4 Months

Dayum! Man, I already know if lose the soon to be 2 weeks I've been out there it'd be preeeeetty bad. I can't even imagine 4 months!. I don't know what I'd do. So yeah, I feel ya CMDR. Naturally you'd want to take a break after putting so much effort into it and getting nothing in return in the end. Hopefully you'll be able to find the courage to return one day.

4 months of play gone.

I took a picture, I alt-tabbed to rename the file. I alt-tabbed back in. Somehow I turned on silent running. I died before I found the key to turn it off.

4 months I've been out.

I'm going to play something else for a while.

Awww man, right in the feels!
I was only out 5 weeks and would have felt destroyed if I'd lost that data.
4 months!!!
Utterly devastated for you.

Very sorry to hear this.

I can recommend the Carma remake for a mindless nostalgia trip - it's just the same appallingly politically incorrect game as it ever was, only 21st century-ised. It was shaky in Early Access but they've ironed (most of) the bugs out.
And Cogmind is cool if you're into roguelikes.

Hope to see you back though. Your help is much appreciated.

I am totally gutted for you as I was sweating loads coming in with only 6 weeks of data, so sorry for you Cmdr :( o7

Sucks man!

I had a similar near mishap with silent running about two months in. It's no longer on my delete key!

Ouch iain, I am sooo soooo sooooo sorry to hear this terrible news!!!

Truly sorry man...ugh..

There is no words....take a break...we'll miss you but oh boy...

I don't even know if I would come back after such a blow...this is the hardest hit I've heard of... ever...

Hope you find the strength to come back friend..

It's all about key bindings, though default silent running is the "delete" key so I am unsure how this would happen. Maybe I have been lucky because I press the "windows" key when I want to switch to the desktop which nothing is bound to. Maybe that is what has saved me from a similar outcome. It may be possible that when you alt tab, the game does not recognize that the keyboard inputs are now off, where using the windows screen it does. Sounds buggish to me to be honest. Worth testing and something that FD might need to look into. I will present it to my fellow Mercs and we will test it and submit our findings.

Ouch. I think most of us know the feeling. I was up to an asp when I found out (the hard way) about the insurance limits. Don't wonder to far. power play sound like a real mind blower.

Thank you all for your sympathy. I'm going to go and play South Park: The Stick Of Truth since it's been sitting unplayed since I grabbed in a Steam sale on boxing day.

Already half planning my next trip though, so I'll be back in a couple of weeks :)
This time, do not Alt-Tab. Or at least make sure the silent running binding is on your stick or as some really obscure kb-combo (like Left CTRL - Right SHIFT - 5).

I'm terribli sorry for you Iain. Strange thing is that it was happening the same to me last week. For RP reasons I always go out from super cruise before logging out, and I got this message "are you sure to log out with your ship in danger?" Or something similar, and then noticed my ship was in silent running mode at 90% heat.

for sure was my mistake, now I unbinded that command.

Sorry to hear, currently also running with this function completely unbound since my cat has this idea that sitting on the keyboard is a brilliant idea and had more than one close call because of it..

If I where to start smuggling I would bind it up to my hotas as a hold function not toggle.

Wow, that's a bummer. It's pretty bad that this can even happen. A black box or maybe sending data probes back to home systems so that we can save survey data while still out in the dark seems like a reasonable thing to do.

I wouldn't mind if it was added BUT at the same time I am always up for some degree of risk, even with dire circumstances. But then, I was just fine with the old 200,000 loan limit for insurance, as well.

Ouch...that hurts.

My sincerest condolences.

If you do any role playing at all it might help somewhat to use something like this as a major plot element in your character's life.

Just imagine your character waking up at the Remlok facility with no memory of what happened in the last 4 months since the last "snapshot" was taken of your neural network except some log fragments that you sent back during the journey (if you keep a log that is, and I'm sure a lot of us explorer's keep some kind of record of interesting systems).

You could use those fragments of information to retrace your journey to find the last system your "predecessor" was in to recover the ship's telemetry data to find out what happened.

I did a similar thing when I died after the dreaded "lose connection in a ring system only to re-connected inside an asteroid" thing. I only lost 2 weeks worth of data, not even a drop in the bucket in the same ballpark as losing 4 months worth, but the "mission" my character had to find out what happened turned out to be rewarding, and I got to add quite a lot to my character's story along the way, and in the end it made for a richer gaming experience.

I know that role playing isn't for everyone and I do indeed fully understand the desire to put the game aside for a while and do something else after such a loss, but it's something to consider and mull over while you take a break.

Try to put a positive spin to it.
