No money for insurance -> basically delete your game

As Ironman, I scoff at insurance.

But as it's stated many many times here, and in the manual, don't fly what you can't rebuy.

If someone is dumb enough to fly without insurance it can still be topped by starting a thread debating them being stupid for flying without insurance.

The loan is already in, but IMO some people just have to fail hard to get the message.

And topped even further by a response such as this.

I'm going to assume you're being honest and actually never died until 200 hours in, despite obviously spending no time learning about the game first.

Because, in that case, I need you to help me understand the reason you played an online persistent game without at least finding out what happens when you die.

The death penalty was the first topic I looked for when I came here.

Hi,

Even though I'm mildy mad, I'll try to explain the point (I'm sure this is posted every week, at least).
To start from the beginning:
Actually I do like and love hardcore games, I do like games that make me think, that make me want to get better, that have a very steep learning curve.
I don't have a problem with dying, or dying often, or dying every damn time in a damn game, till you learn how to develop yourself.
But what the actual is this? Never did the game explain to me, that if I don't have enough money for my insurance and the 600,000 loan are not enough, my progress of hundreds of hours is gone forever.
Details might bore you, but in 200 hours and 30.000.000 credits later, it was the first time ever I got into this situation. In this ressource point with these many asteroids, I got a lag and my Clipper crashed into the big damn stone.
Instant death.
And now I have to start over with the ing Sidewinder and the bit credits I got left _again_ to grind 200 hours _a_g_a_i_n_?!
Isn't there any better solution for this?
Frontier, don't you got any alternative, instead of basically deleting everything the player has ever achieved?
Couldn't there be a hardcore mode or at least a big damn warning sign at the beginning?

You didn't read the manual?
http://hosting.zaonce.net/elite/website/assets/ELITE-DANGEROUS-GAME-MANUAL.pdf
From Page 111, Insurance Fees:

If you have no ships and not enough credits to even pay the bounty or fine you owe at the
starport or outpost you arrive at after your ship has been destroyed, you are declared bankrupt.
All debt and crimes are cleared and you are transported to your starting location where you
receive a new loaned starting ship.

Effectively, your career is reset, but note that you retain all reputation and rank gained/lost (to
clear your career completely you will need to clear your save from the main menu).

There is a warning. It tells you to buy insurance. Up to you to manage your finances in the game. Happens to us all. And we learn and move on. There's lots of warnings. For instance apart from you tube, the game, the forum, the manual, the Web site, the ship rebuy cost next to how much cash you've got and so on...

Not another i didn't bother to fly with insurance and am now suffering the consequences but it's a flaw in the game not my fault thread...!!

Oh no not again.
I can not see how you have played for 200 hours without seeing you NEED to cover insurance.

Mr forum moderator please move to "Newcomers Forum".

Doesn't the tutorial cover it? Genuine question, I've never done them since the Premium Beta, and there were less than there are now... Anyway if it was an accidental death due to server lag/game bug ticket it and explain what's happened. Frontier will investigate and hopefully return your assets (they do that sometimes I believe).
The tutorial in december did not cover death penalty, ship loss and insurance whatsoever. It also was not part of the release manual.

Welcome to the Club! :D It happened to me on my first ASP, a long, long time ago, and honestly - it was the best thing that could have happened to me at that point: I was starting to loose interest, finding the game too easy... loosing everything was a great motivation boost and I made the money for a new ASP in less time than for the first.

Nowadays, I never fly without insurance and have at least 1 backup-ship - which won't help me in the case I should crash my ship right now, as I've been out exploring for the last 7 weeks, still 12000 ly away from "home", all repair modules depleted, hull at 86% and cracks on my Windows :D I'd loose at least 50 mills - but even then I'd still enjoy the game and I wouldn't want the "punishing mechanics" to be different.

Have a safe journey - or not :D

thats the problem with the game, its so easy people dont ever die in hundreds of hours of gameplay untill they make that final mistake (and only by mistake you can die in elite) and then they are surprised cause they never had to confront with the insurance system.

its not the insurance system that is flawed, its the lack of difficulty and challenge.

I like the death penalty. There are a number of changes which imo have been made to soften the blow to newcommers since premium beta when I 1st got my wings, not all I agree with.

This I hope never softens any more than it already is BUT that being said, a "death and taxes" lesson in the tutorial section imo would not be a bad idea as well as possibly a quick check box warning before buying an upgrade / ship which is about to take you over your balance for rebuy cost.

whilst I am against nerfing the mechanics, I do not think a lesson for newbies, as well as a quick warning would be so bad.

As I just said in another similar topic...

IMO, Insurance should be pre-paid, that way, everyone knows what they're in for if they fly without(along with a 'ship uninsured, undock anyway' confirmation[that can be turned off in the ships menu])

You dont lose everything, you keep your rankings.

Flying a clipper without insurance and felt it necessary to post about how you died and it's unfair? Yes you should uninstall your game.

This will change in 1.3, if you had a Clipper you probably had fairly decent ranks, so your emergency "loan" amount would have been much larger than the default $200k that exists now.

FD realized that scaling this amount only made sense since it was utterly pointless once you moved past the "cheap" ships.

The scaled values will be nice since it will allow you to move to larger trading ships sooner and not have a huge amount of capital tied-up in insurance (currently, 4-5 million held for insurance on a T9 means a lot more grinding in lower-level ships before you can afford to fill the cargo hold!) That being said, if you "go negative" it may take a while to dig yourself out of that hole, but I think they just take a percentage each time...
