Level 2 and 3 detailed scans

I checked those stats last night. Both 0. My Rank is Trailblazer, playing since release. Never used a detailed surface scanner, so the second 0 is correct.

My level 3 scans went from 0 to 732 after the last patch. I did some more exploration and sold the data, but level 3 staid at 732.

I would like to hear from someone who has cashed in their exploration data after this update was made to see that everything is working well now though. :)

I did no exploration whatsoever up to the release of the new patch, so had zero scans of any sort showing. Since the patch however, I have started to explore and kitted out a Cobra with the Advanced Discovery Scanner and Detailed Surface Scanner, figuring if I'm gonna do it then I may as well do it properly.

Since selling some data using the above machinery:

Level 2 Detailed Scans: 302;
Level 3 Detailed Scans: 0.

It would seem that the results showing are desrever. Sorry, reversed...

doog yrev, doog yrev ;)

The scans are not exactly reversed. Level 2 scans is showing what level 3 scans should be but level 3 scans do NOT show what level 2 scans should be.

This is easy to test, I have done so myself. Just go out on a quick exploring trip with only a discovery scanner and no detailed surface scanner. If the L2 and L3 numbers where reversed then you should see an increase of the level 3 scans when you sell the exploration data without a detailed surface scanner. But I have tried this and found out that level 3 scans do not increase when I sell simple surface scans that was made without a detailed surface scanner. I have tested most possible combinations of scanners and I have been unable to make level 3 number increase.

That is why I think it is more plausible that Level 3 scans is currently showing scans made before patch 1.1. But this is of course impossible to test since I can't make new scans before patch 1.1... :)

We will have to wait until we hear from a developer regarding this bug before we ca be totally sure what level 3 is. It will probably be fixed in next small patch.

Completed a 12k LY round trip to statue liberty neb, have DSS and ADS my lvl2 went up around 580, lvl 3 is 0. I had only been exploring the last 8 days though first time.

I am recently returned from a trip to Sagittarius A* and a returned with data from almost 3000 star systems. I have been in the process of selling it off at various stations in order to work up my faction. After the most recent patch I discovered that it shows I have Level 2,3 scans.

System Visited: 3460
Level 2 Detailed Scans: 2395
Level 3 Detailed Scans: 393

After looking carefully though my scan data as I was selling it I discovered very rarely that the scan data on a few system showed in addition to 'Detailed Surface Data' from my DSS, a few also showed 'Penetrative Scan'. When I sold any data that included Penetrative Scans, my Level 3 scan count went up accordingly. The Penetrative Scan is always following a Detailed Scan, never by itself. I could find no rhyme or reason for when this type of scan occurred and have not discovered any way to make it happen, but if it was present it always applied to all Detailed Scanned objects in the system. Also, these objects do not appear to show any additional information in the System display. More importantly it increases the value of that scan data by nearly 100%. Penetrative scans are not new, others have seen them in their scan data and there appear to have been mentioned by FD back in Beta 2/3 but have not been seen since.

So scans break down as such:
Level 1: Discovery scan or possibly scanned without the use of a DSS (no count displayed so impossible to tell)
Level 2: Detailed scan using DSS
Level 3: Penetrative Scan (Don't currently know make this happen, just seem to occur rarely at random)

I will try to post some screenshots later and maybe try to figure out how to post a video if I get motivated enough.
Hope this helps

This is very interesting. I seem to have a very large number of l3 scans relitive to the little exploring I've done (Only just got advanced discovery scanner ftw)..*logs in to check* 862 l2 and 238 level 3's. I've noticed that sometimes you will get a second round of scanning after your first round when scanning an item - you'll get the report of scan complete, then it will still say 'unexplored' and scan some more; This seems to especially happen when particularly close to objects; Will test this out some tomorrow. For now, sleep.

Now this is getting interesting...

Yes, I have noticed this before on a couple of planetary objects, but for me, it doesn't show anything in the scan results. This maybe because I can't work out how to scroll through the results in the cartography information. I can't put focus on the list of scanned planetary objects to the right of the corresponding entry. I have been using a HOTAS though, maybe there's a keyboard key that does the job?

I thought that this second scan, or more penetrative scan, was a bug or mistake on my part, as if I'd moved the ship enough to reset scanning, but then noticed while scanning an asteroid belt, whilst not moving, that the scan finished and a new one began. I first thought that it had picked a new object to scan all by itself, an object immediately behind or in front which I had failed to notice, but this was not so. Yes, I scan asteroid belts. The completionist in me will not let me pass them by. And I hate myself for it. :D

Now all we need is more confirmations of this behaviour.

Edit: From what I've observed, similar to the findings of outasync and gamlain, there is no correlation between type of object scanned and penetrative scan, it just happens randomly.

Aren't level 2 scans where you partially scan a system, and level 3 scans where you DS scan every body within a system? Sounds about right IMO.

I always assumed the re-scan happens when there's a server glitch. It seems to me it happens more often during peak times.

Just checked my log and I have 3,651 L2 and 1,393 L3 scans listed over 526 systems - considering myself a "cartographer" rather than going for "altitude records", I have been scanning asteroid belts since Gamma and to my mind the ratio kind of equates to the number of belt fragments to normal planets and stars. I'm not so sure about the systems completely scanned theory, as I would say one third of the 526 systems surveyed would have been done with the Intermediate Discovery Scanner and having revisited some of them with the ADS, they are generally not showing additional bodies, but I could be wrong on that.
.
I do know that you get credited for first discoveries on Asteroid belt fragments, as there were a heap of them against my CMDR name in the data dump Michael released, so the back end servers do track them even though you don't get money for them (yet), which is partially the reason I don't skip them, as there must be some mechanic in the future that will "fill in" that "feature gap" (there's got to be another threadnought coming for that one ;) ).
