So..... is it worth it?

Hi all,

I'm really sorry to ask what is probably a silly (and already asked question) but..... is this game worth it?

I can not see a demo anywhere so I wanted to ask before I spend the £40 in purchasing it.

Watch a few videos but its the name that has brought me here. First had Elite on the Acorn Electron and then a few other versions. Also, until recently (due to lack of time) been a massive EvE fan.

Will these two previous experiences bear any semblance in this game?

What are the controls? mouse (acorn used to be WASD :)).

How long does it take to get out there and PvP?

Regards

It bears little resemblance to EVE. You can PVP pretty fast but if you want a fancy ship you've got some money-making to do (which is good, because it's practice) EVE is a lot more managerial - you click enemy ships to blow stuff up; Elite feels more like a flight simulator. Some of the simulationy elements might get on your nerves if you've short on patience.

The game still has issues but is improving quickly and has improved considerably in the 4 months that it's been out. I've been playing pretty consistently, and I quit EVE because it seemed like it was overrun with sociopaths. There are a few of those characters out in Elite-land, too, but you can avoid them if you want to.

If you can take the view that the game is not complete from many perspectives, and will remain a work in progress for probably a very long time - then it's worth every single penny.

If you need a refined, feature complete and bug-free release, I'd suggest you wait a few months, but even so - it's still worth every single penny.

Thanks guys. I'll take the plunge in that case. I got an old Saitek expensive (at the time) joystick so I'm sure it'll do.

I dont think I'm ever that good in any game to notice bugs to much :D

Still Love EvE but just can't make 2hrs a day without fail to play it and even if i can, the kids (and mrs) soon give me a problem to fix. :)

I moved to a wormhole to avoid the Jita echo around hte galaxy

THanks Guys. I lost my first reply so I'll keep this one brief.

Got an old Saitke joystick that I can dust off.

I moved into a wormhole in EvE to get away from all the crap :D still love the game but just cant give it the undisturbed attention it requires (did I mention I lived in a wormhole - no toilet breaks!).

For me it is totally worth it.

You get a very cool and unique procedurally generated simulation of our entire galaxy.
The flight model is wonderful, although perhaps not ultra realistic, but hey... it's a game.
You can customize your ships and these ships themselves look better with every patch. Every ship feels different and has it's own character.

You should realize that, although it is already great fun, the game is not finished. For me it is finished enough though to have put in more hours already than in most other games I have bought. I still get goosebumps when I see a sunrise lighting up the atmosphere of a planet, or when I travel through the sunlit ice rings of a gas giant. Soooo beautiful.
I think this is a more than worthy successor of the original Elite games. There never was a space sim like this.

If you buy the game you buy into a huge project of unprecedented scale. Consider it a journey. ED is updated and improved all the time. Core features will be added for free. There will also be payed for expansions, like planetary landings and fpa. These expansions will add entirely new dimensions to the game.

You can play the game with k&m, but I do not recommend it. Playing it with a joystick makes a world of difference and is much, much more immersive.

Absolutely, best £40 you can spend. It's the only computer game I have bought in about 5 years - I am very selective. I've been playing every day since beta.

Definitely. I've played nothing else since the start of gamma. I keep thinking I should take a break and play something else before I burn out but then I sit down at the computer and fire up Elite again, I just can't help it.

It totally depends on you. The game has no storyline as such and does very little hand-holding or guiding; this is more of a galaxy simulator.

If you're happy with that and ok to make your own path among the stars, the game is fantastic. Dangerous, even.

Be warned, it can be strongly pay to win, as in those who buy and set up a good flightstick setup tend to win more :)

Yes and no. I've got all the gear, and I'm still not a good combat pilot. I just find it makes the game more enjoyable and immersive to have lots of nice peripherals. None of them are needed of course :D

If you are finding not enough time for EVE then perhaps you will find Elite slow going if you cannot put in the hours. Although you may find yourself re-prioritising to play more if you like it. Can't tell you if you will like it, it is not a game for everyone, its not really complete but what is there is great fun for me. Better value for money in my book than an EVE sub (not knocking the game as I was a big fan for many years, but ED is a different beast).

If you cannot make a call from the videos, reviews etc you have seen and the comments here, then perhaps its not a game for you.

That game is the worst and have no potential at all, that why we got so many people playing the game and members on this forum talking about it.

Concidering you are on the game forum, it's pretty obvious most people will tell you to buy it.

I'm sure they help, but I've been perfectly happy with my basic HOKAM set-up so far.

I'll even go one further and claim that with mouse & keyboard you will perform better. But the game is also (or mainly, depends on who you ask) about immersion, and for that you can't beat a flightstick

How much do you want to pilot a Cobra MkIII again?

Funny you say that, as every single time I boost out of a station in my Cobra, I find this stupidly huge grin on my face.

Forget all my other ships... this happens only in the Cobra...

...and no, I can't explain it.
