Cheaters are Everywhere

If a player cheats his way to the best ship with the best weapons and invincible shields and also has god mode... so what? It would only matter in the exceedingly minute chance I might ever run across him in this vast sandbox. He's just some lonely guy with an insecurity complex, I have more interesting things to occupy my time with in the game.

The only way to ban cheaters effectively is to move them into their own galaxy. The 2000Ly jump cheat is a great example of why Solo isn't quite enough. Maybe a second galaxy that's effectively static, i.e. doesn't have the same exploration data, dynamic markets and any kind of community goals. Just a place for cheats to hang out and play?

yup and it has been going on for ages since they figured it was P2P architecture with client files.

One of the reasons I refuse to go into Open as I don't want my limited pleasure time ruined by kiddies and cheaters who will not get punished or stopped. I am an old boy Elite 84'er and solo mode suits me just fine.

Yup it is quite the problem. There are even ways to log into the game twice and teleport cargo back and forth between stations without travel time. It is nasty :(

I've played this game since early beta, and I havent run into a single "griefer" or cheater or exploiter. And I've been around the block in Lave, Leesti, Eravate etc. You people are just fear mongerers "OPEN IS FULL OF CHEATERS AND AND PEOPLE SHOOT ME". And yeah, I got destroyed once by that PDT turret-shoots a station thingy. I thought it was cool, figured out what happened and then prevented it from ever happening again. Big deal. I died a lot more when I was a noobie.

You imagine that thats how open is, without any real experience. You read posts like OP's, and fill your cute little heads with thoughts of utter chaos. I see Open play is still a boogie man for some players.

Did it occur to you that the players were using heat sinks to extend their laser fire time? Or that the player not moving with the turrets had disabled their thrusters to fit the extra weapons? Or that perhaps they had paid many millions for extra hull shielding? They also use shield boosters to extend their shield power, you know all this right? Yet you insinuate it is cheating? Sounds dishonest of you, how about you just get good at the game..

yup, cause we definitely have modules so efficient that shied stay at 100%
and we have hull repairer, allowing you to stay under fire with no shield and keep 100% hull.....

please, just google it yourself, it is very easy to find thread with many details regarding what it is possible to do, among those:

freeze shield / ammo / hull / energy value
change weapon damage
instant jump / custom jump range (like crazy range, 1000 or 2000ly or even more).

many more details are given, as well as some method they are using (they alter memory, not the game files for those wondering).

this is knwon since alpha, FDEV doesn't care.

I don't understand why they waste time cheating. There's no 'end game' here so no real point in cheating.

They are using this to gather money like those "supporters" did with money making glitch which was there quite a while ago. What Frontier did was just disable the glitch so those who used this glitch kept their Cr until today.

"Full of cheaters" is clearly an exaggeration, and the subject "cheaters are everywhere" doesn't do anyone any favours. But... there must be a few dozen out there. Would it annoy you to go exploring, and find a pristine world with a "discovered by..." of some guy who jumped 2000Ly just for the lolz? You're basically correct. Out of 400,000 users you'll only come across anyone with a very low probability, never mind a cheater. I've been in Open for the first time around Tionisla, Zaonce and Lave today for a few hours, and saw about 20 or 30 CMDRs, none of whom even paid me the slightest bit of attention. But it isn't about how it affects me. It's about how it affects the game and those who play it thinking it's an honest, fun, space game. Perception is king. I hate the idea of cheats being in this happy little galaxy. Anyone who exploits rules that FD haven't tightened up sufficiently is just playing the game, no matter how irrititatingly or otherwise. Cheats ruin it for everyone else.

All they need to do is shift the variables that are being hacked on a frequent basis. Like a new 20kb patch every day. It will quickly become too much hassle for the hackers to keep up with it.
Whilst that might help it certainly wouldn't be enough, unfortunately. I worked on CS1.6 anticheats for about 5 years and it fast becomes a cat & mouse game, FD change an offset and cheat coders will release updated offsets shortly after. This is the game the cheat makers love, they enjoy being able to find the latest offset and will not pass up an opportunity to play a cat & mouse game a bit more, if they don't release an update then it would be seen as 1 point to FD, and the cheat makers won't give up and let that happen if they can help it. There would need to be some serious low level changes to make this game 'secure' in Open mode.

I'll be staying in Solo and Group for the foreseeable future.

I am sorry, you do realise how statistically unlikely it is that you will encounter the same people randomly in this game ? Even in a place like Lave it is not guaranteed you will be placed in the same instance with the presumed "cheater". This stuff happens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1V8DEmkE4k). Sticking one's head in the sand does not make it go away. Though to be fair, I have no idea how FDEV would even begin to try and fix the problem, beyond relying on players to report the cheaters and putting them into their own instances.

If these are file hacks, FD need to run a diff check against key files and then kick the client on a mismatch. Should be simple.

I agree 100% and for them not to do this is really making me scratch my head in asking, are they doing it on purpose. is this just another way for a company to gain money from there player base? that wish to pay for cheets?

Jimmy OUT!!!

i seem to remember in the original elite "84" the cheats/hacks were built in !,something like hold control h and w to get into witch space and fight thargoids whenever you wanted.

Isnt FD a pretty small company? Maybe they don't have the resources to devote to stopping cheaters? People cheat in every MMO I have ever been in, even the multibillion dollar ones. Its a fact of online play. Personally its like wasting £40. Never been able to fathom the cheat mentality.

Hi All

When fighting against other players have you discovered you cannot damage their hull? or you cannot get their hull below a certain percentage? or you cannot get rid of their shields? or they never seem to run out of energy for their weapons? Or despite the craft you're fighting against with its possible load-outs your weapons seem weaker than usual against it?
.
Or maybe you have noticed a human player sat in a conflict zone or navigation beacon with turreted weapons who never seems to move his ship? It just automatically blasts and blasts for hours and hours with there being no indication there's a conscious pilot behind it?
.
There is a very nasty website out there which has figured out this is only a part-online game. A lot of files which can be hacked to cheat are kept on our side. What is disgusting is it has over 100 pages of user debate and contribution from people who are obviously playing this game. I think we need to stop this out. We need to start noting the names of players which seem to be using exploits and reporting them for investigation.

You must be new. This has been a terrible problem the entire time. You won't get much sympathy from people here, nor the devs. It was an included game mechanic when FD decided on their networking, P2P, and P2S models. Best to just... move on.

I am forming the opinion that many of the reports of cheats and griefers are being spread by people with an agenda. The actual incidence of both is insignificant compared to the player base and the size of the sandpit we play in.

It's all part of the meta game. Forum / reporting warfare has been going on forever, mostly one gang trying to make some other gang by trying to look like that gang whilst picking a fight with yet another gang. It won't stop until they get what they want.

if you mean the glitch that "supporters" were able to exploit and shinrarta then FD did quite a bit more than just disable the glitch, I know of several peeps who had all their money less 1000 CR and in some cases expensive ship modules removed. For one guy I know that was 30 million. He had been open to FD about using the exploit and had ticketed it and then destroyed his gains, but still lost a pile of cash. He was already in a fairly won python too.

So, FD did take quite punitive action where they found evidence of the glitch having been used.

They have stated quite clearly that they intend to take action against cheaters. Just put anyone you see, that you believe is cheating on the iggy list and if everyone does that, pretty soon cheating will be meaningless because NPCs don't get jelly of your pimped out conda!!

:)
