Steam keys for all of us...

why was this a big deal?
I personally don't care, but if this was an issue for others, great. Congrats.

ENTITLEMENT!

Seriously, it always would have been good for Frontier, for the game, and for it's community, but there's a very vocal minority of posters who associate with the gaming industry to such an unhealthy degree that they would rather the whole industry's standards decay than accept their fellow consumers might have a point... They took a side where there didn't have to be sides, and decided anything which benefited a business they loved must be good overall and anyone resisting it was evil.

The whole Free To Play part of the industry is driven by those who think being able to pay literally tens of thousands of dollars for less content than they would have got from a Buy To Own product is acceptable because of that same mindset. You should see it as an honor to spend so much, no one has to give you what was once given... The Steam Key debacle here was driven by the same mindset, one that was outraged people were asking for better value for money, even on something as small as unlocking their product on Steam. Even that tiny amount of customer support led to cries of "entitlement", and a number of posters (mostly on ignore for me now) going far, far too deep into the self dug moral hole. And then being shocked and disgusted when Frontier did what was clearly the decent thing after all.

Looking forward to linking my Steam account to here... Thanks Frontier!

From reading your reply I can only imagine to identify as a gamergater - quite frankly I'd be happy to be on your ignore list.

It was never a big deal, people were just loud about it.

For new users, Steam may be just another DRM, but some of us have been using it since the Counter-Strike 1.6 days and have build many communities/friends in that platform it is very convenient to have it there, since we'll all be using it anyway.

Steam doesn't have many advantages for new users, but old users like me sometimes have some benefits (I bought 2 games for "free" recently just selling bonuses/drops from other games I already own)

Couldn't have put it better myself! (+rep)

So if i get this correctly.
If i want to support this game development i should not get a steam key , as just by doing this , i am allowing steam to get 30% of sale's for nothing.

Unless Frontier are only paying for the keys as they are adopted; they will already have payed Steam the money so using the key takes nothing from Frontier.

I highly doubt they will sell any of the merchandise or skins and decals through steam so unless you are buying the game from fresh; frontier will lose nothing through you personally getting the key.

Do we know if Steam will have asked for any money for providing keys to gamers who have already bguth the game? if they got them for free; Frontier can only benefit from this. :)

Or you could just buy any future expansions via the FD store .... steam would earn nothing from that and you can still use steam to launch the launcher and use the overlay for screen shots and browsing etc etc

I just don't get why there is even a conversation about steam being bad for the game in any way...

Well some people are afraid that new players might almost exclusively come from Steam, with a part of the money going to Valve, as opposed to former players who used FD store, with 100% of the money going to FD.
Personally I am glad I will be able to launch my game through Steam but I will still make sure to make purchases on FD store, so that more money goes into development. Problem solved :)

I am still waiting on someone from FD to tell us if it costs them anything for someone claiming a Steam key if they originally brought the game from FD. if so I don't want it.

Great stuff!

If nothing else, having more representative number on here are a reason alone:

http://steamcharts.com/app/359320

Those numbers are starting to get mightly low, but then that could be due to the beta?

First thing I did was leave a positive review and drop 10hr's into the bucket.

Steam doesn't charge for keys. They even worked out some agreement with Steam clearly, because when you approve the key it's not a steam game like other steam games, when you launch it, it still launches the other original launcher for you to login through, you can just take pics to steam and get your hours logged.

So do Steam keys cost FD anything?
If so, I don't want one.
I would rather the money went into game development rather than making life a tiny bit easier for me on my computer.

I'm a longtime Steam user.
I just can't see how it will change my Elite : Danegrous experience.

If you had an answer already, I apologise.

But the key doesn't cost FD anything.
However any future in game expansions of content, even if bought through the FD store, will see 30% of your purchase price go to Valve.
Just as it would if you bought extra content through steam.

I will not be generating a steam key for exactly that reason. I want 100% of my purchase funding to go into FD and not have any of that go to valve. The benefit of a steam key to me is really not outweighed by this cost.

Got my steam key :) As a heavy Steam user its very nice of FD to do this, not essential by any means as was quite happy using the launcher but is very nice.

From the many posts....wow Valve remind me of many companies before ie Microsoft, apple, google that when they started out they were loved and provided a great many products and services but got haters over time cos well they are very successful and make money...how dare they. My view is if you make good products and provide good services for good value then it's all good. The great thing is everyone is different and everyone has great choice and these days there is a lot of choice! Different PCs, Operating systems, game clients, game shops etc.

It's the entitlement thing and closed mindedness i don't get...so some use steam some don't that's great so lets just enjoy the game.

I'm a heavy Steam user (especially Big Picture mode after recovering from an op!) and I also think it's a great way of having a platform for PC games that can compete with consoles, reduce fragmentation and encourage indie development. Even if the 30% to Steam is hard to swallow, it's par for the course today (think Apple's app store). and I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Personally I will claim a Steam key and buy 30% more in the future! ;)

I can't find it. Where do is the "parther key" button on the dashboard?

I didn't see it at first when using Mozilla. I logged in the account with Chrome and then I saw it. No idea why I couldn't see it in one, but was there in the other. (Its on the left side with all the other options)
