Power play... quite... disappointed

No change would have made everyone happy. Even planetary landings and Thargoids would have someone complaining on the forums.

It's a needed update though.

I am disappointed with this disappointed thread. I was hoping for something much bigger. I gave up coming to the forums and I thought that this disappointed thread might bring me back, but having heard about it, I thought, no. I will speculate on the thread's disappointment and say disappointing things about it instead. Because nothing is ever good enough for me, life is one disappointment after another. I don't know why I keep having such disappointments. I went to a life coach about it, but they only said that I was manifesting the disappointment with some kind of self fulfilling prophecy. I thought that was nonsense, and so in the end even that experiment was a disappointment.

It's a step in the right direction. They have obviously listened to what the community have been saying and taken a number of things on board, giving the Factions a greater sense of identity, putting faces to names, allowing player actions to have greater and more obvious impact. Of course it's possible to read it as 'just more community goals with a pretty interface' because that's the foundation they're building on, but that's a rather pessimistic view. If anything it's reassured me a little that the lacklustre CG implementation was only a testing of a concept and a stepping stone towards more involved mechanics and gameplay.

I'm not going overboard on excitement, but to me this actually looks more interesting that I was expecting. I'll reserve judgement until we get beta access and can see what is actually involved for real.

I must say I am looking forward to it! Sounds very interesting and very engaging.

However, for this to really work, it better be as announced, in the sense that BELONGING TO A FACTION HAS TO MATTER! A LOT!

Otherwise, no motivation to fight, to "change" things if all what I am going to take from neutral to allied is a different greeting when requesting docking.

So, rewards for belonging to one or another, better be big...even if in different sense...they need to be worthwhile. Powerplay might have all this wonderful system of missions and "powers" but we need a great motivation to go through it.

That's my only concern.

Not that I really care because as it is, I could pull off a corporate conflict with labor class party rebellion, and a gruesome civil war, in an independent system, and had a blast...cause that's how I roll in my very vivid imagination. This upgrade will help me if anything...but we'll try it when back from my long exploration, like in a month or two... :)

I'm quite pleased with power play.

ED has potential, and if frontier can keep adding pack like this for the next 12 mo this or so, then it will be a monster by this time next year, not sure if that's commercially viable, but I hope so.

a lot of the complaints, and there have been a few, we focused on the lack of focus, this addresses a major gap. Games like gta have changed what we think a sandbox game should be, with lots of scripted content. Elite and the original frontier were true procedurally generated sandboxes, and I think ed, with there description of 1.3 are painting a pretty good picture of what the best of both worlds would be.

I'd say good move Mr B

From reading the newsletter, no it doesn't seem like the current community goals.
But it's free, so you get to try it for free.

Can't argue with free.

This!

Wait until it comes out, try it, and then decide.

I'm really looking forward to 1.3, but I have no idea if I'll be happy or disappointed until I actually get to play it.

Me too. Was hoping for something about smuggling

I hope they are adding some smuggling to missions.
"Smuggle drugs into opposing faction base and sell it on the bkack market"
"Smuggle guns into opposing faction base and deliver it to our friends"
"Bring biowaste to station and jettison it inside"

Caught a couple of minutes of Ed (Lewis?) on somebody's stream this afternoon. He did hint at one point that smuggling missions would be a part of the faction missions in the update. We can only hope so, smuggling really needs some love.

in my personal oppinion the idea behind this ist just great!
im a strategygameplayer by heart and i bought this game for the dream of shaping this galxy to my liking, although and maybe even more if against other players.
so im gonna find myself a lovely little system with low to no traffic and gonna build up my own little empire *mwahahaha*

For myself I think it's the patch that might bring me back.

Not experienced 1.2 yet (wings) so 1.3 (with more things to do) and what seems to be the start of giving reasons for actions.

I have been vocal about my displeasure of FD over time, but I have to say this for me is quite epic / good.

Nail on the head imo. I enjoy the game very much as it is, but it's almost too sandboxy. Perhaps I lack imagination, but I really need at least a bit of a reason for my actions. This patch is seems to be more than I even hoped for.

There are still no real details, so how anyone can make a judgment on this is like listening to politicians saying what they will do if you vote them in and then cast your vote on their promise . Proof will be in the release not a newsletter. It looks like it might be a step in the right direction but as we don't know how this will function in game and in what way , IMHO, we cant judge it yet.

Working with that theory it might be great or it may be a plumb.

been feeling a bit jaded the last week with the trade grind and the res grind and the general grind that the game can be if you need fast bucks so really hoping this will liven things up a bit. Play as an independent trader so doubt I will be joining any factions until it is proved that they actually matter, the current set up seems irrelevant..how can you hold a fed rank yet still wander around empire space and be welcomed at stations without even a mild questioning?

1.2 seem to bring very little, the wings thing doesn't really work, certainly not the nav lock and trying to stick with other ships when trading, frameshifts should be synced and your ship should be slaved to the one you are following imo and in RES combat I can kill a wing member and the others in the wing take zero notice.

Anyway, rambling a bit now so fingers crossed this update will fix some things in 1.2 as well as introduce some stuff that actually works.

I feel like I am going to be disappointed but am hopeful that I wont be.

Not really disappointed. A bit underwhelmed, perhaps, but I blame Frontier for teasing it for so long that it got built up in my head to cosmic proportions.

I would love to see a video of the new feature in action. That'd give me a better idea of it...everything in the newsletter still feels a bit cryptic about what it all really is about.

Anywho, my Elite hiatus continues until 1.3 beta drops.

i agree with the OP. Other things that have pre-emptively disappointed me:

True Detective Season 2
I won't buy Vince Vaughn's performance, honestly. The surprise cameo by Owen Wilson will be a casting error too, I don't think anyone will buy him as a prison bully. Generally, it's like they will have tried to garner some unwarranted respect from a different cop show by using the same name.

The next Soundgarden album
They will fill the album with a lot of songs that sound like Chris Cornell's solo career cast-offs. And the Jay-Z collaboration will be embarrassing at best. Menopausal women might enjoy this mawkish trash as a soundtrack to their latest hot flush, but I won't!

The Oculus Rift consumer version
The constant Facebook notifications will spoil my immersion, and the upcoming expose of the fact that subliminal messages will be getting pumped into user's brains in order to get people to consider Mark Zuckerberg less of a creep will be quite counter-productive, to say the least! At least they could flash up pictures of him that are less...naked.

My dinner tomorrow
The chicken will be rubbery, the bacon akin to a packet of Frazzles, and the pasta so overdone and waterlogged that stopping it from sliding about the plate will be like trying to keep a bloated corpse that has been floating in a river for a few weeks in one piece.
