Underwater

would it be possible for dogfights for ships underwater? imagine post-planetary expansion on a water like world where you took your ship under water and dogfight. or would you blow up if you touched water? how much water pressure could each ship take?

Moray starboat aside I had assumed that most craft would be fine between 0 and 1 atmospheres.

I think you'd need different hardpoint weapons. I doubt multi-cannons as they are now would work so well with their moving parts, and imagine the view you'd see as your lasers vapourised the water in front of you when they fired. There is also the question of increased mass with the water your ship would inevitably take on, so would that mean just sluggish behaviour when rising back into the atmosphere or would a new module be needed to flush out your ship? Imagine taking a Fed Dropship into the drink... man, that would be sluggish! [new nickname: the sea slug?]

The shields strengh would compensate for any pressure you would dive into. Remember that Stargate atlantis episode where Rodney sunk with Jumper into ocean.. basically same thing.
But i agree, some weapons would screw up with water. Like beams. Or any kinetic weapons would have their range and efectiveness lowered.
And most of all.. why underwater? isnt dogfigts in planets atmosphere not enough?

Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow springs to mind.. would be awesome. And while we're at it FD, let's have a Spitfire modelled space ship for PL's :)

Well you could hide underwater during fight :D and with some weapon not working well under water you could use it to your advantage.

Most projectiles would be a lot slower under water- torpedoes would have to be launched like a submarine! I guess mines would be no different though...

image a viper popping up from the waters to shoot down some pirate :D

I would imagine lasers would work fine. I don't know about kinetic weapons but there are some guns that can fire underwater. and torpedoes.

No doubt a starship would be able to go underwater without drowning its occupants, but I would be willing to bet that many, many components would respond poorly to submersion in water (nevermind saltwater), particularly engines and sensitive sensory modules, none of which are likely intended for that. I guess as long as your shields stayed up you'd be OK, but you'd be looking at potentially catastrophic module failure once they dropped.

That would make underwater combat very interesting.

Let's do it.

Although it occurs to me that all the air trapped in your shields would make you very buoyant.

This is a space simulator not an ocean sim.

This is an asinine argument because planetary excursions are happening, so the question of how our ships will interact with the oceans is a valid one.

I'm not sure about fighting down there but underwater hiding/exploration would be totally sweet.

im not suggesting the whole game to be about sea. i'm asking if its possible for ships to go underwater or will the devs allow it. I see nothing wrong with it wouldn't hurt anyones feelings much. I think.

They should be dead in the water/splat. Maybe.. just maybe... if you hit soft enough. Depending on cargo load you'd sink. You couldn't maneuver underwater, no controls, no thrusters, no weapons work - just sink like a rock or drop cargo to surface. Then you could launch straight up with thrusters once surfaced and try to resume flight with moderate damage taken. That is the only way I'd go for 'underwater'.
