With all the doom and gloom about PowerPlay:

I just wanted to post that the powerplay update is how I heard about Elite, via some comments on Steam.

PowerPlay is the reason I bought E:D. So far from all reports im reading from actual testers, PowerPlay is shaping in to the exact reason I purchased the game and as such I can not wait til they clear out the bugs and release this live. For everyone who says "Well I won't be playing powerplay/factions, so it was wasted development resource/time".. well for every person that feels like that, I can attest that there are others who are solely/expressly looking forward to the powers alignment. In fact it's how I've gotten a fed of my buddies interested as well.

It's good for you, but many of us paid in excess of $200 USD to back this game, and now it is turning into a generic MMO. We don't want that, but still, I'm glad you're happy.

What it is, is pretty much there are a lot of people who had their own vision of Elite: Dangerous that isn't what it is becoming. One of the big arguments is that a lot of people (or a lot of people who are vocal on the forums) that play Elite are not people who have a lot of time to play the game (people with family, time consuming jobs, or other obligations) feel like there is content being added that, if they do not participate, will be missing out on game-breaking content or just content in general. There are a lot of good threads out there (which sadly suffer from people who reply just utterly complaining and whining and not adding constructive content to the discussion) that offer up solutions to the problems that the latter suggest.

i am a backer to, and i think that whit PP i am finally starting to get my moneys worth, so speak for yourself.

Well as a married father of 3(one being a 2 year old) and a wife that is back in school working on her Masters degree as a nurse practitioner, I fully understand the concept of tiered grinding and so forth and not having wads of time to allocate towards getting that top level. It's not my goal to be the best or the top of the ladder but to work with my old friends and friends I've yet to make and make sure that the Power we decide to back becomes as powerful as we can help make it.

Primal, not really sure if starting this thread here was a good idea. You are not able to access the beta, but started a thread that is edging on a flamebait here. I`ll believe you did not intend it to be so, but that´s what it amounts to more or less. You already caught couple people into a small spat.

I really doubt beta forums need a discussion about there being people who are liking the idea or don´t like the idea. It´s all over the threads on the first page already. Talk about the patch and the mechanics and take the generic discussions to general topic forum.

i think its a great idea, and a incredible bad idea that beta should be for backers only.
us backers that wanted another path for the game got bullied out early on. in my case i even received death threats on my twitter, but i am a fighter so im back again.
PP is bringing new people to the game and old people back, their voices deserve to be heard and not silenced by the bullying beta community whit all their hyperbole.

<snip>

But by the love of god, do not equate people just posting here on forums to some twerps who send you personal death threat messages. It takes a special kind of mongrel to do something stupid like that. Especially on Twitter, where the evidence stays pretty much forever.

Regardless of how people feel about the power play expansion if you felt bullied in the beta and received twitter threats that is just wrong on so many levels.......did you inform the Devs about it? At any rate welcome back and agree or disagree nobody should feel or deserves to feel like they are being silenced or threatened imho

Yes, the goal to make you're chosen Power as powerful as you can make it... okay. But to what end? Beyond gaining a little Power-specific trinket for your ship IF you make the appropriate rank, what is the overall gain - how does the Universe change after expending all that credit-less effort in seeing your Power rise to the top of the heap? Why am I embarking on this goal when I could be enriching myself by making a ton of credits trading or BH? What does the player gain when chosing to participate in PP beyond just being a simulated board token a la Risk? If I could get an answer to this, perhaps I'd be more open to PP. And I apologize if I'm just too dense to understand what I've read so far about PP.
Is it simply about bragging rights? Is it like Battlefield 4 mmo gameplay, never ending back and forth fighting on a conquest map with each new cycle... just for the sake of competition?
I think I'm missing something very basic about the purpose of PP... or at least I hope I am. This is the part that eludes me. I can't seem to grasp why I should make goals of having a particular Power become the biggest. Somebody help me understand this please.

A lot of it is to drive the narrative. Instead of forcibly pushing the game in a specific direction, the developers are giving us the ability to personally have a hand in it. You can also eliminate and take these characters out of power. If you read the PowerPlay manual, it talks about this. A lot of this is lore and story content, with little buffs and equipment on the side.

This game isn't about credits. Just like how life isn't completely about money. Yes they may be the driving force for many of the things we aspire for, but the moment it all becomes about the credits/money, where does the fun go? If all you do in life (Real life) is try to make money to no end, then where is your time to go out and fun going to go?

While some of my wording might seem to express otherwise, I'm actually in full agreement with you that the game shouldn't be all about credits. I was just framing my questions in a way that covered all bases.
Considering I am not ensconsed in Elite lore and story, I was afraid that this focus on story/lore would be a leading facit behind PP. It seems that one will need to immerse themselves in the lore to a fair degree, to actually read the Galnet news once in awhile, if they really want to have an appreciation for PP. That's actually okay in my book, as I miss a bit of story while getting immersed in the great simulation aspect of Elite. But I guess my best wishes would be for PP to be implemented with more of an internal game mechanic that draws the player into the story when engaged in the PP part of the game, instead of relying on hit or miss news feeds to fill in the void... or, God forbid, any outside-of-game reading and research. I'm terrible with that.
But this is helpful in understanding the purpose of PP. Thanks for the feedback.

I personally love the changes. I really do not understand why people are so upset. This is a base to build from. Could there be more? Of course. Is it perfect, nope. Same goes with any major change. I hope they launch it soon.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but my post is regarding the PowerPlay beta and whether or not I have access to the beta means little. I still have friends that I have made that are in the beta and are just as excited about the new faction powers as I am ( see how I've already surrounded myself with like minded players?) You talk about flaming in both your posts in this thread, yet the only one I see as derisive are yours?

Thanks this is exactly why I made my post. I had never heard of Elite until a ffew weeks ago, thanks to Steam. As a result I am here and waiting for the live release of PowerPlay so that I can pledge allegiance to Torval.

Immersing yourself in the story and becoming a part of the factions Power that you choose to back. I know myself and a few friends plan to make sure Torval's agenda on increased Imperial Slave populations is pushed forward with vigor.

I agree wholly!

Well I'm certainly done with the forums at this point. Thank you mods for proving that vocal, derisive whiners like Bazor are who you cater these forums towards.

Can't say I've used my beta access for more than a quick test of the new ships nor have I been following the Powerplay feedback because it's not something that I think will interest me personally.

Personally I think people in this forum just enjoy a good whine every now and then. It was only ever a matter of time once they agreed to issue Steam Keys. ;)

What's neat about PP is that you can completely ignore it if it doesn't fit with your playing style.

PP leaves me cold, and in beta I ignored it, instead I was busy enjoying all the other goodies in v1.3.
