Graphically this looks far better than what we have currently, the cockpit looks amazing and the interface elements and animation within it are also stunning.

Control wise the fact they've gone all out on trying to streamline the whole thing is admirable and the control scheme they're using is actually very good and very similar to what we have at the moment.

The point being people from within Elite have given praise to the things they believe X did well and which are similar to the path Elite is going, including cockpit design, structurally.

Pecisk i was referring to the build, not the HUD.

Why the cockpit takes 1/3 of the screen? It's just an eye candy for most part. Is it for the purpose of mitigating frame rate issues that would be even more glaring if there cockpit would take less of screen estate (i.e. the engine doesn't have to draw pixels that are out of view).

Can we please have more functional cockpit in ED? Please?!
In one sentence: a highway system makes space travel vastly more interesting (although I know hardcore Elite fans are opposed to that idea)
Also, the highways are fun? WHAT?! I understand you want to be ALWAYS entertained, you can't allow yourself for a minute of pause and just enjoy the scenery. This system is repetitive, dull, and doesn't add anything to immersion. It's a gimmick, similar to "walk in station"

Also, the requirements for activating jumpdrive or FSD are much lower than being a "hardcore Elite" gamer.

having now read the other thread (ty for the point out) i cant help wonder how accurate those statements still are(and possibly how misleading they were intended to be by this time ;) ). yes the two games have several simerlarities of vision , but lets be frank X hasnt got Mr B , the word elite or even jumpers

Ok, you were talking about that Mike's comment :)

If you have read mostly people here don't complain about cockpit, but about other aspects of the XR and how untested and buggy everything in whole package feels. I know lot of classic X fans does indeed cry foul about cockpit's interface. For me cockpit looks "okeish", don't see it as big problem, however it should have done better with more testing and careful tweaking. I guess problem with XR is that you should also your trade management trough that interface, which in case can be huge problem, it could be done better. I think XR alpha test was badly done and that shows. Game play concepts aren't fully fleshed out. But I disagree with people who say that they are plainly wrong.

Does ED and XR share similar interface ideology for cockpit's GUI? I fully agree with Mike - yes, it does, but it will look like part of ship's interface (and I personally don't care that it looks like console-ation, as long keyboard/mouse works very well within it's setting). XR biggest problem is that it doesn't. They could easily deal with this with overlay on screen. They should have done alpha testing or even design/prototype testing to understand what works and what doesn't. It feels clunky, and slow - to call fleet's ship to you you need to find right combination of numbers and then side menu appears. There are always people who wants you to keep doing old thing, of course, but if you do something new, be sure to deliver, otherwise you will get both newcomers and old ones angry.

So while it remains to be seen will ED concept of interface be success, and we will get to test it a lot during alpha and beta, I really like what I have seen and heard so far.

I am not so sure about "one ship argument" being good or bad. It is very strange game play for me, but I wouldn't deride any game using this concept. I kinda agree with Mike it could be interesting game play done right. Just Elite isn't such game, therefore we have tons of ship to fly. Still, I will enjoy Sidewinder, as I will enjoy any other ship I will upgrade to. I think lot of people rush too much to "biggest and baddest" space games. There's no "win" scenario after all.

If I had to develop XR I would personally went for stationary mode, having myself a huge ship, in which I have my team, my HQ, I would fly around, issuing commands for my fleet, etc. I think biggest problem for XR that it wants to be both things, but developer doesn't have resources to pull it off. Why keeping this Elite type of sim flying in there? It's quite clear that most of X series has nothing much to do with it.

About good looks - that was written 4 months ago, which is lot of time for game development. During this time we have seen video, we have seen planets, we have seen coming everything together. This gave me belief that ED will look much better *as whole package* in the end.

What's your opinion of cockpit you see in battle ship video?

They look rather weak tbh both graphically and in implementation. Weakest part of the game as far as I have seen it.

I don't complain about the cockpit because I know FD is not going to change their minds about it, but I still don't like it. I'd rather there was a way to switch it off and have a HUD only like in Evochron: Mercenary.

I was never a fan of 3D cockpits, and X:R has not made me a convert in that matter.

Kind of an ironic thing to say to the person who is openly admitting to having enjoyed the scenery in spite of the others, isn't it? :p But that wasn't at all what I was talking about  I don't care about the minigame. The thing that many anti-highway people fail to understand is the importance of the structure of space. Unstructured space is boring. Because it's unstructured.

Consider, for example, a station that is near the entrance to a highway, vs. a station that is far away from any entrance. These two stations are vastly different in how they are perceived by a pilot, how they operate, and so forth. Take out all structure to travel and you also rip out all the extra meaning granted by this structure.

On a different note, I have to agree that there were an immense number of bad design decisions related to the player ship. The one-ship concept bled into too many areas of the design and...it definitely hurt the game. Still, I can live with it :)

So, the best solution to structure a travel is high way? Is this most best ever immersive idea they could come up with?

Jumpgates are fine. FSD a-la EVE intra system travel is fine too. Highways should have been third choice. A not they way it's done currently: fake-busy-out-of-nowhere-going-any-where-with-mini-game-for-no-reason.

Real space is unstructured, immensely vast and has no "entrances".

Some of us actually like space.

I was navigating my way to Steam today. And seen this.

X Rebirth http://store.steampowered.com/app/2870/

I have got to say, their video's look impressive. Not to the detail that Elite is, but looks fairly detailed. Making me yearn for breaking out my warthog from it's drawer and drop the $50 for it. Anyone else have thoughts on this because it is here now, and playable...

I bought this off Steam and am enjoying it. (Much) easier to play than previous 'X' games. All actions in the game seem to be useable with the X box controller, except for 'jumping' in stations - I need to press the space bar on the keyboard. Of course there's only one ship you directly control with your co-pilot. I'm not sure how large the 'sandbox universe' is; It's far smaller than ED. Solar systems are called Sectors. Sectors are broken up into numerous Zones. The graphics are stunning and detailed. I'm sure ED's interface will be easier to control. But even with nested menu's on the X box controller, its not awkward for me. Of course its only single player. There's one main Campaign and/or free play. This is a good game for me until Elite Dangerous. Also any confusions in the Campaign are immediately cleared by running the "You Tube" part 1, part 2, part 3, videos. If you do this, know that any 'part' you run could be a game breaker.
