vulture: fixed or gimballed?

I'm close to getting a vulture and was looking at what people had for loadouts. With its high maneuverability I thought it was a no brainer to do two fixed guns, but it seems lots of people are going gimballed. I'm wondering why that is and what you would suggest for bounty hunting.

It all depends on YOUR flying skills. Some of us just admit we're not that good and rely on gimballs to compensate for our lack of AAC skills.

i went with gimballed pulse, though i've done most of my fighting in CZs, not bounty hunting, since i've had it. don't think i'd change it anyway. i use gimballed for targeting sub-systems on the big boys. when i ran a viper, it was fixed lasers for shields and gimballed multis for hull/sub-systems. since the vulture on has the two hardpoints, i opted for the gimballed weapons. chaff is only slightly annoying and gives the capacitor(?) time to charge up again anyway.

Personally, I don't feel that the hardpoint placement is 100% conducive to fixed weapons, they're a touch too far apart. Due to that there's a "blindspot" from about 1km to around 200m where you struggle to get both weapons to bear at the same time, so it can really affect your DPS.

I've tried both 2xFixed, 1 Fixed beam/1 gim pulse, and 2 gim pulses. And its quicker to knock out NPCs (targetting their power plants) with 2 gim pulses.

If you playing against players then fixed is better.

I don't think it's down to skill so much m8, maybe in terms of someones ability to stay on target, but not overall. I run fixed beams on my Viper, Cobra and two on my FDL... because they have a few hardpoints that work beautifully with fixed weapons. Nice tight hardpoint spacing, that allows you to get both weapons on target 100% of the time.

I agree, fixed on Viper is very good. Not got to the FDL yet!

Depends on your loadout. If you are using dual thermal or dual kinetic then you can get away with fixed if your flying skills are decent, although against smaller targets (Sidewinder/Eagle size) you'll find that you're often missing with one of the two due to convergence.

If you're flying mixed thermal and kinetic then at least one of them will need to be gimballed.

The nice thing with modules having 100% sell value is you can try them out pretty easily and find something that fits your style.

Gimballed. MAkes for much easier subsystem targetting.
As someon eelse commented the vulture has a huge dead-spot up close with fixed weapons.

Ah, so that is what it's all about! You make a thread about the Vulture to bring up the Clipper discussion. Fooled us all ;)

You don't use them on a Clipper because Empire pilots are supposed to have style.

I prefer 2 fixed beam lasers (C3). Tried 2 gimbaled beam lasers, and that takes down NPCs a tiny bit quicker - especially the smallest ships
Though with the gimablled you have to watch out for heat issues. With 2 fixed beams the problem does not arise.

Subsystem targetting is only an issue on the larger craft (mostly only Anacondas...anything else will blow just as fast if you just hammer it directly). And on the Anaconda it's not terribly hard keeping your fixed lasers on the spot.

In the end I went back to the fixed beams because it's more fun, as you tend to do a lot more "work" with thrusters. And jockeying around for position in a dogfight is what it's all about for me.

Haha that thought didn't actually come up till after reading the posts, but your comment made me chuckle a bit, Thx!

I'm a big fan of FIXED beam lasers but had to switch to GIMBALED as the hard points are too far away when aiming at small ships. You hardly hit the ship with 2 beams at the same time. It's a big waste of energy and fire power if you only hit with one beam.

Just installed 2 GIMBALED C3 Beam Lasers. It's a BLAST! :D

And taking out big ships is so easy I can't believe. Aim for the Power Plant with your GIMBALED lasers and an Anaconda goes down in less than a minute.

2 gimballed C3 pulse for me, heat is a non issue I can pretty much fire non stop.
subsystems falls way faster than when I use fixed because I don't have the dead angle up close.
but man dem chaffs, for PVP fixed all the way.

Just to add a little to that - if you're running RES' or "normal" NPCs, that's true - but if you're in a conflict zone then ships are armoured... they'll go down much quicker when the power plant is targetted, even the smaller ship (I go for the PP in anything bigger than a Viper when in a war torn system).

I'd probably consider fixed in a RES, and definitely gimballed in a conflict zone, pulses or bursts being my choice for extended firing times.

2 gimbled burst hear they mow anything down but use alot of power. many will swear by fixed and for large targets they are fine but when it comes to sub systems etc gimbled always have the advantage.

Nose hardpoints = Fixed

Wing hardpoints = Gimbaled (can be fixed, but fighting at close range will get you some misses)

Since vulture hardpoints are way closer to the "center" of the ship (even tough they're far away from the nose), fixed will always be better... and you save some power from avoiding gimbal too :p

The ship is the gimbal. However, you can get the best of both worlds by using gimballed weapons and then un targeting ships if they drop chaff.
