A rewarding 48 days exploration trip

The displayed level 2 & 3 scans are clearly bugged atm. The most plausible explanation I've seen so far is that they are both displaying detailed surface scans with 'level 2' showing those sold since the 1.1 patch came out (10th Feb) and 'level 3' showing those sold before 1.1.

Hope this is correct and you just figured it out, because I'm confused as hail.

Thank you for the inspiration. I'm only my first day into my own pilgrimage to galactic center and already getting bored. I saw your payout and went "Yah, just keep going man, you can do this"

If you are doing exploration for the money only you will be miserable after a few days.

As far as I understand it L2 and L3 scans have not been implemented yet. I stand to be corrected on that, but fairly sure.

How do you plot a route to find neutron stars? Is there a way to find them? Can you scoop fuel from a neutron star? Also, I am guessing they bring in more credits than other bodies?

Filter the galaxy map to show non-sequence stars, then plot a course to them. No you can't scoop from them. Yes, NS and black holes pay significantly more than other Stella bodies.

Thanks Flector. My trip should pay our more than 100m, so I may scrape into Elite with this trip, or I might need to make another run into the black.

How do you plot a route to find neutron stars?
The big neutron star fields are around 1,000ly below or above the galactic plane and in towards the core. AUCOPP MM-M D7-0 is near the start of the 'below' field, they get far more numerous further in towards the core. Check out the area around BOERTH IB-F D11-2032 ... and there are even more further in towards the core; there are probably billions of them in total

Is there a way to find them?
Set your galactic map to show non sequence stars. They show as grey in the map view.

Can you scoop fuel from a neutron star?
No. They are difficult to see and dangerous. Always fly away a few light seconds from a neutron star before targeting and jumping to a new system to avoid accidentally getting too close.

Also, I am guessing they bring in more credits than other bodies?
Yes indeed. Not quite as much as a black hole but they are far more numerous.

Hope that helps!

(Pah, ninja'd) ;)

That would follow for me. I don't believe I did any scanning before that update.

Congratulations commander!
What next? More exploring? :D

First I will do a little bit of trading and shooting, and participate in my very first  community goal.

But I am certain that I will go back to exploring at some time. I still want to visit the edges of the galaxy.
This time likely in an Anaconda or maybe one of the future ships.

Congrats commander. Great trip
planning a trip too with a friend and i am curious if we travel together in wing and get open new system - who will be marked as discoverer? can it be two names or the one who first jumped into the system?

Well done! Thats a long journey and a handsome pay check for your trouble. ELITE too. Now that you have Trader rank of Elite do you think it will affect your game play? Play less explorer and more of another role for example? Or will you keep on going. Just interested.

That's a matter of taste. Some people like to wander aimlessly, while others will make sure to get to a chosen destination as soon as possible. It is all good.

Personally I did not have any fixed plan, except that I would visit the Great Annihilator and Sagittarius. The rest of the journey was determined by visiting interesting nearby nebulas and systems. So I did not have a grand plan or route, but it just unfolded as I was choosing many local destinations.

Congratulations on your 7 week trip!
And Right On Cmdr about hitting Elite! I'm doing much the same as you for much the same motivations.

How does an explorer set his destination? I just tend to fly in generally no direction?
Check my sig. :D

Congrats. I've done some exploring, now trading in a wing to earn the credits to purchase and kit out an Asp for real exploring.

edit: regards level scans: last time I checked, all my scans were "level 1". It now shows

Systems visited: 351
Profits from exploration 3,385,808
Level 2 detailed scans: 1064
Level 2 detailed scans 4

Which is odd, as I scanned every star and planet in the systems I explored. Will have a quick exploration later and see what it affects.

Got back tonight from my 6 day stint.
2.5k LY (first proper explore).
over 2mil credits, 3 black holes (2 in one system).
over 100 stellar bodies with my name on them as first discoverer.

"A nice sum of money (although like most explorers I'm not in it for the money).
.
Trip statistics:
1096 Neutron stars"

.
So many people speak of their own valour and worthiness............and then do stuff like this in the same post....... Not sure why Explorers like to put themselves above others with their "for the love of it" pomposity. When it is clear from the Stats, that you must have gone nearly insane night after night after night of Neutron farming......
.
No objection to you doing it..........but don't tell us you did it for the love of it...........

Exploration is still at the bottom of the barrel for credits per hour compared to any other occupation in this game currently, even with the profit boost introduced in 1.2. The idea of going out to explore for credits alone is absurd when you factor the amount of time and repetition required to do so, it makes grinding trade runs look like fun. This is why for the majority of people exploring it literally isn't about the credits but more for the love of seeing parts of the galaxy others have not. Saying that though obviously as an explorer you do need to make money somehow and it just so happens Neutrons and black holes pay something more resonable than hoping you bump into ELW's or terraformable planets. I don't think anybody who loves exploring feels superior in any way shape or form to any other occupation, we/they aren't, it's just that to try to make your predominant career in exploration over combat or trading you REALLY have to love doing it.

I'd like to add that the idea of getting my name on a star as 'first discovered by' has a lot going for it. To get a whole string of them like the OP, well, that would be awesome. It adds a little bit to the galactic lore, and might eventually push explorers to visit the far rim. Even with 400 billion stars, Probably most within 4000LY already have a name on them. Maybe there is a lonely string of 30LY jumps near human space with no discoverer listed, but otherwise I expect to have to go quite a way now.

Just like to add that I've been playing Elite Dangerous for 27 hours now (according to STEAM) and literally every second has been "exploring". I have nothing except the basic discovery scanner, the 500ls-range D-scanner and the rest of my modules are just 1 step up from the loaned ones you start with because I'm saving all my money for better scanning stuff. Oh and I'm only flying a Sidewinder (thought about upgrading to an Eagle but I seem to have become fond and attached to my humble little Sidewinder).

27 hours of this and I've yet to get bored. It's really not about money, I just love going to new systems that I haven't yet been to, seeing how many stars are in that solar system and what type they are, seeing what types of planets are orbiting them and how many, it's all just completely awesome. I haven't done the math (and I won't try because I'm terrible at math) but if I could possibly visit and explore every single one of the 400 billion stars in this game in my lifetime (I estimate I have maybe 40 to 60 years left, depending on various factors of course) then I would.

Today my explorer rank went to scout and I found my first planet with life on. My ultimate goal is to get my name on an entire solar system - the star/s and all the planets and moons. Even if it's only one I'll be happy. And when I've done that I'll carry on exploring because I love it!!!

Mate, you dont have to go that far out to find undiscovered systems, I found about 10 through the week, not even 500ly away from habited space. They now have my name on them. :p
