General / Off-Topic Doctor Who: 50th Anniversary

Oh Yeah !! 3D Doctor Who ...

I won't be watching in any spectacular fashion. Just me, on my own so as to have no-one to talk over it, and a bowl of popcorn. Might watch it in 3D at home. Anyone know if there's a seperate showing for 3D, or if I just press the 3D button on the remote?

From the BBC site

The Day of the Doctor will air on BBC One on 23 November and will be repeated on BBC Three on 24 November. As we’ve already announced, it will also be available in 3D to those with a 3D TV. So if you’d like to see the Doctor in a new dimension in the comfort of your own home, there are two ways you can watch the adventure in 3D.

You can either watch the episode in 3D via broadcast on your 3D TV or catch up on BBC iPlayer (more about that below). To avoid any disappointment, you might want to have a practice - you can use the 3D test card which will be on BBC Red Button HD before the first showing of Doctor Who in 3D. Please try out your viewing options in advance!

How to watch in 3D (Live broadcast)

To watch The Day of the Doctor in 3D on your TV, you will need: a 3D capable TV, 3D glasses and your telly must be able to receive the BBC’s Red Button HD stream. If you’re not sure whether your TV is capable of displaying 3D, then please check your TV’s manual. When the episode is about to start, just switch to BBC Red Button HD, put your 3D TV into ‘Side-by-Side’ mode and enjoy! For viewers with Freeview, YouView, Virgin Media and Freesat, the numbers for BBC Red Button HD are listed below:

So, An Adventure in Space and Time, Mark Gatiss' drama documentary about the origins of Doctor Who, is starting in about 10 minutes (at least, it is here. Not sure about the rest of the world). I'd love to know how many others are watching it, and some of your opinions of it once it's finished.

I for one can't recognise Brian Cox as Sydney Newman, by appearance or voice, yet apparently it's him. For all I know, they could be lying! I see no resemblance at all. Must be a really good makeup artist and vocal coach at his disposal!

I'm surprised there's not more of a response on here to An Adventure in Space and Time. Still, I found it an incredibly well made drama. Bradley played Hartnell so well. I rarely find myself connecting with characters like I did for this programme. Quite moving and emotional in many ways.

It struck me as a work of art, and I loved every moment. A big round of applause to Mark Gatiss for creating it. Bravo indeed, good Sir!

Hee hee. He once got a phone call from the Olympics asking if he could appear at the opening ceremony to talk about the wonders of the universe. He had to explain that they'd gotten the wrong Brian Cox.

He's a fantastic actor. I like when he buttered up William Hartnell followed by the sinister way he replied to Verity Lambert.

The dramatisation was a nostalgiafest for me. I used to have that Dr Who annual. I wonder what happened to it.

Just finished watching it on the iPlayer. Loved it.

Tom Baker was still the best Doctor though, duh, obviously...

Hartnell was played superbly, although I don't think anyone was duff. Cox was great, too.

Perhaps they should let Gatiss loose on the actual Dr Who series.

I watched it this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. License fee well spent on that, now if we could only get rid of all the reality rubbish and have more programmes like that!

While I really like Matt Smith, I love Patrick Troughton's stuff. Quite an under rated performance. I loved Tom Baker at the time, but having re-watched some of his recently, not so much.

Question: Is the one tonight, the one with all the doctors? Even a William Hartnell & Patrick Troughton & Jon Pertwee look-a-likes? Or is it just Matt Smith, David Tenant & John Hurt?

If it isn't all the Doctors, what happened to that?

Alien, I think the TV special has only ever been Smith + Tennant, although I'm holding out for an Ecclestone-shaped surprise. ( I think I'll be disappointed )

Big Finish did an audio Doctor Who 50th Anniversary story with the first 8 Doctors. Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee appear as impressions for a minor part of the story, but they did a good job.

I did think "An Adventure in Time and Space" was excellent. It goes to show that Gatiss is actually an excellent writer. I really can't account for the reason why his Doctor Who episodes to date end up so meh. "Nebulous", "The Devil in Amber" and "Black Butterfly" were great.

Dunno about you guys...
