Your predictions for Elite V (FIVE!)

Just a fun little exercise while we wait. Assuming that the next next iteration of Elite will follow a similar timeline and be out 10-20 years after ED, what kind of game do you think it will be? What kind of technology will it make use of? Photorealism? What comes after the Occulus Rift? Contact lenses? Plugging your brain directly into the game?

i predict that elite 4 will be such a success and so long lived they will have to start new servings (with the code at start) to accomidate the 7 billion players who never need/want another game :p

Ha Elite V. Well, they'd have to wait for us all on the forums to slowly give up hope and say, 'it's never coming out,' only to be fooled at the last minute :)

Seriously though I can see this being the base game with a steady flow of updates rather than a new 'V' attached. A bit like World of Tanks which is on something like version 8 now.

I think Elite V will require you purchasing a Cobra Mk III and pack up 100 credits then blasting off from your back garden.

If it takes as long as this one then half of us will be dead by then... not to be, you know, all negative and stuff.

I'm personally expecting Elite IV to last a good 10 years or so. WoW and Eve are around that age and show no sign of stopping. I think the general idea with online games is to think 5+ years, and I'd be surprised if Frontier aren't taking that into consideration with the architecture they're putting in place.

So in 10-15 years we may see Elite: Deadly, by which stage VR is more commonplace, but gaming also becomes much more portable and everything can be accessed from anywhere. I would expect an always-on mode to be available - take care of economic decisions whilst out and about, and pilot your ship in a more immersive experience whilst at home. The way we game in general might be so different that the game will need more extensive use of in-game autopilots to do things during downtime.

Other VR options will include room-based projection systems and smarter TVs that can use optical tricks to make your whole living room feel part of the universe. No need for goggles that way. This is where I see consoles going in future, as currently they're just niche PCs - they need to have a better edge in future to survive.

It's hard to imagine the gameplay itself being much different. The only way it could expand from what they're shooting for now (which isn't much different from FFE) would be to have dimensions to alternate universes with different physics and other interesting effects. I can't imagine it wanting to go down that route though, and at the same time I can't imagine a rehash of the current theme being all that compelling for new players.

10 years from now you will see ppl that look like Borg wandering the streets playing elite on there portable VR suits.:D

It would be funny to see us "more mature" elite fans doddering about in our original (Mk1 Elite IV) ships while all the bright young kids are wizzing around in their Fer-de-Lance Mk XXs and goodness knows what else. We could say, "I remember when all this was a pirate infested wasteland y'know!!" :D

No officer, I wasn't jumping out in front of that car.

You see Geraldine had my port flank covered but then Jabokai hit me with a salvo on my starboard sans shields, which knocked out my stabilisers and...

Well, as time unfolds, devices like the Oculus are going to jump on leaps and bounds as the they incorporate full spatial detection and get up to 4k Ultra HD. Now add to this devices like the Emotiv Epoc. Which is infact available for $299 via the http://www.emotiv.com/store/ site. How about for avatar controlling, moving your arms and legs about, controlling your hands over those dashboard controls within the ship with a mind control device. I'm sure we can all agree, it would take our virtual experience to a complete new level. The fact of the matter is, these technologies are not only already here with us, they are going to be hitting us on so many levels, and that includes the gaming world.

Imagine sitting in your cockpit with your high-end VR Oculus on and your Emotiv Epoc headset? Did I say, Emotiv Epoc? Oh yes, that was first Gen, they are in 2nd Gen now and have the Emotiv Insight on the lines to be out in 2014.

One day, even with the current build of ED, you'll be able to don your Oculus put on your Emotive headset and step into your avatar and get into that ship of yours. Then go pilot the galaxy whilst interacting with your avatar in a virtual physical way via brain movement inputs. Takes the whole immersion thing to a whole new level and guess what folks ... it's coming.
