B-Class KWS Scanner is wrong

My KWS is a B-Class one I picked up from some old run down station.
On it's specification stats, it tells me that it's range is 4km.

This is a lie.
It's only 3.5km.

Now, I don't mind this in terms of my gameplay, but it should probably have it's specifications fixed to read the correct distance?
I was "minorly" disappointed when I found out it wasn't quite as good as what I paid for it. :D

I'll bet that used ship salesman told you it came from a ship that was only flown on Sundays by a little old lady, didn't he?

Pretty much all scanners well as KWS and higher than D rated are useless... Its like waste of power. For what? Each 500m for its range, its doubles energy drain. Things are really need some nerf for that drain, as it make them preety useless if someone would want have optimal bulid for its ship.

D- 0,4 = 2,5 km
C- 0,8 = 3,0 km
B- 1,6 = 3,5 km
A- 3,2 = 4,0 km

Even on Anaconda with 8A powerplant for 150 mils, wich gives 36 MW of power, using any A rate Scanner its a waste. Just sayin.

And for ingame "specification stats" dont usualy trust to them in such games like ED. Better to check and jugde by yourself to see its efects, as description might not tells all the needed infos.

Personally I find that extra 1km range incredibly useful for efficient bounty hunting. It saves me a lot of time scanning on approach so I can open fire as soon as in weapon range.
Tbh I've never rly had any power issues except maybe in my vulture.

But thats just my personal feeling on that. Wouldnt begrudge a power cost adjustment though! :D

Same here. If you can afford the power, use the good stuff.

I can afford to spare the power, so I use a B rated as well.
It's more useful than you'd think. That 1 km gives me enough time to get it scanned before I get within weapons range, or at least very close to done.

The A rated is out of proportions though.

Anyway, on topic:
Everything in ED is rounded, it's a well known issue.

Use Elite Shipyard for more accurate numbers on some things.

I have found similar with other kill warrant and cargo scanners. Advertised range was 3Km, but actual range was 2.5Km.

All of the parts are like that.
D are light and use low power, A are very expensive, use lots of power for a minimum gain.
Whats the power usage of a 5D shield vs a 5A?

Yeh, they round up.

^^^ The rounding up affects a few range things. It took me a while to realise why my KWS started to fail at weird distances, and my weapons lost lock with an E class Sensor the same way. Actually it's nice to see that the game engine isn't too quantized into "1, 1.5, 2". Trial, error and experience tell you when to boost at the edge of your range.

Using edshipyard I can answer my own question.
5D shields cost 190,000 and use 2.08 MW
5A cost 5,100,000 and use 3.64 MW

Thats for 22.5% extra shielding.

and a power.

But personally i prefer C since its in weapons range (3 km) and you can scan Wanted ship and shot at the same time.

Except on Vulture there i used D due power issues

Yup the power draw on the higher rated ones is insane. I never go above D for that reason and the initial cost. Power is tight enough on my Vulture. I find 2.5km range of the D is usually fine.

Question: does the rating of the KWS affect the bounty payout?
If yes, then I can happily live with the increased power demands. If not, then it's time to downgrade.

no, just the range you can scan them from.
The A scanners are basically for the big ships.

No just increased range hence why anything above a D (and you could make a case for anything above an E if power is very tight and you're in a fast ship) is a waste of money and power. I always equip my builds with a D rated one.

Edit: To expand on the point above, I only fly small ships as I'm relatively poor, my garage contains a well specced (mostly A) Vulture and a decent Asp, I've never flown a ship bigger or more expensive that a T7.
