Thargoids have a long history in Elite. I wonder why they seem to be back to "unknown" instead of "just not around" - any lore about this?

Michael, just answer me one little question. I'm 50 odd thousand LY from Sol. Is there any possibility that I might bump into something non celestial this far out? Just a simple yes or no would satisfy me.
TBH: what difference would it make gameplay-wise whether they're green or blue? If Wing commander had had Klingons instead of Kilrathi, it wouldn't have been any different.
