Why do you play ED?

i play because EVE has been nerfed and now all ships i fly are crap or redundant, this is a better version with more space and more freedom and the upcoming power play is awesome, content its content what this game really needs is player to player immersion and thats what powerplay will give us.

SC fans hate to be that guy but you still got 5 yrs before SC comes out i feel it is just a con. 2 yrs ive been watching waiting for something to open up but cant even get the solo version out.

I very much play at my own speed in my own world. I give myself goals. Right now I'm trying to get my first million credits. With that money I'm going to turn my Viper into a speedy smuggling ship to salvage the system I'm based in. Once I have that ship and I start my smuggling routine, I'll give myself more goals - Maybe by accepting all missions for illegal / stolen cargo and work my towards my second, third and fourth million via the sneaky black markets.

All the Pythons, Anacondas and Vultures I see I give a wide birth to. Maybe one day I'll own one of those ships I tell myself. Right now, I'm just trying to make a quick buck and give myself an adrenaline rush flying my super sharp Viper around my current system. The less I am seen or heard by the rest of the pilots out there, the better. At least... for now...

I dont play anymore, for many reasons, but Im still here in the forum reading and watching closely the updates to see if the game goes in a new improved path that let me enjoy it again, so much potential in this game.

But I dont think so, maybe in a year or so the game will evolve and I will be back, but I dont know... I hope so, totally loved the first 50+ hours of play, after that I didnt find anything interesting, just more of the same over and over again, maybe after a year the game will be like new for me again.

Because its going to (and allready has) have a bigger and better scope than SC , its got good lore and dosent pander to the casual audience.

Because there is a lot of time spent just flying, its perfect to have something to do while reading. So I play the game while studying mostly. Of course, I spend most of my time trading and exploring, because of that.

Short version: Because it's Elite.

Longer version: I funded ED through Kickstarter 18 months ago or so because I played Elite and Frontier to death in my teens and twenties, and Oolite in my thirties and early forties, and believed that a 21st Century game in that style would be awesome. Every time I launch, every time I make a profit, every time I take a bounty and every time I land with a hold full of carefully carried rares I smile. ED is a unique game that makes you a part of it, and the people who are a part of it make the game. It's nothing like a 7th sequel from Ubisoft or a distraction from King. It's immense, passionate and crafted. I love it.

You're a natural optimistic, I see :)

However, my reason is not that vastly different. I've been waiting for a space sim since FreeSpace 2. ED is the only good one on the market. Vastly better than anything else. I love the scale of it, I like that the game is not holding my hand into a certain playstyle (despite what the "OMG the earning is so compared to trading you should trade instead" people of this forum are saying, there is multiple viable way of having fun), and I must admit the direction SC is taking is not exiting me anymore (I don't frakking want an FPS, I want a space sim).

I was/am in the exact same boat, unfortunately after cruising the forums it seems like Elite is going to add pointless FPS play as well and some people seem to be very excited about it. I personally hope they don't waste money on it.

To answer the question: I play because I get to fly my spaceship.

Played every space sim worth mentioning since early '90s : Star Wars sims (from MS-DOS X-Wing to the amazing Alliance), Wing Commander series, Freespace 1 & 2, Starlancer and Freelancer and so on.. How could I skip this ED masterpiece? I love space :p

Because I need something to do in the time between other game releases (PinballFX2 also covers part of this time), I have a quite significant time investment in both the game and some custom control hardware, I've met a lot of cool people and they still play too. Also I haven't "Finished" it yet.

Because it's the best game published since the 20 last years.... Because it's an oldschool gameplay and for the first time since many years, i have found the game i'll play for coming years !

I played Elite 31 years ago.
Elite is fun and the attention of detail that FDev put into the new game is amazing.
I play it to relax, and to try and figure out how the background sim works!

When (If) SC comes out, I won't be getting it.
Call me a fanboi, if you like.

It feels like Star Wars, HHGTTG and Guardians of the Galaxy all rolled into one!

FPS also covers being able to walk (float in zero-g) around your spaceship and stations not just combat. So maybe that is something to look forward to?

I'm looking forward to getting a true sense of my ships size.

I used to play religiously for a few months because I found the trading fun and relaxing, I also lost my 18 month old daughter in January to it was a great coping mechanism for dealing with the loss; not too intense and just enough mundane actions to keep my mind busy in trading.

I have not played for going on 2 months now because I simply ran out of goals to acheive in the game, though I hope to return when they have added more tools to encourage emergent gameplay :)

Maybe Power Play will be your new thing? :)

Lots of talk about SC here...

I think the main problem with SC is that it has become the "space sim of choice" of the Furry community and I'm pretty sure those freaks will end up ruining it. I once checked their forums, first discussion had at least 3 Star Foxes in one page.. I instantly closed the window.

I really don't feel comfortable playing a game interacting with people who want to bang my Dogs.

Its a shame really... it had a lot of potential.
