You all must get very depressed when you see someone with a better car than yours on the road, they are of course winning at life and you aren't...

All they have bought is not having to grind for many hours to get the purchase price of a ship, so would say they need to break out their credit card again if they lose it.

Does no harm to the game or other players and will help fund FD so where is the harm?

No pay-to-win in Elite. This would cause people to flee the game and any short-term profit FDev would make would be lost many times over in long-term losses.

It is not Pay to Win............I play in SOLO......!!!!!!! It is Pay To Avoid Grind!!!!!..............I'm still on my original save file too, never gone back to the Loanwinder.....so happy to take my chances.............

Just wait till they eventually allow players to transfer game credits to each other, then you will be able to pay a nice Chinese chap about £20 for 100 million credits.

Since you can not buy a skill to fly and fight for real money, why not?!

I lot of people really do not have time (work 8h+family) and/or do not want to trade grind countless hours...

Money from ships (and also selling CR (I am OK with this, too)) will accelerate game development, too.

It works for SC big time! (they got my £25) they've made tens of millions selling virtual ships so why not (my cynical side would say that's why ED ships have become so expensive ;)), the two new ships are well enough balanced that they're not game killers and that pilot skill counts for a lot in this game, it's not like someone in a Vulture or FDL is going to win every encounter,

FD have stated categorically that they would not allow the purchase of advantageous items for cash. I hope they stick with this as while I sympaphise, the game is in the journey and while you may not abuse the option, others will. Currently it's a very boring and grindy journey but hopefully that will improve.

However I can't see how later expansions won't change things and give advantages for the players that have the expansions compared to those that don't.

You are not paying for an advantage. No ship is better then any other out of the gate. You still have to pay for fittings. Now if they allow you to buy cash for money thats different.

Also remember everyone who bought the beta or the pre order gets a free eagle also so does this mean they paid for an advatnage?

I will be honest with you commanders - as much as I`m opposed pay-to-win methods, I honestly would buy many ships from FD if they ever decided to sell them for real money. I know I would.

You realise FD can't actually spend the credits they charge you for ship, right? The price of ships makes no difference whatsoever to FD. They don't even get anything directly out of making people grind for months for them (since there is no subscription). I've seen this conspiracy theory a couple of times lately but it makes no sense at all.

This mirrors my opinion fairly well.

With the free ships and lower rebuy costs: BETA BACKERS ARE PAY TO WIN! ;)

Yes to purchasing. I am in the same boat with work and a 2-year-old. I have roughly 3 hours a night to myself before I get so tired/loopy I could mess up getting an eagle through the docking bay. I've traded (completely legit and voluntary wipe at launch) my way up to an ASP with 116 cargo slots but at the snail pace that I'm inching my way toward a type 7 my daughter will be in high school before I can afford a Fer-de-Lance. I have Plenty of experience flying and believe me, I will not be on any board complaining that I wrecked my purchased ship, so that argument is moot.

I'm sensing that the likely root cause of people saying No to purchasing ships through the store is some kind of superiority or "deity" complex. They are the neckbeards that can only be defeated by the sword of 1000 truths. Due the fact that they have so much time on their hands, they are also the most prolific with their forum rage and frighten developers into submission. They can post to dozens of review sites with multiple accounts to damage any game if their beloved mechanic is tampered with. It's all about ego and bragging to their two friends that they did it the "right (tedious) way".

Easiest way to avoid grinding is by not grinding

There isn't any magic new content for bigger ships, except a new cockpit and rubbish maneuverability

The problem lies in the implicit assumption and definite possibility that the price of purchasable in-game items is not only determined by game mechanics and balance, but also by how much more money can be earned if the price goes up at the cost of enjoyment of the in-game path towards that same price. Therefore, it would have a - dare I say: negative - effect on both the finances of people who would choose that option as well as on the game itself for those who don't.
If this system were in place right now, people would very likely suspect that the pricing of the FDL is due to this very discrepancy and not address the issue in terms of the game's mechanics alone.
Thus, the current debate about the differing profitabilities of the available carreers might not take place and the underlying issues might not be addressed, leaving the game in a worse state that it could be.
