Descent: Underground

I was going to back but....

So the release date is 1 year from now, so the final price of the game is $50 for a year (plus a few months) of development. That is asking a lot, for not much work or content. Then its only a multiplayer game, so it is limited on content, and as a nitch title will have problems with population size. Then there is the fact that purchasing the game does not unlock everything, you have to pay more or play to unlock different ships, so its a B2P game with a F2P model. Then you add in that one of their tier rewards is 1 year (or 5) worth of maps and ships, meaning that they are already looking at DLC of ships and maps (sure it was a given but still at the price they are asking it just seems off).

Best of luck too them, will look into it again when it launches.

Still prefer Sol Contingency. Sorry, Wingman&Team.

I was about to respond with the same. Descent: Underground doesn't look or feel like a Descent game. Yes, i realize they haven't had a chance to really work on the movement or combat yet, but the areas don't give off that claustrophobic and directionless vibe, the ships look like submarines rather than a proper Pyro (even if this is a sort of "prequel"), and all those additional gameplay features (tech trees? tunnelling???) make it look more like Miner Wars. (And Miner Wars was no Descent.) I somehow doubt they'll even have any advanced movement, like chording. (It won't appeal to the new target audience.)

Sol Contingency, meanwhile, looks fantastic, seems to play like its Descent lineage (more like D1/2 than D3, from what I hear), and . . . was taken down by a Cease and Desist from Interplay because interplay preferred to give the license to Descent: Underground. (Probably because big names + successful Kickstarter = better exposure)
Fortunately, the Sol Contingency will just remove the infringing art/sound content and release the game anyway, but it's still kind of annoying.

Ok ya Sol Contingency looks very cool. So looked it up and from the Dev

Fellow Descent and 6DoF fans,

with Interplay's announcement of the next officially sanctioned Descent game, which was kickstarted today, some of you have asked what happens to Sol Contingency and our upcoming Proving Grounds multiplayer demo. At least one fan has shown concern that our game might be cancelled. This is *not* the case as we are moving forward as planned -- we have a game practically ready to go and missing two ingredients for success: the new ship and proper input method support (among a few other, minor things and bugfixing). We wouldn't be in our right mind if we stopped now!

From what we have seen, Interplay taking on Wingman's team to make their next Descent game may have been the reason they sent us a cease and desist letter, forcing us to drop the Descent assets and references we had when we started. That notwithstanding, our game is now an independent brand, simply "Sol Contingency", and apart from still being a go-to game for people who love the feel and core gameplay of Descent (because we are not gonna give that up), it can be another exciting item in the lineup of reemerging space sim and action games, right next to Descent: Underground and others.

So stay tuned and keep supporting us if you wish. We'll make it worth your while and worth the wait.

Attached is the first shot of our game's heads-up display as built for Proving Grounds. No cockpit in the demo, but the HUD will hopefully please your eyes nonetheless!

Yeah, I know that they're not dead or anything, just pulling the Descent-related assets. I actually think it will be better in the long run, as it allows them the freedom to do whatever they want with the game, rather than being tied to the risks of a known IP. It also allows them to get proper funding, so in the end the game will likely be better for it.

And if worst comes to worst, we'll always have DXX-Rebirth, and really, that's all you need to play proper Descent.

I will probably end up backing them soon here. It looks pretty decent so far and its relatively cheap to back. They have a much smaller scope and a lot of potential to concentrate on the core mechanic.

A good number of the hardcore'est hardcore Descent players (like Lotharbot, Drakona, etc) are really throwing their weight into supporting DU. I suspect they'll do a lot to keep the devs on track for making a proper Descent game.
But I'm still not convinced.

Descent Kickstarter enters last 12 hours

Apologies for the cross-post, but I suspect most people are in this forum and time is running short.

I know a lot of folks here are old time gamers like myself and you funded E: D in the same wave of nostalgia I felt when I saw it again.

There are plans to revamp Descent as a new title supporting:

- Linux OS
- Mac OS
- Windows OS
- Oculous Rift

It will run on Unreal Engine 4 and have:

- Destructible terrain
- Single player
- Multi-player
- Coop
- Six degrees of freedom
- Customization of ships and more.

Plus, they have just buffed all of the kickstarter packages as of yesterday so you now get more if you support them. Plus, giveaway copies have been added on many support levels for your friends to play with you.

There are less than 12 hours to go and they are almost at their goal.

Even if you are not interested in supporting yourself, please spread the word so others can make the choice.

Cheers.

I'm a massive Descent fanboï, yet I didn't backed this one as - to me - it doesn't seem to nail the Descent vibe that well. I'm more looking forward to Sublevel Zero

The new trailer came out 2 days ago.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K06s2Yvf91E

It's a shame they didn't launch the kickstarter with that. Looks a lot more exciting.

I think it is a good time to remake Descent because of the new features available in the Unreal Engine. In particular the ability to have massive maps (64 BIT), visual/particle fx, support for VR, etc. I hope they succeed. The Descent series was really great back in the 90s. The final installment - Freespace 2 - was one of the best, most under rated, space games of all time in my honest opinion.
