Newcomer / Intro Well I am about to uninstall the game - somebody stop me

Ok I calmed down a bit and went back. I didn't know that there were democracy/high pop locations with low sec. I never saw it on the system map at all. Might be an idea to highlight it in a different colour - green for high, red for low etc. I'm afraid I thought it was like the original Elite. I found a High security system with one industrial and one agricultural port and I'm now trading between them. Got myself back up to 70K and haven't been interdicted (yet).

I'm staying away from all non high sec in this crate that's for sure. Is good for a doorstop I guess.
while most NPC's follow some sensible logic, like pirates only attacking if they find you're carrying cargo, there are the odd rare psycho NPC's that are just out for blood. these are not the norm but they do exist.

you can only be interdicted if the hostile is behind you. so when you enter a system fly off at an odd angle so your radar will be clear of any normal traffic as you approach your destination. NPC's will travel straight from the star to the station, if you are off that beaten path then the only ship flying round behind you will be a hostile one. if you have plenty of fuel you could turn round to fly at them giving you more time to work with and then select a new system and bug out. that will reset the old system so when you return the killer NPC wont be there. sure another might spawn but as you've found in high sec systems, being interdicted is rare.

This can be highlighted ... in the Galaxy map, open the View tab and then select "Government" in the Show by Colour drop-down.

If you're looking for a particular type of system then select the appropriate drop-down, zoom out if necessary, then toggle the corresponding check box a few times. Any matching systems will flash on and off -- much easier to spot.

edit: I see you were talking about something a bit different, hopefully the above might still be somewhat useful :)

How did you get past day 1 money troubles? By the time I buy fuel I barely make anything (and I had a 400 fine for not being able to leave an indoors dock right away, it was hilarious). I bought a little of a high supply resource and was on my way to sell it and got interdicted and killed. Another time I had a little discovery data I was going to sell and I ran out of fuel in a station-less system. After about 8 hours of playing today, I'm only at 1,700 credits. This is brutal.

And with that 1700 you can buy more expensive cargo which nets a bigger profit. It will increase from there. Those early days it does feel like you will never earn much but the more you have the more you make.

Just lost around 7 hours worth of exploration gameplay due to an interdiction. I am being interdicted every single time I fly to a station now. This is on solo. Seriously I cant avoid the interdictions no matter what I try and how I fly and I just get carved into pieces every time.

I cant fight anything in a Hauler. How am I expected to get ANYWHERE in this game when I get interdicted and die every single time I jump into a sector? I'm at the end of my tether with it. What the hell can I do to play somewhere where its at least reasonably safe?

I was within 1 bar of safety - got interdicted, mass locked so I couldn't jump. My supposedly uprated shields were shredded in seconds and I tried to boost out but the guy even caught up to me when I was boosted. No escape - no chance of survival whatsoever. Honestly? This is just NOT FUN. I wouldn't mind but I wasn't even carrying any cargo either.

This is only my third day of playing. Come on guys - at least give me a chance to escape...

I also nearly broke my hand punching the wall. This isn't what the game is about.

The Hauler sucks and I still wonder what purpose does it have in the game besides being a duck target given the way it is. Play again and stick with the Sidewinder until you can buy an Adder. Pay close attention to the news and/or establish a faction you agree with and do missions for them. That's what I did until I could buy an Adder.

Despite its' looks, the Adder has been growing on me and I've kept it despite having the money to update to a Cobra. It's a very capable ship and rather enjoyable when upgraded. It's also not much of a threat to many and I've even had other players let me go because of it (and some sweet talking I might add) ;-).

I'll get a Cobra when I can start over with the Mac release of the game but again, the Adder is an enjoyable ship.

P.S. If you do get an Adder, don't settle for nothing less than a turret in the Class 2 hard point. You'll thank me later.

Check the System Security Level! It's in the System Map - move the "cursor" off the main star, onto a blank area.

Avoid LOW security systems like the plague. Consider avoiding MEDIUM security systems.

Also check the Government Type. Avoid populated Anarchy systems.

And don't punch walls. It's a pixel spaceship game. ;)

Ah, missed this. You found it.

Here are some ideas on this to chew over...

FD, please bring "SECURITY LEVEL" Front And Centre as we navigate the Elite Galaxy

You have to move the target cursor off any planet, then the left hand panel will change and show more information.

On the topic of the Hauler: I like it. Was my second ship, and got me up to a cobra easily. Its not strong since it only has one hardpoint, but that's enough to kill most attackers (NPCs) if you know what you're doing. And it has a great jump range. Used this for a "test" exploration tour, and was quite successful.

Still, looking back I would probably try to get an Adder, since its a better allround ship.

Tip of the day: Hyperdrive charges much faster than FSD and isn't subjected to mass locking, so - like someone already suggested - just submit to the interdiction, all pips to shields and then quickly select another system while the your drive is cooling down, boost & jump away.

Also: watch your 6 while supercruising.

Secondly I would say skip the hauler entirely.

Why? It is a great little exploring ship. I do it in a hauler without any problems, especially if one checks the security type of the system when they're heading back to give in the data. He's not trading, but exploring.

What is fun ? A game without risk and without any loss ? You play, you lose, just try again, or play anything else...
You have just lost 3days, Haven't you like these 3 gaming days ? If yes, just play again, if not, uninstall !

Hi,
I had a hauler,
1. when interdicted try to make a run for it.
2. if cannot run, then let the interdiction happen.
3. put all the power to engine and boost constantly and move quickly away from the attacker.
4. once you get away far enough then hyperspace and jump.

Note :-- Please make sure you power plant have a max load out.

Since hauler cannot win and will not win the fight so you just have make flight and a quick hop out of the battle zone.
I have not lost any hauler since then.
Top dog is to get a cobra arm to the teeth and loaded for war even in the conflict zone and also trading.
I since switch to the Viper and had kill an anaconda.

How do you do that, actually? I have yet to find any information about a system's security level on the system map. Am I overlooking something or is this information hidden somewhere?

It's shown in the galaxy map view when you select the system ..... however not all systems actually show any security level ....
it seems to be around the main populated areas.

Did I say hello to you the other night, in Empire space near Achenar, Simon?

You can find out the security level of any system in the system screen rather than the galmap. It should be shown on the galmap, but it isn't consistently. To find out,, you need to scroll the focus away from any stellar body or station. It then shows the system security level in the left-hand pane.

Aww, the hauler getting some hate. I used the hauler as my first trading ship and didn't have any trouble with it. Granted, I didn't have it long before I jumped into the Cobra but it fulfilled it's roll well for what I used it for and it didn't explode once.....it almost did, but that's not the point. :D

I'm not sure I can afford to trade the 16 cargo racks in my hauler - does the Adder have the same capability? Also to the guy making no credits - I got off the mark doing scrap metal bulletin board runs for about 3k each. The hold in the sidewinder is just big enough for most of them.

Good tip on jumping out of system. Only prob there is it takes me so long to open the map, choose a system and jump to it that by then I am already dead. I have class D shields I think plus a shield booster but I get carved up within seconds unless the guy is using a pea shooter.

Drop the booster and use the difference to upgrade the shields. D = rubbish (for shields). I appreciate the advice is often to D-rate stuff first (it's the lightest component and gives you the greatest jump range), but it's not really worth it with shields.

Anyway, add me like I said - if you don't want me to drop some palladium (I've been offered before and declined), I can at least run escort for you pro bono and help you make a profit. You actually lose nothing from joining a wing as a trader - the lore explanation is that the galactic authorities provide the trade bond to encourage actions against piracy. It would require you to play in open for that period though.

If you've determined that you only want to play solo, tell us what system you're in so we can check out the neighbourhood and let you know where you can make a trade without the muggers and lunatics harrassing you every step of the way.

no no, dont use the galaxy map. open the left hand UI, then if you are near the top of the list (eg your station is near the top) scroll up to quickly get to the systems. select one you can get to and off you go! if you are near the middle (eg your station is way down the list) then just scroll down till you get to the systems.

It's just an objectively pointless ship!

The Adder has three hardpoints - one of them medium - and can haul 20-odd tons without sacrificing the shield. It's not that much more expensive than the Hauler either.

Greyhawk - get an Adder and put a turreted multicannon on the class 2 hardpoint (when you have 1.3mcr! lol). Then laugh at the ships that try to interdict you.

Haha....you a salesman?

Ok point taken! Its just hard to figure out exactly whats possible with a ship going on the info given considering I have no manual (digital download).
