Good luck on your expedition and congrats on getting away from the ship grind. Once you figure out that you're not a slave to the grind, it opens up all kinds of possibilities for enjoying the game. When you come back, work on building rep with some local factions. Find a system where two or more factions are going at each other, read the descriptions and pick a side. Start running missions to help "your" faction and to thwart the others. You'll be surprised at how the "boring" bulletin board missions take on a new flavor when you're doing it to help your system. You start running cargo not based on profit/ton, but how well it assists in your goals. Enjoy the animosity of becoming hostile with a faction and the difference of seeing red and green contacts on your scope. That's with the existing game mechanics, no less. The 1.3 patch is rumored to add even more.
I also get a lot of enjoyment out of knowing my "neighborhood" and telling visitors where to go for commodities, where the close stations are, good spots for pirate hunting, etc. I've met quite a few friendly commanders out there, and once you get into the habit of using the local comms, the longer trips to more distant stations become an excuse for friendly chit chat.
Trying to zoom up the ladder as fast as possible is the fast track to burnout. Glad you found a way to keep that from happening to you!
