Have I hit the Exploration wall?

I'm 9500ly out from SOL....less than 1/2 way to the Great Annihilator.....I'm seriously thinking of returning to sell what will probably be 20mill of data (with return scans). I know that If I do that I'll be narked off with myself for giving up. I'm just sat here and don't know what course to set.......damn.

Think long and hard about your options.

I set out several weeks ago and enjoyed the whole journey to Sag A.

I predicted it would take 2 weeks to get there and roughly the same to get back.

It took 4 weeks to get there and I'm still 13K from home.

I'm bored.

Very, very bored.

I want to shoot things, I want to trade things, I want to do anything other than jump, scan, jump, scan, jump, scan, scoop, jump etc etc etc.

I've hovered over the self destruct button on more than one occasion.

So if your bored now, it will get worse. Much much worse.

My hat goes off to those who can spend months out in the black. It turns out I'm not one of them.

It sounds like you may not be one either.

It's better to try and fail than never try at all. Trite I know. True though.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yeah that is how I feel a bit, although not exactly "bored"...more like "jaded". I want a break, but every second I'm not travelling in I feel is being wasted!

cheers for the replies, gave me much to ponder. I feel like I'm climbing a steep hill on a pushbike...top of the hill is half way to G.Annihilator...if I can just get there it'll feel like I'm on the downward side of the hill. I'm 2000 or so LY away from that point.

I'm gritting my teeth and pushing through the barrier and set another 1000ly course closer........my sanity may be sacrificed! ;)

btw I'm not "honk/scoop/jumping"...I'm exploring EVERY system I visit, and picking out what to scan or leave.

Garix, I am heading that way myself. When you say it took you four weeks, how many hours a day was that and did you do much in the way of scanning?

Thanks for the info Garix. My last trip I scanned everything and messed about a lot. I didn't get far, maybe 1500ly out. It took a long time due to all the scanning. I am starting to wonder wether I have the time to do major exploration trips. It will be 2020 by the time I get to the Great Annihilator!

You could also ditch the route planner for a while, and look for some nice worlds such as Earth-likes. Pick promising stars manually while you head in the general direction of your destination. Alternatively, you could find something new to listen to while you're making your way back. Maybe make some exploration memes for the forums. (#JustExplorerThings)

My route through space is following a path to an end point , but has lots of places of interest along the way.. so i've set many milestone regions to visit.. just makes it more interesting.

You'll get a second wind - I had enough at about 7500ly out - now currently at about 16,500ly which is under 10kly from Sagi A* so it'd be foolish to turn back, right ?

I've not actually been doing any of the tourist hotspots as I thought I could do them on my way home, probably in a few months time ;)

I got pretty bored just going to orion... I can only imagine going to the center of the Galaxy since my exploration was just 1.5k ly. I went back because I was satisfied and wanted to go kill things.

What would be nice is to have two characters... One for exploring and one for combat.

I'm in the same situation, and I am returning. I find those long long trips fun, really, but after 2 weeks I'm starting to miss docking, RES's, trading with my conda, pew-pewing with my vulture etc etc... Also, when I hit a close companion after exiting hyperspace things will all be over and you loose all the data.

I explore until it starts to become a grind, then I happily turn around and head home. There will be enough left to explore for a next trip, and a next, and a next...

I always suggest people stop and rest if exploring makes them physically and mentally tired - remember, a tired pilot is a dead pilot in this Dangerous universe - but that also includes if you are spiritually and emotionally tired. In this age of single commander accounts, a break will do you a power of good in the long run. You'll get back into the swing of things soon enough. :)

Just travelling is boring.

You have set yourself a goal and are doggedly travelling to it. That is a recipe for burnout.

Set mini goals instead.

Filter the galaxy map for rare star types, go see if there are any roughly on the route you are taking. Visit them
Look for nebulas roughly on your route, take detours and go see them.
Take photos! Pretty pictures to show to anyone else who looks.
Alternate between fast travel and looking around.

I also found writing about my journey helped me keep focus. I set out in my Clipper nearly two months ago. I reached Sagittarius A* in about a month, I thought it would take a couple of weeks but it was only quite a short way in that I realised I could get really bored. So I started up my blog. I don't think many people actually read it, but that's not the point, it is my log of the trip. And it helps me keep track of the memorable events.

Don't get me wrong, I do still yearn to be back in civilised... sorry populated space sometimes. Then I look at the galaxy map and and spot another carbon star, or another O class and simply must pop over to have a look.

The journey is not for everyone, but everyone can make it if they set about it the right way.

Best of luck whatever you choose Commander!

I am usually burnt out somewhere around the mid of my long expeditions, and I was thinking more than once to abandon whatever was my current goal and just head straight back home. But I've never done that. Also, when I finally dock, it's a huge relief and it feels like I am done with exploration for good. Yet, after few days on vacation, I find myself out in the void again

No matter how bland and repetitive exploration may be, there is something which pulls me back to distant suns over and over again. And it's still more interesting than any other activity in game.

Oh, and to add, don't forget to do some risky things :)

Taking a risk many thousands of ly away from home will quicken your heart rate and give you an idea just how important surviving is. My first one in a dark time during the first 10k ly was shortly after debug cam. I dropped into a metallic ring for the photos and was running full throttle through the roids while using the camera.

Could have ended very badly, felt awesome.
