FDL or Python...

I'm fairly casual so it's taken me a LONG time to get to this point. I prefer fighting to trade, by a long long margin. I love the look of the Python, but by all accounts I figure the FDL is a better fighter.

Thoughts and opinions? Pros and cons? (From those that have flown both).

Cheers for your time :)

Edit: I plan to mission grind a fair bit once Powerplay is out. Should this influence my choice do you think?

Edit edit: OR, what about a Dropship instead? :p

Python can fight just fine, shields are a bit weaker and it's a fair bit slower, but it has stupid amounts of available power and the second strongest weapon load out in the game. You can run essentially any weapons you care to and power a pair of high end SCBs with hardpoints deployed.

I have much more, and much more recent experience, in the FDL, but I have fought CMDRs in 1.2 Pythons.

If Cr is an issue for you, bear in mind you need 150mil to get decent Python (90 will suffice for RES in Solo). I've never maxed out a FdL but it it will cost less than a Python die to smaller modules.

If you can afford to fit it out properly, I'd give the edge to the Python in a 1 vs 1 against the FdL.

The FDL is cheaper, and faster but only does one thing and not that well imo. It loses momentum and has an awful pitch rate.
the dropship is a waste of time and money until they add transport missions and have armor protect subsystems.
honestly get the Python, because it can trade you will be able to make more money with it. You can also go crazy on outfitting it for combat once you have the cash. It's the better ship by far.

Hey, there's another thread that has been running recently on FDL vs Python...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=137744&highlight=python

Your questions is slightly different so my opinion is:
- Po to dropship (unless 1.3 brings in passenger mechanics)
- Python has way more firepower and less agility than FDL (I have never flown FDL, it's just what others say - despite the fact that the stats suggest python has more maneuverability)
- FDL may not be so useful for running missions due to poor jump range - whilst it has very little cargo capacity it is probably good enough for missions.
- Python is one of the best traders in the game - so it offers you that option...

Costs... (again I stress I have never flown FDL, just basing this on others comments and ED Shipyard)

FDL - fighting spec - 70-80mil (probably get an ok one for 60?!?!?)
Python (which I currently fly) - fighting spec 160mil (killer) with 164t cargo - allrouder (fine for all PVE) 110mil with 260tcargo - Trader 70mil with 284t cargo

Fighting in FDL is much more enjoyable. It does not have such hard punch like Python but when you learn how to use the huge hardpoint then it may become scary ship to deal with.

I have used both and I can with all honesty say that for pure combat I would choose FDL over Python. It's simply a lot more "fun" to fight in than in Python. For everything else Python will be better choice.

And as missions go, you will not have any problem with missions in FDL. Maybe only with ones that require a lot of long range jumps to do but that's it.

Fer de Lance didn't give me the best impression, but I'll try some other loadouts. The Class 4 cannon projectile speed seems very slow; is the PA projectile any faster? I might need to just bung a class 3 laser there.

I fear it might be back to the Jameson Memorial for the FdL though.

Yes, but still slow.

Normally, I run a large fixed beam laser.

Reading it fully tells me that the Python is the better mission running ship. That will be my goal then.

Either ship can run missions well enough.

I was able to get 50 tons of cargo space on my FDL while still having enough sheilds and weapons to do high-end Assassination missions without issue. The A2 fuel scoop on this setup was pretty painful, but if you use economy route planning it's not a big deal.

One of my "general purpose" FDL setups: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60O,4zg7u57u55Rr5Rr0_g0_g0_g0_g01Q0Wg,2-7_7_6Q6u9Y6u5A,08c0727RA4xo02M

I have both.

FdL is an amazing pursuit combat ship.

Python is slower but has loads of internals, tons of power and brutal firepower making it an awesome ship if you wanna be a pirate.

Exactly my dilemma last night.

I decided for the Python and went back to the RES site after emptying my wallet.

Great firepower, good cap, awful mobility.
My 21mil Vulture would kill this ship I fitted in less than a minute.

I kinda think of the FDL now.

How much money do you have Op?

A Python you can buy and fit quite modestly, then upgrade as you go, particularly if you are doing trade runs. If you get an FDL you really do have to be able to A-spec it almost immediately or you'll end up being pirate bait.

Morbad's FdL setup looks pretty good to me. I think I got the silly notion in my head that I needed a Class 4 weapon in that huge mount, which just adds such a huge amount to the cost.

I'll make my choice tonight after I grind out another few million. I'll fly back to Jameson's Memorial and flip a coin. You've all been wonderful, cheers for the insight and commentary. Again, sorry for making a duplicate post.

PvE for running missions and shooting NPCs, then get the Python. It'll even land at outposts.

PvP the Furry-Lance got an edge due to higher speed, better maneuverability and stronger shields than the Python.

I've had both ships and think they are great..In the end I went back to the versatility of the Python .. I do miss the looks of the FDL and the awesome noise it makes.

+1 for morbads loadout, I used almost the exact same thing though didn't use a beam on the large as i dislike mixed lasers, this allowed me to run the full sized shield, but its a really strong loadout just customise the multi-cannons to your favored projectile weapon and have at it.

Practice with it, i'm fairly convinced no ship RES's faster than the python and you'd have to be asleep to lose to a vulture just bluezone reverse.
