Should there be identifiable markings for players who have NOT spent RL $ on the game

Hi all,

My first posted thread... :D

I wanted to propose an idea to ED Devs - here's the background.

I have been playing NWN online for about for a good few months and figured out how to make in game currency really quick. With the accumulated currency I have been able to make even more currency through buying selling on auction house etc...I have then bought end game gear.

Now here's the problem with that...anyone who is a little serious or slightly bitter or militant in their views to Pay-2-Win games will cast accusations (endlessly) that you have purchased your gear with RL cash - even if you have not - it gets sickening after awhile and destroys your own enjoyment of the game - if you win an encounter with another player - then you end up getting whisphers that you paid to win with your "mommies" credit card or something like that.

Anyways, it just really can get to you, if you haven't and they cannot accept it and there is no way to prove it.

PROPOSAL: There should be some clear marking or identifiable way that another player can tell that a player has not received items from other players (other than NPCs) or has paid to have ingame currency or items.

This way you can prove unequivocally that you are 100% legit in your gear and accumulated wealth.

Interested to hear other people's opinions and alternatives to provide solution to the problem stated...

The simple answer is that ED isn't pay to win. While FD have mooted the idea of being able to buy in game credits, there are other prerequisites that limit the amount of advancement you can achieve by throwing money at the game. You're going to need to develop your avatar (in terms of reputations and ranks) to be able to use/purchase advanced equipment, just having a lot of money isn't going to enable easy mode.

I'm really hoping...

The game develepers keep that "this is a game I want to play" hat firmly on. As said before it's been mooted they have systems in place to limit the effect of wallet over gameplay. The other hope is the knowlege that humans are going to be looking over the game. Any advantage that begins to seriously sway gameplay should be able to be spotted and levelled out.

Frontier, don't let me down.

No need. I don't see ED becoming a P2Win game (I hope). And ED is not a classic MMO, so many of the issues and conventions do not apply here (fortunately for the most part).

yikes , so not entirly mooted then as in wallet = custom paint job on ship + T-shirt/mug etc

Voted no.

If you mark your clients with a brand to indicate the fact that they used real money to give themselves a boost you will force those that care about such things to turn instead to the grey markets. (Gold Farmers) There can be quite a lot of snobbery online to which this would simply fuel the fire.

ETA:
Whilst I am unlikely to do this myself (as I don't agree with credits for cash) at the same time I would prefer people use FD's services rather than feel dirtied and turn elsewhere.

Now - vanity items - god yes .. I want people to know by <insert effect here*>

*Different coloured laser beams; skins; decals; fluffy dice; avatar effects; etc

Also to add - If someone is sending you private messages that is affecting your gameplay so that you're not enjoying it that's a form of griefing. Report them, then ignore them & move on. No need to be concerned with them anymore :)

Agree with all the points from the no voters.
But also, the less stuff that reminds me I'm playing a game the better....

It's a sandbox, you can't win anyway..

It's a no from me. ED is going to have an immersive dynamic behind it and real world intrusions are going to blunt this. It's irrelevant how a player acquired equipment.
I still hope that Founder status isn't going to be displayed (except to another Founder if acceptable to both players). I think such indicators would spoil the immersion a little and single a player out for nothing more than a nasty contempt that borders on the envious.
I want players to be targeted for game grounded reasons. I know that not everyone is a RPer but I'd like to think this game is taking steps to maintain the illusion of 'being there' for all player types.
You'll be asking for dates of birth next! ;)

This isn't a competitive "I've got the biggest weiner" game. If people talk like that over the chat in Elite they should be penalised by the mods.

Does that matter? To put it another way: is this proposal for the benefit of those that haven't or for the benefit of those that have spent money?

Voted a big NO.

I couldn't care less one way or another whether someone has or has not spent RL money to purchase anything in the game. If someone wants to buy their way through the game - then that's easy money for FD IMO and a better game for the rest of us.

Anyway I have already won the biggest weiner competition so no point in going on about it ;)
(a weiner is another name for an overdraft isnt it?)

Proposal was for those that don't want to be pinned for something they haven't done...i.e. those that didn't pay for advantage.

But reading the above, I don't like any kind of discrimination in this area - just detracts from the game itself.
