Combat Elite

I already know what you need to get elite in trade and exploration, but I don't know what you need for combat elite. Does anyone here know a close number I would need, and what the fastest way to get there would be.

I ranked combat fastest when going between a RES and CZ's in the same system, in a vulture.

I believe you need in excess of 10,000 bounties claimed at least, but not sure, plus a few thousand combat bonds. The numbers used to determine combat ranks seem rather complicated and inconsistent, or at least poorly documented, in my opinion.

It varies widely and since no one really knows the algorithm it's even harder to nail down.
Not only that but counting bounty vouchers can be a wild card because when you KWS scan someone you can get one or 5 vouchers for one kill.
i got elite at 11,590 but there have been ones higher and lower than that. 9600 has been the lowest I've seen, I've also seen over 12.8

Combat rank is based on the rank of targets killed relative to your own rank so numbers are not very useful.
when I hit elite I had about 2.5k in bounty kills random ranks. 500 cz kills random ranks and 4500 cz kills only dangerous and above.

So somewhere between 7.5k and 8k kills to hit elite when i started farming dangerous and up ranked enemies when i hit dangerous.
Cheers

I finally got Elite combat ranking on 20th of April, after days of frustrating fighting in conflict zones convinced that it was just a few more kills... Almost went crazy.

What this tells me is that Bounty Hunting while profitable (mostly) doesn't help your elite status at all. I have 7,503 bounties and the rest are CZ kills.

Is that really the way it's supposed to be?

It also depends on the ship you are flying. If you are in a battle hardened Anaconda it will take a lot longer than if you were in a decent Cobra.

I don't think ship makes any difference. I think it is your rank versus your opponent's rank. So killing Elite ships will rank you up faster than harmless kills.

only the devs know, but frankly ship class should be counted into the formula as elite conda is a lot tougher opponent than elite sidewinder.

It is just about rank. If you hunt mostly harmless cmdr than it indeed would nit help much. CZ has high number of ranking opponents. Dont forget you dont need to gain anything, I got master rank for just ranomly executing sysauth ships from the Empire. :)

Nope; keep the algorithm in a 'black box'. Live in the game and learn; we don't all have to be 'Elite' in a months time.

It took 4 months for me, but that is not the point. I think it would have been much more enjoyable if it was possible to understand how much more "proof" of your deadliness the Pilots Federation need before next rank. Sure don't make it about XP if that is what you are worried about, but then rather have a contact you can enquire at stations. The contact could give a response that gives a clue about your progress, like "You're making progress", "You're halfway there", "You are almost ready for next rank" etc.

Instead of giving us the full algorithm, it would help comparability, if we had a real kill counter in the stats panel, not the Bounty/Bond counters.
There was a kill counter in beta and in some of the previous games, afaik.

Even in the books, considered official lore, at least in one story, the CMDR knows, that only one more kill is needed for Elite status.

1. Keep the algorithm hidden. Even though I'm pretty frustrated about the whole thing... I do think it's more important to keep that a secret. What I would like however is something from FD that says "Yea BH kills are worth 'less' than CZ kills" if that truly is the case.

2. I only fire on ship that are larger than me. I don't shake down harmless eagles... heck unless it's an Anaconda, Clipper, Python, Vulture, Dropship or Asp - I generally don't waste my time. (I'm in a Vulture btw) I've followed this methodology since around the 7k kills mark. Unless something attacks me first... I generally won't shake down a smaller ship.

3. From 90% of the posts I've seen where folks claim Elite combat status... they did it in CZs with about ~9k killls. It's not that the opponents are higher ranked; they are more plentiful.

The bottom line as far as I see it is this: If you're just aiming at Elite Status don't bounty hunt.
