Mac Players!! incoming!!

Just wanted to say a warm welcome to the 106 new mac players we will be getting :D!!

Now that's out the way lets hope they can turn their leading sights to powerplay.

Snap. Didn't know there were actually people seriously trying to game on macs, let alone that many here. Oh well, good for them I guess.

I'm looking forward to logging in with my Mac tonight.

I hope the performance matches that of running under bootcamp, but experience with other games makes me thing this is unlikely - however going to give it a good go :)

Kind of a worry that running the mac version natively would be slower than running the PC version under an emulator. I've used macs a few times and I really don't get why people like them (and I'm an ex amiga user, so I'm not that fond of windoze in the first place and certainly no fanboi) but I'm sure you have your reasons.

Good luck to you with it, regardless. :)

[edit] Just googled bootcamp and found out it's not actually an emulator but a boot selector. Still don't understand why you'd want a machine that would run faster under a foreign OS than a native one, but oh well. It's a free world. :)

I really curious to see how this might affect the backer numbers since I have been keeping track for many weeks now. Don't expect a huge bump, but it will be interesting to see what affect the release has nevertheless.

I hate to think to how much the "minimum requirements" cost to buy in a Mac. I just hope the its worth it for the devs.

The mac players where playing anyway on emulated windows?

They could of done powerplay first and broadcasted it on steam = sales and while everyone was happily "powerplaying" worked on and bought out the Mac version.

o well lets hope the next 2 - 3 weeks fly by!

I doubt we'll really see a notable increase, since it's likely that most of the mac players (like Cmdr Phyl) have been playing the PC version in one way or another. Same as when they release it on xbox... the early adopters of the xbox version will be mostly pc players who have an old pc with a small monitor, and a new xbox with a big tv (though later xbox players will just be straight xboxers I'm sure).

At least now that the mac beta's out of the way (and once the obligatory first 5 bug fixing patches have come out) they can start on the V1.3 beta (for both platforms). I wonder if the betas will go for longer now that they have to release parallel versions?

It's absolutely worth it for the devs since now their Cobra engine has been upgraded so that it can easily port games over to Mac/OpenGL. This will benefit every other project they are working on in their studio...like their upcoming Tycoon game which most certainly will be available on Mac too.

Anyway...doing a Mac release was promised during the Kickstarter (probably with the benefit above taken into account) so they need to get it out there anyway.

The original plan was probably to launch Powerplay together with the Mac version since they wrote this back in Newsletter 73:

...Powerplay is a FREE content update for all Elite: Dangerous players and will be part of Elite: Dangerous for Mac and Xbox One at launch.

Well...it's not part of the Mac release at launch so that means that some features of Powerplay probably needed some more polish, but at the same time they felt that the Mac version was good to go. Why hold it back then? Getting it out today means more sales before the end of the financial year (May 31st). This is also why we will definitively get the official release of Powerplay before the end of the month...unless the Beta is a complete disaster.

My eldest godson bought ED a few weeks ago, and then found it wasn't (yet) available for the Mac. I told him to hang on, they were working on the Mac version. When the #74 newsletter gave the Mac launch date I passed it on, so I expect that he will be downloading it when he gets home this evening.

Yep ... i'm another hopfullly ex-bootcamper.... Not been having much luck with that for some reason ... but expecting a small performance drop with OSX sub-standard nVidia drivers

Really it comes down to the performance of OpenGL vs Direct3D. Direct3D seems to perform better (and look better a lot of the time), but is Windows only.

Why a mac? I need both mac and windows as I have software that will only run on one or the other. I can happily run windows on a mac, but can't easily run OSX on a PC, so the decision is made for me! I also prefer linux/unix over windows as my day-to-day OS and OSX gives me that as it is a certified Unix OS.

At the end of the day it's just about what is easiest for me!

This reminds me of the times when my Amiga 4000 with 060 CPU and Cybervision display adapter ran Marathon faster while emulating Mac OS 7 with ShapeShifter than an original Mac. But I kind of liked Macs back then, just hated the fact that they had no multitasking and Amiga had it since 1985. Well Windows also needed 10 years for that.

I could see a lot more people playing from work. All those fancy graphic designers and there 27inch screens. My girlfriend is getting a 27inch mac. I already told her im installing Elite on it :D :D. Plus we know people with macs for computers dont actually work all that much, being so efficient with their macs and all.
