You are correct, only in the CIG sponsored PU. Star Citizen is going to provide every one the ability to host there own isolated private servers! These private servers will have all the hooks and handles to completely modify the individuals privately hosted servers. Additionally these private servers are not limited in membership count. I'm certain there will be many of these, and many PVE privately hosted servers. I'm an early backer over there, been there since the beginning. I funded this endevor to a tune of several thousand dollars just for this option. I already host 2 servers, a Day-Z server, which is very successful, and a Firefall sever that's also doing well. I will in fact be hosting a Star Citizen Server, or 2, and one will most certainly be a PVE server.

So to say a PVE server will not exist is simply untrue.

PS Chris Roberts did the same thing with "Freelancer". The official Freelancer server is gone, In fact the only way you can play Freelancer these days is to join a Private Freelancer Server, and there are more than just a few.

So people will run there own private server and live away from the PU....they are not playing the same game with those in the PU...and with mods available, the game will, likely be very different than the PU.

So, the way I see it, is you can play the game as CIG wants it to be played or the way you want it to be played. However, only the PU players are playing the 'sanctioned' game.

It's the exact same game, its content upgrades will simply be 6 - 8 months behind the PU, for obvious reasons. Don't take my word for it mate, go to there forum, and search for "Private Server", and "Modding". Do a little research.:D

I could post a whole bunch of stuff regarding it, but this isn't the SC forums. It would be in bad taste.

27 million for top 5% PTFP?
I thought maybe 15 or so. Credits just getting thrown around. Maybe I will by 10 couriers?

If after a few weeks of powerplay nothing has changed with mode switching or incentives for Open play and/or an Open only server isn't announced I will be looking at other gaming options.

Cool, I hope you stay but if not please pop back to tell us how much fun your new game is, I might take a look if you post a link, I am a bit too busy enjoying ED to look right now.

If you do leave please ensure you post a new "I quit thread" and make sure you use capitals, I would hate to miss it, I like to say goodbye and thank people for their donations, its only fair after they added to the funds to make the game better for the rest of us.
 
SC will have instancing similar to E: D...32 players per instance, however, instances are supposed to 'see into' and 'shoot across' each other (think bubbles close to each other that you can see into and shoot into). It will also be server based and not Peer to Peer. They will have a PvP slider that will not prevent all PvP, but set your matchmaking to very low possibilities. There is no PvE.


Funny no one ever seems to remember the private servers that Star Citizen is promoting.To say there will be no PVE private servers in Star Citizen is not really reality.

How do the private servers work in SC? are they totally player owned and people pay a sub to the owner, can you move from private to public if you don't like private?

I looked at SC around the same time I found out about ED, the spec for my new, but very much budget PC was "must be able to run ED and SC".

Might have to buy a cheap SC ship to take a look at some point although I might wait until launch.

It will be the same as Freelancer (I loved that game - was my first real space game)
Local host, but they are behind any updates the main game has.

So, in theory, one could be set up with the same rules as Mobius has here ;)

Yea, my fault - I started it this time.
But I think it is good to have comparisons like this, those unhappy with ED should not feel like there is nothing for them, when there is.
Plus I have a friend who has both, so its quite fun to see where they are the same and where they are not ;)

Yes they are privately owned. Anyone can host one. If your doing it on your own computer you will be limited mostly by your band with, not so much the PC, although better is always better. I'm not completely in the know on there particular requirements but any should be able to do one, even if you have to rent an online server account with one of the many providers.

The game has all the necessary hooks and handles to highly modify it if you like. Special player created ships, disabling friendly fire, etc.. It's completely modifiable to your preferences.

I completely expect Elite to provide some of these mods at a later date for there groups. But who knows, it's there game, and I'm a loyal customer to these guys.

As a relative newcomer to E: D, this thread has made interesting reading. Seems that the basic contention is the age-old conflict between PvP and PvE oriented players:

PvP guy: I demand that I am able to kill you, or else you can't play the real game.
PvE guy: Screw you! I should be able to play the full game in my immune-to-PvP mode.

(Insert further layers of motive obfuscation and rationalisation.)

As a slightly older gamer who's been around for a while (through original Elite and Frontier, as I see many here have!) I've seen the same argument play out over many different forums, beginning most notably with the Ultima Online Usenet group in the late 90s. The "hawks" want the "doves" to have to play with them (and be killed by them), while the doves want nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately for the hawks, the trend since (and even during) Ultima Online has been to favour the doves, and I don't see this changing. The reason is pretty simple - in an RPG (and what all of these games have in common is that they are RPGs to some degree), no-one's idea of the role they want to play is another player's helpless victim.

I actually don't mind being someone's helpless victim in Elite. What I don't want to be is someone's helpless victim in Unreal World of Spaceships Tournament Arena of Duty.

I am playing Elite, too many in open are playing pew pew pew. When that changes I'll go back, not before. Strangely very few of the open advocates talk about that in this thread.
