I love this game! (but I'm bored...)

OP I'm in a similar spot to you. Been playing about 6 days a week since 1.0 (though usually for only an hour or two). Almost got to the point of addiction. But the last couple of weeks I've found myself not too bothered about playing. And yet I have not really done much in the way of grinding, just BH with a bit of trading to buy new ships and upgrades. So I haven't really "progressed" much and that's fine, it means I still have a lot of things to try. Below is my "to do" list, in case it gives you ideas. You may have done most/all these things already and some people will be surprised at the things I haven't done yet:-

try rares trading
do more smuggling
do some "proper" exploring
try mining
become good at flying FA off
do a CG
see empire vs fed cap ships fighting (does this even happen?)
get Sol and other permits
any mission types I've not done yet?
try limpits again (not sure I got them to work properly haha)
visit Jacques station
find Voyager
visit centre/far side of galaxy
see black hole
own all ships
try weapons I've not tried yet
take some nice screenies
get a rank/become allied with a major faction
get to all 3 Elite ranks :)

So what do you CMDRs reckon? I'm not ready to retire yet!
Thanks everyone

A big thing under everyone's nose that is easy to ignore but that I keep finding surprisingly fun and satisfying, is to spend more time playing the meta-games.

Do you have a Pilot's Log book? If no, consider making one and start using it, so all your notes are in a fitting place. (Time spent building Elite stuff for your cockpit is time playing Elite :) )
Spend less time in the cockpit and more time reading the forums and chatting with other CMDRs!
Do you have Nutter's Guide? If not, consider adding it to your cockpit.
Did you mount an expedition for the Unknown Artifact when the world was trying to find one? If not, was that because it doesn't really appeal to you to try to discover things, or was it because you didn't hear enough about it? (Because you were grinding instead?)
Join the racers?
Papercraft ship models?
etc. :)

There is only one real fix.

Oculus DK2.

Where before you were playing a game sitting in front of you on a black rectangle... you are now INSIDE the game.

ATM, Elite is boring, yes I get it.

As for me, I wanna explore. There is an almost unlimited space to discover (which is good) but, as you already know, not enough stuff to find. Well, I wait for updates.

Meanwhile, I'm (slowly) going for an Elite rank in exploration. Sure, this is not exciting : I do that while watching TV shows, mindlessly exploring systems. Getting XP. And hoping this will change eventually. Damn, they are so close (they = frontier) to do it : I mean, give explorers a few opportunities, a few hazards, a few fights, a few aliens to contact and it's done. Later (much later), give us planetary landing and there you go, I won't need another game during the next *decade*.

So here I am ... Waiting ... Hoping ... Grinding ...
Not sure this helps but this is how "I do it".

IF you have any interest in pvp I'd suggest picking up a throw away ship like say a viper and head for the old worlds and try to take on the pirates and rammers at George Lucas Station. I hadn't lost a ship in combat until I started dealing with those guys. It serves as a short burst of excitement for a bit. If your bolder or skilled enough to take the risk you could take a bigger ship. Python or something if you like. Why complain about "griefers" if you can have fun killing em I'd say.

If that's not your thing then turning control of a system is a good way to keep you busy, especially along the frontier worlds. Powerplay should make things interesting soon though if you can hold out a few weeks

Exactly.

For a game with nothing in it (!)
I'm rapidly overtaking the hours I put into two complete runs on Fallout 3!

Jump into a Community Goal in Open, and link up with other players. It's awesome. Head to where the sign up station and broadcast on the Local channel. Just chat with other CMDRs or wing up to do some trading or Bounty Hunting or whatever. I've had some of the most fun in any game in recent memory running escort missions for live pilots. It's also good for a warm fuzzy helping out the new guys. Player pirates are out there, but again most of them seem to be playing it straight. Give up some cargo and live, or defend your ship and your honor. Sure you're gonna run into the jerks out to spoil peoples' fun but they're far outnumbered by people who want to play the game. Once you get over the fear of losing virtual money (remember always fly with insurance) it turns into an entirely different game.

Of course, if you're really bored and desperate for a challenge, click on the bumper sticker below...

Looking for suggestions please!
Bounty hunting at RES's isn't doing it for me anymore.
I've got Pathfinder in exploration and don't fancy going out again until there's more 'stuff' added to see out there.
I've traded for a fair while in different ships and the appeal is gone there for me too.
Grinding my way to an Anaconda makes me shudder...

I've been ranking up but got caught a couple of times by bugged missions, so I've been holding out for PowerPlay - but now it's delayed!

I'd really recommend taking a break. I did so a while ago when i felt bored. Now i'm loving the game again. So yeah nothing wrong with a bit of time out now and again.

I'm in the same boat. Love it but bored at the moment. Been enjoying RES combat but am finding myself logging in, looking around and then exiting. The other day I bought an Asp, kitted it out for exploration - made it through the letter box and lost my resolve (and remembered that I truly dislike the engine sound and the cockpit - prefer the cobra) - so turned around and sold it.

In the last week have played X-Com, Supreme Commander, Civ 5 and Sins of a Solar Empire. Was trying to hang in for PP next week but now thinking about Witcher 3 . . . Been getting some impressive reviews :)

There are some good suggestions here. The only point I'd want to make is in relation to the first reply and others similar: you can take a break.

People have this idea that once you find a game a bit same-y, it's all over. Once you quit, that game's done.

It really isn't, and I honestly don't understand this view. I've put games down and come back to them years later. The game doesn't fail if it doesn't hold our interest forever without interruption.

You could help me find my shoe. It's floating around in space somewhere tanaka near terminal. ..... I miss my shoe !

I just get on a few hours a day now. I trade, fight..whatever I feel like to get money. Hopefully I'll have a good enough bank account when stuff I actually want is added to the game. Drone mining seems.. interesting. IMO there's nothing really too exciting to do in the game yet. The galaxy is lifeless and empty (beautiful, sure but.. come on.. it's like exploring our own solar system hoping to find life, and just NOT finding it). The most exciting thing right now are the unknown artifacts. Everything else is just ridiculously repetitive, especially trading. I've been wanting a DK2 for a while, but now since the actual consumer version of oculus rift will be released early next year.. guess I gotta wait for that too. Wish the computer would talk to us while we were exploring and tell us interesting things about the system we were in, or about the age of a possible relic from a civilization was... or SOMETHING. Would be fun to have our ship "actively scanning" the system while we relax and admire it, or read about it on the galaxy map, or read the latest galnet news.

The main thing I'm looking forward to is planetary landings, walking around ships. I don't know, just FEELING like you're really out there. Right now the game is too similar to EVE and the X series.. just staying in space constantly and trading/upgrading, etc. Once they add landngs, it will be wonderful. I just hope No Man's Sky doesn't outdo Elite in that regard.

Find a group of players to join with and work toward a common aim. Makes a huge difference. Simple grinding suddenly seems like you are part of something bigger.

This. If you don´t you are missing more than half the experience. Unless you like to play a lone wolf character, but even so you should consider to support the faction of your choice through community goals or other ways at some point
