[PIC HEAVY-ISH] My Exploration

Hey, i am now using this as an explorers log, which i will post in with random intervals.
Here's a complete list of logs available with the click of a button.

Anyways, here is the original post ;

Story ;

Long ago in a galaxy, well our galaxy actually, a Lonely explorer found this nebula, in the outer rims of the galaxy ;

The Commander didn't have a sufficient jumprange to get there, however i had.
I asked for the name and he gave me it (Thread ; https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=107994)
I then set up my Anaconda for the journey...

... then i gave up after 2500LY because i was such a noob and the route planner was so bad at the time.

However ; It did not stop me from exploration, and now, weeks later i have finally done it.

My journey

My journey started at TSU, where i had already submitted 181 reports for the ongoing Alliance Exploration Programme.

From there i followed [REDACTED UNTIL I GET CONFIRMATION THAT IT IS OKAY THAT I USE HIS NAME] some 1500 LY into the outer galaxy, from there, he went off and i Decided to start my Journey to Dryuae Aip Gi-b D13-0

Here's a picture showing my journey with some inaccuracy ;

Click me :D

(Sorry for my crap paint editing, first time I've ever used it)

On my way i saw exciting things, most notably ; My first and second undiscovered Earthlike Planets!

Second one :D

After some time i got within 1000LY of the nebula, but due to the lack of stars, it took me half an hour longer than usual to get to it.

When i got to the Nebula, i was stunned, it looked amazing, like no other nebula have ever done.

Pictures ;

Well, when i opened the system map, i was somewhat dissapointed.
The system was already claimed, by none other than the Nebulas discoverer.
He made it somehow, which was great for him and even though i was not the first discoverer of the lone neutron star of the nebula, i congratulate him on being one of the only people to have claimed an ENTIRE nebula for themself. Good work man :)

So i started my trip back home, i found an Earthlike 100 LY away from the Nebula which was nice.

My plan for going home was to use neutron stars as waypoints ; I would simply plot a route to one, get there, scan it, plot a route to the next one, and it would slowly take me home.

So i was doing this, when i suddenly noticed the neutron star was very weird.
I exited the comms panel that i had opened (because social reasons)
and targeted it.

It was no neutron star..
I immidiently saw what it was... A BLACK HOLE!
And it was undiscovered!
What luck!

After what seemed like half an hour, i was done playing with the lensing effect, and moved on.

On my way home i found a Herbig Ae/Be Proto star, which i assume is very rare since all Proto stars except that one have been those annoying T-Tauri stars.

The Star in the background is a T-tauri star.

After speed running the last 2000LY, i was finally back at TSU, where i sold all my data.

Summary ;

Distance traveled ; ~ 21000 LY
Systems visited ; 760!
Profit made ; 7.939.099 CR!
Neutron Stars First Discovered ; 16
Black holes first discovered ; 1
Herbig Ae/Be stars first discovered ; 1
Terraforming candidates first discovered ; Atleast 30+
Earthlikes first discovered ; 3
T-tauri stars encountered ; Way too many.
Badlands encountered ; Way too many.
Mission time ; Around 22 hours.
Exploration fun : 8/10 - Would do again

I had much fun on this trip, and it has encouraged me to continue exploring.
My profit made me 2 million away next rankup, which i hope to make in the next couple of days.

I also recommend everyone to go to that Nebula, it may not look so good on my pictures, but i'm running it on low settings here, on high, it has to be the most beautiful place in the galaxy!
I also excuse my grammar, English isn't my native language.

Have a nice day explorers, i hope to see you out there once!

+1 my fellow explorer!

Good finds, especially on that unexplored Black Hole (I'm on a 6,000ly black hole exploration trip right now). Haven't managed to find any earth-likes though :(

Oh, the first picture is kind of small, what Nebula was it exactly?

Search on Dryuae Aip Gi-b D13-0, the nebula is to the right about 30 LY

Man that was a pain in the ass to memorize and type into the GalMap xDDD
Very cool nebula though. It's like two simultaneous explosions of blue/purple dust that overlap.
Yeah, it is very unordinary.
As far as i can tell it is procedurally generated as the Nebula has a procedurally generated name.
Could be wrong though.
Also i know that system name exactly now after this trip :p

You can copy & paste into the galaxy navigation search box ;)

Yes, it will be procedurally generated. It's a planetary nebular, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetary_nebula

There aren't many of them around. I've found a couple, the 2nd only today. Pretty cool things!

For those who would like to visit one and don't want to travel too far, the Spirograph Nebula is about 1,000 LY from Sol. Definitely worth a trip.

Very cool that they actually put that into the game, here have some rep for that post.

You can paste into the search box in the galaxy map.

Michael

Would it be possible to select all when clicking the search box? And/or add "Ctrl-A" to select all of the content of the search box? I know you can double click to select a single word or drag select but it's still awkward to paste something into the search box.

There are many improvements that could be made like better auto complete or history.

I submitted a bug for this a long while ago but I realize of course it's a low priority issue.

Mission time - 2-3 weeks
Distance - 50,000 LY
Systems scanned - 3000+
Profit - unknown, still in deep space.
When i get to TSU i think i`m gonna rank it up 1 tier :p

Likely not. It's only based on honking, not detailed scanning. Kids are just flying to 1500 systems, honking (5 sec?), and moving on. Someone, somewhere, thinks that's 'exploring'.

Micheal,

Any chance of being able to copy the current system name you're in, to the clipboard?

Reason being to be able to keep track of systems visited.

This is somewhat mitigated by using the 3rd party utility called EDDiscovery, which parses the Netlog when VerboseLogs=1 and automatically adds visited systems in to its own database.

It would be fantastic to have some of the abilities that EDDiscovery provides, in-game, though.

I'm currently having a play around with my own utility which I'm writing in Python, using the same trick of parsing the Netlog in verbose mode. While that's kind of fun, having such a log in-game (and with a facility to add notes and export the data to CVS!) would be a very good thing for explorers such as myself.

Regards

but i do detailed scans too.

...as any real explorer would.

But detailed scans mean nothing for the community goal. You can honk 1500 systems without scanning anything, or you can honk 1500 systems and do detailed scans on the bodies you find. Both are equal in the eyes of the community goal. You get nothing extra for having scanned the systems, as far as the community goal is concerned. You will get the extra money for the detailed scans, but they don't impact the community goal.

It's even more foolish when the CG was written as though the intent was to colonize a new area. If you were really going to colonize, knowing there are "some planetary bodies of some kind (honking only)" wouldn't be good enough. You would need detailed scans, but hey, that makes sense, right?

Also, a reward of the CG is a discount on the ship most likely used for exploring. So, after you go exploring, you get a discount on a ship you would use for exploring. Makes even more sense, right?

Sigh.

Auto complete would put to much stress on the server with 400 billion stars, but history is probable.

After some thinking i have decided i will use this thread as a exploration log, which i will post in with random intervals what i have done, and such.

So let's start with the first entry ;

01/04/3301

Today i started my journey in TSU, where i had been deliverying 7 million cr or 760 systems worth of data to the ongoing Alliance Exploration Programme, earlier that same day.

I started up going 500 LY from TSU in a North Eastern angle if the core is straight behind you.

I flew in an arch around the bubble of inhabited space.
After some speculation on where i would want to go now, i decided that i would help out my friend who was fairly new at exploration (still very good at it though) who was some 3000LY out.

After trying to get to him for nearly 2 hours, he finally decided to stop and scan the systems near the Blue Planetary Nebula.

2mgtaq9.jpg

We scanned about 7 systems before we decided to park our vessels and prepare for sleep. (Which i'm gonna do after i'm done with this)
Before we said bye to eachother and went off, we took this selfie in one of our explored systems ;

Summary ;

LY Traveled ; 5028
Systems visited ; 186

Goodluck on your journey.
If you're looking for fellow explorers to populate the map a bit look here
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=129539
.
Nice find that nebula. I found one similar at EOK BLOOE EL-X E1-677
I thought it was the remnant of a supernova, but I guess I was wrong. Planetary nebula, learning something new every day.
.
I wish Ctrl-C would work in the galaxy map and put the currently select system name in the paste buffer.
Ctrl-V works fine, but the other way around I resort to taking a screenshot and typing that over. My memory is not good enough anymore to memorize those strings at night.
It would be even better if it came with coordinates. I log my interesting entries like this EOK BLOOE EL-X E1-677 [-1641, -1656, 27473] counting out the position on the map.
Makes it easy to calculate distances and plot a map afterwards.

Sigh.

This has annoyed me for some time as well.
Most explorers is gonna have an ASP or the only better exploration ship ; The Anaconda already.
This is pretty useless unless you are very early in the game, and in that case, exploration isn't gonna be the thing you're doing anyways.
