Trying to find a good Joystick

@Rebelghost: Have you thought about using two joysticks?
You could get two Thrustmaster T.16000M's, they're great joysticks and relatively cheap and can be modified for left- and right-hand use.
I have one, which is great, but I'm thinking about buying another one.
Though to be honest I'm happy with how I'm playing my games now, which is my left hand on the keyboard and my right hand on the stick, I use keyboard throttle in most games.

I don't see how I should control throttle in this setup. If I use two sticks I can only control thrust and direction :/

How do you guys reverse with the throttle? Is '0' in the mid point in the throttle, or some other kind of switch?

The t-flight hotas x has a notch at the mid point which works great for staying behind other ships because you know the throttle position at all times and never have to look at the hud, I know the saitek can not do that as having a reverse button or no notch is not as good.

Most other people do the exact opposite. Using the full throw of the throttle, where back is 0 and forward is 100% is far more accurate. You then have a button as a reverse toggle. However, I suppose people using the HOTAS-X can't worry too much about accuracy, or they'd want to defenestrate the thing :)

Don't you have repetitive strain from boxing up saitek controllers to send back for repairs? :D

Hmm, after reading this thread I think I have even less idea of what to go for than I started reading it!

I play with mouse, but getting specialist controllers is something I did for Fighting games, where I switched from gamepad to joystick for that and never turned back.

Anyone who switched, how long does it take to adapt?

A couple of days, maybe a week.

Unless you get a saitek controller because then you'll be sending it back every other day.

Nope, neither my Saitek nor my CH stuff has broken, and neither have deadzones the size of a pregnant hippo, it's all good.

The ch deadzone is huge, especially on little joystick on the throttle, its not a good setup for fast inputs.

I've tried both the X52 and X52 pro and found both the quality and precision to be lacking.

I am now using a CH pro throttle with a T16000M joystick, and would recommend them both without hesitation.

Doing the same. The only downside is the lack of well placed buttons on the T16000 - fortunately, the CH pro Throttle has an abundance of them, making them an extremely well paired HOTAS setup...

My CH pro throttle's mini-stick dead zone is almost non-existent.

Sounds like you were very unlucky if yours was anywhere near as bad as you say.

warthog hotas

As long as money is not a problem, as its £250.

I had an X55, which I did like but gave me so many problems it went back as has been replaced by the warthog.

I also have a t.flight.x which is vey nice too for the money.

on both the warthog and X55 i use the right hat for thrusters. I use the thumb hat for yaw on the warhog which seems to work ok. i have a hat on the throttle for thrusters too 'cos sometimes if I want to control FA off and thrusters its a bit hit and miss to say the very least!!

the warthog feels like a real stick compared to the x55 feeling like a toy, which is not to say that the x55 was bad at all, it was just the buttons and the twist failing that made me send it back.

Hey everyone,

I know that there already are a lot of discussions about Joysticks in the Forum, but I already read most of them and couldn't find anything that seemed to fit what I've been searching for.
I'm looking for a joystick that has a throttle control, at least 2 coolie hats, and a primary and a secondary trigger (the secondary trigger doesn't have to be at the regular position beside the primary trigger, I actually liked that setup on the T.Flight HOTAS). It would be quite nice to have a fourth axis on the joystick to control the upper and lower thrusters. Additional buttons would be perfect.
I've already tried the HOTAS T.Flight X, but didn't like it because there was no resistance when using the throttle. HOTAS Setups just don't seem to like me.
Has anyone seen a setup to what I've just described? I just can't find anything like that (especially the 4th Axis is something I can't find as most Joysticks are made for Flight Sims/Games, not for Spacesims.)

Thanks :)

Yeah, when I was considering which direction to go I was worried about the button count on the T16000M, right up until I saw how many there were on the pro throttle.

Loving the combination!

Same setup I use - and would highly recommend. The joystick itself is just perfect In terms of weight and precision (for a space game). The buttons are lacking in quality and number, but this isn't a big issue as the ch throttle more than makes up for it. I only need to map a few non-combat functions to the base of the T16000m (gear, cargo scoop etc). I found the Saitek sticks and Warthog place some of the buttons too far away for me (big hands but short fingers). No such problem with the T16000m though.

Hah, the problem I had with the X-55 switches was distinguishing them quickly by feel with an Oculus Rift on. The most vital ones now have distinctively-shaped caps made of Sugru on them, which is a ludicrously easy thing to do- and works really well. The supercruise/hyperspace switch, and the silent running/heatsink switch in particular are now less nerve-wracking to find.

(Otherwise, I love the switches on the X-55 to death. I found the switches on the Warthog a bit restrictive, they weren't generic enough and thus hard to map satisfactorily and intuitively to ED- if that makes sense?)

Talking specifically about good value options. For a stick alone you can't beat the value of the Thrustmaster T160000M. It's not much for looks and the buttons are plasticky but you cannot beat the accuracy of those hall sensors for the price of £35. Combine it with the T-Flight Hotas using only the throttle piece and it's a great value setup with a middle detent for 0 throttle. It does means you have an extra stick sitting there, but those buttons can be mapped to other things and the only other option would be the CH Pro Throttle at 3 times the price of the whole T-Flight.

Some of these people don't understand the word "budget".

You do not need to drop $200 on your setup.. a $60 Hotas X is great for this game is you're willing to accept maybe 2 key binds on your keyboard and don't mind a plastic feel. In game, it works great.

It not that we dont understand the word Budget... it is more the case we see a person looking to get into the game using input specific gear ( Joystick/HOTAS) and we fall over ourselves trying to help the person. wanting their experience to be as good as the one we experience.

Flight with a quality HOTAS is a pure joy, even though Elite has done a superb job at making M/KB and controllers viable and competitive , their implementation of full HOTAS setups is second to none.

I have dropped more than $450.00 USD on my control setup for Elite and will expand that even further when Oculus releases their consumer version.

So allow us to have our fun offering up examples of what we consider excellent kit.
