Community Event / Creation Frontier: Elite 2 Introduction re-make

Greetings commanders!

For some time I have been thinking of working on a re-make of the iconic FE2 introduction sequence. It struck me that it would make sense for me to gather people who are interested in helping.

Let's start with a show of hands?
Then we can start to think about organizing the tasks and thinking about story boarding, concepts, mockups etc..

For reference, here is the original Amiga version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzEj4Gq7fT4

Most importantly, thank you for all the support and suggestions! :D

Signing up.

Kerrash: Can you record the ordinal so we have the reference? We can then break it down into shorts and scout those locations and work out what we need for each shot.

I can help. I'll happily use/donate ships or cash to be used as per the title.

To save waiting for planetary landings, you could have the start of the remake showing the original footage, and then slowly morphing into the modern game to highlight how much things have moved on :)

Would give me an excuse to come back to civilisation. Aye, subject to when etc. Ideally when we can get most people at a time when the internet is not getting hammered, allowing a better chance for actually being in the same instance.

Anyone who has not saw AndyJ's FFE version of the game, really should. The retexturing and debugging of the game is amazing, his work is outstanding. Why mention it here? To give you a feel of how it could have looked all those years ago... not quite what we have today with ED however it does look amazingly close to what we had and have now.

Have a look at this old version of AndyJs mod intro:

I posted on Kerrash's Twitch stream that I'd have a crack at the opting titles.

Should have something to show in a few days.

Obviously the PL section is a air-gap right now, but I am confident we can work together to build up the other shots first.
With the announcement of the Imperial Courier coming to PowerPlay, this is just one more piece of the puzzle ;)

As director (and executive producer) on this project I have a question for you.

How faithful do we have to be to the original FE2 introduction sequence?

This will effect how I design the title objects. Looking at the YouTube sequence you posted the intro titles lasts for 30 secs.

If we are going to be 100% faithful then I'll have to generate blocky letters as well as the background for the first 30secs with a
cut to game graphics when the ship flies into view.

Personally I think that this transition will be somewhat jarring.

But if this project is to be a homage then we can update things a bit.

I rather like opening sequences where the background of the titles is part of the first scene of the film. Think "Star Wars: A New Hope"
or "Men in Black".

In that case the opening sequence would need a ringed planet establishing shot with the ship appearing 30 secs into it, and my title
sequence would have a green background so that it could be cromakeyed over the first 30 secs of that sequence.

I would also like to update the font models to a more rounded version - which would be more in keeping with the graphics from the
modern game.

What do you think?

I would like to keep the new sequence as true to the original as we can keep it for now.
That way we can make a rough cut first and then see what would work better with any update.

Before we go down the route of too much work a first step might be to find an ideal set of planets close to populated space that would suit the concept.
So the first role up for grabs is location scout! :D ;)

Obviously we will need a ringed planet and a populated earth like nearby

That was kinda the thing I had in mind, yes.

Only I am planning a little more animation of the "Frontier".
I'll start them of has simple spheres for the movement part of the sequence
and then, when they are lined up in front of the camera, "grow" them into
the letters as they rotate to face the camera.

what about Sol. Saturn has rings and Earth is pretty earthlike... :)

thats actually not a bad idea we will need to access one of the smaller stations also for the second segment wherer the courier flys through its rings (are there stations like that even in ED?)

but earth would be a good place for the opening shot perhaps ross 154 also (i think thtas where the original intro was set " dont hold me to that one ")

achenar would also be a good place since converstion is orbiting a rinnged gas giant close by

*edit appologies for my lousy spelling "tis why i do videos and music rather than text" :)

the only problem is for the big ship we'd have to use sol as i dont think there is anywhere else that has a non combatant stationary cap ship.. PLUS! with the 1km warning for neutrals now in game it would probably be the only ship we can tour round for filming without getting shot to sh***

only drawback to that however is as soon as the courier opens up on the eagle all hell would break loose
