best ship for a newbie?

I'm working with an account with $50 million... I'm trying to learn the game, I see initially that I'm going to be mostly trading.
Whats a good ship for me to work with? not concerned with spending money, just don't want to waste time getting blasted by pirates while trading/exploring.
Orca looks great, but I have a feeling after I outfit it I'm not going to have anything left.

Start in a Hauler.

Very good range, nimble and of course, cheap as chips.

Once you have found a good trade route consider moving up to something bigger

With that kind of money you can equip a Hauler for trading or exploring and a Viper for bounty hunting and kill missions - or try various setups in a Cobra (the best all-arounder) and still be left with a ton of money to buy a big ship when you know exactly what you want.

Go with a type 6, can outfit it to carry capacity of 100, get best shields and Engine can and anything else think want. Don't waste money or effort with weapons. Set engines to 4 pips and shields to 2. Any time Interdicted, submit by dropping speed to 0, soon as out of warp hit engines full speed aim at planet/station you was headed to and keep boosting til you can re-engage warp.

As a newbie though fly the sidewinder a bit to get used to the mechanics. Flying, docking and running from trouble. Once comfortable then start spending your credits.

Oops your right, changed it to type 6 costs more but you got the bucks :)

I would recommend smashing a few vipers to pieces first, or at maximum a Cobra. You're most likely going to wreck a few ships while at it and if you blow out most of the money on your ship, you might end up in a starter sidewinder faster than you can say "What the heck does that loitering warning mean?". So learn the game in under 5M ship first, then worry about what suits you best. Not sure if 50M is best way to start with, kind of takes away the feeling of slowly building your fortune, but everyone to their tastes.

Really good advise, yeah it is a Type 6 :D

whats the best place to buy a ship?

I'm generally familiar with the basics of flying-- I've explored for a few hours, played the sims, so feel comfortable with the basics.
I'm inclined to get a decently mobile ship, build shields and frame shift to the max, and play around with that for a awhile.

I know, starting with $50m doesn't exactly build suspense of the game.. but I actually enjoy it, just don't have hours to spend on it (had the same issue with MechWarrior online))

Dont go crazy spending, it can go alot faster then you think. Make double sure you have enough credits in the bank for insurance costs ( I always kept at least 3 times in the bank) cause in beginning you will lose a few ships.

Get comfortable in a sidewinder before moving up to hauler then up to type-6 for trading. When moving up and if gonna sell your old ship (keep your freebie sidewinder) make sure you sell off ALL the modules first, then sell the shell.

As a newbie why would you start with 50m account?

I'd rather start from scratch in a Sidey because it's important (IMO) to learn as you go and grow...but yeah..

a newbe with 50 mill

who's account did you buy?

:D
i dont care.
Buy an asp and kit it out as you like
just inmagine you dont have any more money or delete it all together
actually i feel sorry for you ..what is there to gain?

where's the best place to buy a ship? I assume not all stations have all ships/equipment?

also, is there any downside to dropping all my credits in a bank (and how do you do it anyway?)

it's also a feeling of success when you have gone from a free sidey and not having anything > hauler > Fully kitted out viper and a type-6 and a fairly decent balance in the bank without being killed once :D starting off with loads off money just defeats the whole purpose of playing "games" / "sims" but that's just my opinion.

Newb with 50m. Don't think so. Got to love the Trolls....

not. how on earth am I a troll?
more than happy to post a screen shot.

Don't start with 50mil work your way up learning as you go with something dirt cheap.

The more you spend the more you'll lose when experienced pilots jump you.

Start with the small ships - Sidewinder, Hauler, Eagle - to get a feel for the game. You will smash a few hulls when you're starting out and it's better not to use up your fortune to do so.

Get in the habit of checknig your balance against the insurance excess (on the left-hand-side of the right panel) every time you take off. It's an essential habit to get into; if you don't then you can lose everything very, very easily.

As a very approximate rule of thumb, you can expect to spend the cost of a new ship over again for fitting out, buying cargo and keeping the insurance excess in the bank.

The sidey is the best learner ship out there.
Go learn!

Although I would personally start with 1000cr as you are only reducing your play time with that much money in your account.
