Why Powering Carge hatch

I cant figure out why we should power cargo hatch.

Iam flying around with 216 tons of cargo in a Lakon type 7.
No power to Cargo hatch and that works without any problems.

If pirates will steal my cargo they need a Hatch breaker, that works only when shields are down.
Cargo hatch being powered or not plays no part.

So why should we power the cargo hatch at all?

Because it's a power drain to stop your ship's power plant from overloading. You think you have saved yourself power, you have instead sealed your doom.

Really? Never had that problem.

Iam usually above 100% in "total" power consumption, so i need to have something turned off.

I leave the cargo hatch powered off most of the time, as I usually don't fly with the best power plant to get more jump distance. Saves me the juice to power other stuff.

Since the cargo hatch is required to jettison cargo, as has been mentioned, turning it off also means you can't accidentally jettison everything. ;)

I was making a joke. as said by FalconFly and ozrix84 you only need it on to scoop.

You should be allowed to buy energy efficient scoops that require a turning wheel so you can manually lower/raise the scoop at no cost to power. :D

WIN WIN :)

Thanks for the clarification.

Been exploring and trading so i havent scooped or jettisoned anything yet.

Is this true? If so that's ridiculous! This really needs fixing if it's true.

The breakers reprogram the cargo hatch to open it. The opening still needs energy. Hatch breaker against humans have terrible success rates (20%-) compared to AI (80%+). Guess AI has it powered all the time.
However, if the hatch is unpowered and someone blows it to 0% then you will drop more or all cargo. So I was told, never actaully tested.

Does a cargo hatch need to be powered in order to malfunction? I haven't suffered it for a while but it always seems to be the first thing to malfunction when taking heat damage and instantly vents my hold into space. If it doesn't malfunction without power, I'd never turn the thing on!

This also means you can't intentionally jettison cargo either. Like if a pirate says "drop 20 tons or youre dead, you have 10 secs". He's not going to wait around for 20 secs while you fiddle around with your cargo hatch to get it working again.

I don't see why not. Does he have ADD or something? Waiting 20 seconds won't kill you.

It sounds like you're still playing in Open. Haven't heard of Möbius yet have you?

During my BBRA*, my power distributor malfunctioned while turned off. Interpret that as you will.
