Killed an un-wanted player. Would you have done the same?

I think you're a bit confused. The OP wasn't the bully, the cobra was. Sooner or later someone stands up to bullies and puts them in their place, which is what the OP did.
By losing his ship, the cobra pilot learned a lesson that his actions have consequences.

If he was let go, he would probably have waited for the clipper to leave, and would have gone back to kill the sidewinder. Sometimes some people need the hard lesson in life. The cobra got his.

Justified.

However its possible the Cobra pilot was just not paying attention and took the CMDR as yet another Wanted Pirate Sidewinder in the R.E.S.

Did you warn him first?

Here...Have a +1 - you absolutely did the right thing. Very good...very very good. Protected the newbie...and guess what, if that kid wasnt hooked before, then he is now esp after watching you save him like that.

I think this is probably the most important gambit to emerge from this scenario. Rookie got an awesome intro to the game with an exciting near-death experience, and is more likely to pass along the justice-based lovins to the deserving if they end up in the same types of scenarios in future where they're the Batman guy.

Did you warn the Cobra, explain the situation? I applaud you for protecting the Sidey, but it would have more weight with an added explanation.

Probably no time. A kitted Cobra can melt a Sidewinder in like 15 seconds. So, you can try to warn the Cobra or you can stop him.

Would you have done the same? Did I make the right call? I don't like bullies picking on the new kids.

I probably wouldn't have been sufficiently aware of the situation to be able to interceded in time - but I'd like to think that if I was presented the same situation I would have done just enough to take the pressure off the Sidewinder, then let the offending CMDR go with a warning. I can appreciate that when an Expert Cobra is attacking a Harmless Sidewinder, there really isn't enough time to send off a politely worded "Hey, dude - you might want to reconsider attacking that new player", but I'll bet there was plenty of time while he was weaving in and out of the asteroids.

Don't mistake me, though - I applaud your civic mindedness!

I must be honest, though - I have cleared a Nav Point of minor 200 CR NPC bounties, just 'cause I was irritated with the way they clog up the Contacts panel, and all their laser fire against the local yokels makes me think something interesting is going on. But that's only because the NPCs ignore my messages to clear out and pay off their bounty :D

It was just in-game experience. Countless times I have seen one commander go after another, after he inadvertently hit a police ship during a scuttle. So as soon as I saw the sidewinder go wanted (I'm not even sure HE knew).. I started following on the cobra's tail... literally right on his ass. I was ready. I was already close, because all 3 of us were attacking the same larger target NPC (I'm pretty sure).

There should be different levels of Wanted. A lower level for minor misdemeanors, such as accidentally hitting a police ship. And then pirating should be a more serious level, and the highest level for random griefing - these shouldn't be bounties, they should result in a "jail sentence" where if they are killed by another player, their rescue capsule is impounded by the police for a set period. Maybe a few days for a first offence, and then more for repeat offenders.

I've been griefed twice and frankly I don't have the time for it, so am going solo, which is a bit of a shame.

Agree, technically not a legal solution (you got a bounty yourself) but I would have done the same.
I'm glad the Sidey got away to live another day (and stay in the game), and the Cobra learnt a valuable lesson.

In space, sometimes might is right.

Might should always serve right. In this case, it absolutely did. Ain't it lovely when reality imitates the ideal? ;)

Good call. I would have done the same thing.

As for 'warning' the Cobra, I'm sure he didn't bother to offer an explanation to the Sidewinder pilot. All the warning he was entitled to was when his ship started it's death scream.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

One of my best times to date was an experience at a Nav beacon where I was deep in combat, saw another red icon and shot. Quickly I realized it was another player and we chatted a bit. A wing seemed to make sense (I had never played in one) and what the heck, we formed up and had a blast.

It was very memorable and profitable.

In your situation, meh, hard to say. If I had noticed I probably would have done the same. There isn't much time to l
ask a higher geared pilot to lay off a sidey.

You did good Commander!

In the situation, as presented, I'm pretty sure I'd have done exactly the same.

Now, if the second pilot had also been Harmless or Mostly Harmless in a Sidey, I'd probably have let the Sideys duel. That's a fair enough fight for both players to learn from it.

But an expert Cobra attacking a newbie... I'm not going to sit there and let an experienced player ruin a newbie's day over a 200CR bounty.
