Trying to decide on Eagle or Hauler for first real ship!

The Sidewinder IS a real ship. I call it the space Beetle but with upgrades, it's quite capable. I stayed in it until I could buy and build the Adder I wanted. Skipped the Eagle and Hauler entirely at first.

That reminds me of that episode of Star Trek TNG when Captain Picard takes in this beat up old shuttle and he totally treats the guy as a real captain, which was kind of awesome in my book. One of the bridge officers was like "That dude is flying a POS" and Picard is just like "Hey, he's the captain of that POS"

I agree with those suggesting the Adder. It's what I went into on my way from Sidewinder to Cobra. A bit more capable of defending itself. After spending some time trading rares in the Cobra, then I bought an Eagle and had a lot of fun in it. Having enough cash in reserve not to mind losing the Eagle increased the enjoyment.

I went for the hauler first as I wasn't confident in fighting. I earnt enough to upgrade to an eagle. collecting bounties in RES zones is where its at for early credit earning. if you get aligned with the system vessels you can generally take on far bigger ships and in turn earn far bigger bounties. Boming back with 500k bounties compare to 20k for trading slaves changed my mind forever. BH all the away

You cal call the Sidewinder a POS all day long. I'm just saying that I put several thousand in upgrades in it and that POS earned me enough loot to buy a $600,000 Adder.

Just saying. ;-)

Also remember that, when implemented, the Sidewinder will possibly be the only ship that will fit in the Anaconda's launch bay that you can buy.

Use your Sidey to go on a combined trading/exploration/ bounty hunting trip, that is take a mission from the BB (that you can do of course!) scan that system, check out the nav point for some wanted NPC's deliver the cargo and repeat, upgrade your ship as you go the exploration alone will make several thousand per system even with a basic scanner.
If it's a high tech system make a note of available ships and upgrades it'll save time later when you have the cash for your Cobra/Asp/Vulture..............., all the in game ships are well balanced but the stock versions are basic, the power plant and power distributor are the most import modules so upgrade them first.

If you want to fight to earn money, get the Eagle, if trading is your thing, then its the Hauler.

I'm with the stick to sidey crowd.
Instead of spending credits on a new ship you should upgrade the parts on the one you have.
When you sell up and change ships, you lose 10% of the original asking price. But the parts will hold all their value so when changing ships you strip the parts out to retain as much of your stake as possible.

It means you can save your money by investing it in your ship rather than just watching the bank balance increase - changing ships often can end up costing you quite a bit.

The sidewinder is a handy little ship once you've A-rated it up a bit. I prefer railgun loadouts but the good thing about the sidewinder is it's versatility and ease of use; try different things with it (swapping parts doesn't cost you like swapping ships..), learn combat, stealth, power management and the range of possible loadouts.

Don't run before you can walk and all that. The longer you stick with the sidey, the better a pilot you will become - or rather the more you will know about the type of pilot you want to be; at which point you will know which ship you want next!

I own 3 ships at the moment - FdL, Python, and my trusty Sidewinder :)

Well guys, i wanted to say thanks for all the awesome info and perspectives. I started playing tonight about the time i posted this. I ended up storing my SW for later, and I bought a Hauler. Upgraded it a little and figured I would do some trading to get up enough for the Adder. Then I saw someone suggest trading rares... Looked into it and decided to give it a go... I used what little credits I had left (about 21k i think) and did a rare trading run. Scored around 85k one way and about 100k coming back. So round trip that was awesome!!! Lol...

At this point I could probably do another round trip and get a Cobra if I wanted. I have more than enough for an Adder now or a Viper. I think I am going to get the Adder and upgrade it nicely then I will be in a good position to do more rare trading or some pewing! :)

I have to say, the Hauler is very fuel efficient and has awesome jump range with the upgraded FSD. I am surprised that I didnt get interdicted at all in the hauler.. Lucky me. I learned a lot tonight and am pretty excited about seeing some new stuff to do so thanks again. Now I have to think about where to go from here ship wise :)

The Adder is great except for the cockpit view as it has a right offset pilot position meaning that the top right part of your view is hull, personally I find this really distracting check out some images before you buy.

I seem to remember missions could be quite lucrative during the early game e.g. 100k+ for a "go fetch few tonnes of gold" mission. The hauler's extra cargo space mean you take these when they come up. Get a hauler, find a good trading route and then keep an eye open for nice missions. Try basing yourslef in a high-demand system (wealthy, high population).

Eagle!

I did this yesterday: left my Vulture and new Clipper at 'home' and went 150Ly away in my Asp to a system that I liked the name of.
Bought an Eagle, painted it red, and fitted it like this: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60L,5QS5QG5QG3wU,313I4s4s2C3I3m3c,7Pc7dq7cG (power priorities set so that the KWS goes offline when a shield cell is powered)

Dropped into a RES and got lucky with the spawns the first time: Anacondas, Pythons, Clippers, and Dropships galore!
I didn't want to leave that RES, but eventually I had to, and cashed in about 3M cr of bounties after two or three hours.

The enemy ships took a lot longer to go down than if I was in a Vulture or Clipper, but the manoeuvrability of the Eagle makes it a lot of fun to fly.
Its fragile nature makes you better at avoiding enemy fire, which in a Vulture you'd just ignore and soak up with your shields, but in an Eagle you're forced to manoeuvre out of the way of.

I wouldn't take it to kill an elite Anaconda 1-on-1, just because it would take far too long, but it's a great little fighter that can fly rings around every other ship.

The Eagle with multicannons is one of the most fun ships to fly. Only, because it is small, only take on NPC pirate Sidies, Eagles, and Cobras.

Excellent choice. That's what I did as well and although I have been flying in an Asp for over a month now, I am still going back to my beloved Adder in between. It is perfect for smuggling as it doesn't get scanned easily. Have fun with the ship!

I'm in a Cobra now. It only took 2 round trips with rares, one got me in the adder and the 2nd got me in the Cobra. Lol... Really is pretty quick. Now I am doing some bounty hunting and am doing fairly well so far but just started.

Had the same choice, but held off until I could get the Adder. Much better cargo space than the Hauler if you're the trading type (as I am). Was worth it.

This adder has almost as good manoeuvrability as eagle but think it has a medium hp and two smalls. Add to that cargo and jump range is ok when upgraded. Best of both worlds.

The adder is a sweet ride that manoeuvres well and has good cargo space. It's not much of a fighter, but you can take on small fry without much fuss, and it has enough punch to stand off the reapers until you can get away. It's also dirt cheap to operate and repair. Its downside is the lousy cockpit design. I'd take an adder over a hauler no question.

The debug cam mitigates the cockpit design for screenies at least. Also; it sounds like it's powered by the souls of the damned. That's a good thing imo.

I'm a millionaire (in game) and after weeks of trading i've settled down in a system with 3 res's, I have a penchant for small combat ships. Eagle, Viper....

I love taking my Eagle out for bounty hunting....even a 100K profit if good for Eagle pilots....Stick with small game....hunt them down.

Core Dynamics are g geniuses...their ships.....and the sound it makes......

GET AN EAGLE!
