You do know that threads like this are prone to make more people leave Open for Solo and Mobius, and might even make some people decide combat logging isn't such a bad thing, right?

Personally, at the start I saw combat logging as a cheat to be avoided, but threads like this have convinced me that combat logging is the proper answer when the opponent is attacking just for the lulz.

If you decide to go to Solo or Mobius or private, that's your choice, because you don't like fighting other players. This is completely fine in my opinion, the environment in which people like me find enjoyment is one in which I learn something in every engagement, where I die in glorious fire in some failed attempt to kill somebody that's vastly superior. You win some, you lose some. If you want to continue to exist in an environment like that, but want to still haul things, you can always organize with people, use wings, friendlists, even make a google doc or something with kos pilots on it.

If you decide that you want to stay in a hostile world environment, but want to resort to something even you yourself called a cheat in order to survive, well that's between you and your own self-image to reconcile, don't blame it on others.

I don't make a habit of preying on the helpless. Oh, there might be circumstances, possibly related to CG's or Powerplay, where I would consider interdicting traders... but it wouldn't be something I'd take any enjoyment from... I can't really find anything in it to take pleasure from.

Now, preying on those who choose to prey on the defenseless... that I do greatly enjoy.

It's no good. Though I've tried, I cant tell who is being serious, (except the posts about screen grabs), who is trying to be funny and who is just posting to wind people up.

Still, it's very entertaining. ;)

I'm not sure if it counts, but it's a gank I felt kind of bad about, though I didn't start it.

I was headed for a RES in my Cobra to stomp on a few NPCs, as I often do, when I was suddenly interdicted. Too close to the planet's rings to evade, I just submitted, only to find that my enemy was a Sidewinder. I actually panicked, thinking it must be some badass who was good enough to run PvP in a Sidewinder, but on scan, he showed up as "Mostly Harmless". He opened fire with no message, and I calmly hit him with a KWS, then took him apart.

I hope he learned a lesson about picking your fights more carefully. I would have let him go if he had tried to leave instead of opening fire.

Bwhahahah!

I would have ganked him just cuz he interdicted me, or maybe better to shoot out his jets and let him drift while you chat with him. He was probably so new that he didn't even know about 'self destruct'!! He would have floated for a while! Now that's a funny thought!

I don't like it when someone else is in my RES. I'll usually ram them and then just keep taking out the NPC's. Light bulb!!!: ram em' then hide behind the police! If they shoot, they hit the cops and are immediately wanted. That's get rid of em :)

So is there some scanner I've yet to encounter that scans the brainwaves of the player you are looking at to determine what kind of person they are? You don't know if the person hauling stuff in a type-9 is some hapless hauler or another pvper doing runs for money while his buddies are out or something. I used the type-7 example because I'm literally new and that was one of my more memorable encounters.

I usually try to be fairly nice in general, but if I think I can take someone, and they start shooting, you can bet I'll be on them as soon as I have them scanned.

If they're in a ship that's not capable of putting up a fight, then in that moment they're defenseless, and someone I would be disinclined to attack, unless I had a specific in-game motivation (CG or Powerplay, perhaps) to do so. I don't think anything I said is particularly unclear.

Even if I did have an in-game reason, I don't find killing a player who cannot effectively fight back to be enjoyable. It would be a joyless duty to carry out.

There is a partial exception for killing those I know to be pirates, or especially griefers (note that I do not equate the two). Killing them is always enjoyable even if one-sided, because it pleases my sense of justice.

In your RES? That's interesting.
My thrusters were taken out by a CMDR with a similar attitude at the nav beacon in Sol once for no other reason than he was there first. He then had the cheek to text 'stay out of Sol' as I drifted helplessly. This was pre v1.2 so I had to self destruct
Needless to say he's on my 'kill on sight' list.
It wasn't you was it?

Well usually I prefer the dumb and armed targets myself. Going after noobs isn't really kosher, not many people who are actually into pvp are interested in going after them unless they too are in something small, there's just no challenge in it. Going after experienced players however is the reason I log on.

If you decide that you want to stay in a hostile world environment, but want to resort to something even you yourself called a cheat in order to survive, well that's between you and your own self-image to reconcile, don't blame it on others.

It would be more to deprive the ganker of the satisfaction of fighting than to avoid losses. It's a matter of what I find worse, cheating or using PvP to intentionally try to ruin the game for another — and, well, the kind of malicious PvP described in threads like this one is something I consider far worse than cheating per see.

It's unlikely to ever happen to me; I never put myself in a situation where others can attack me while I'm involved in PvE. But, well, threads like this changed my opinion about combat logging; whereas some time ago I would add my voice to the ones asking for combat logging to be fixed, now I think it should be legitimized as a game mechanic, since it helps curb a kind of griefing I can never agree with.

Except that it doesn't, because it also enables actual griefers to do the same, should the tables turn against them. The harrassment is still there, even if people are no longer dying. Legitimizing a cheat is not the way to fix griefing.

I do agree with you that combat logging in open is not really in the spirit of the game.... Even if I feel your actions are lame, the simple fact is right now it (being a coward & ganking defenseless trade ships) is part of the game mechanics that is allowed and goes pretty much unpunished.

however, just be aware that this game empowers people to play away from people doing this sort of thing, and if at some point in the future you find that open is dead and empty with many players playing in private groups and only coming to open once they are tooled up with money coming out of their ears....... Please just accept that you and people like you are the reason this happened and do not be one of those people complaining that players should be locked into open or never come back into it from other groups.
