Choices Choices

As a bit of input:

i do own an X52 (no pro here, cause i'm cheap), and i'm quite happy with it. It works well in all games that i tried, and the Elite: Dangerous Alpha has a preset for it, and it works very smoothly.
The X52 / X52 pro has one advantage over all other HOTAS that i've looked at - the price compared to what you get is good.

The cheaper Thrustmaster Sticks felt a lot worse (to me) than the X52, and the more expensive ones well, are extremly expensive (more than tripple the price of an X52 for the Warthog Hotas), and while those they are really convincing quality wise that might just a bit too much of a price.

Waiting for the X55 is a gamble, its not out yet, so you cant try it =)

That remains to be proved. I am the guy with the mouse/keyboard

Yeah, I've managed some quality flying on flight sims with mouse over some counterparts with JS.

However JS has been chosen.. it's the X52/X52pro

Now I just need to decide on a new monitor.... Strange how the topic has 3 feeds, but only the joystick has been discussed....

Thinking of one of these two

I'm playing with a 360 pad until the X55 is out - I think it looks much more like proper flight gear (like the X65) compared to the X52.

Obviously if it doesn't get reviewed well (I doubt I'd get a chance to try it) I'll go for X52 Pro instead.

It looks cool enough to wait and see, and ED isn't out properly for a few months so not much lost.

I thought that was the earliest possible date for a beta, and DB was keen on a reasonably long beta.

Alpha was planned as Dec (success)

Beta1 is planned as Jan (on Schedule so far)

Beta2 is planned as Feb (on Schedule so far)

*new* Gamma *for all pledgers* is planned for March to test - Pre release maybe for 1-2 weeks

Release is planned as Mar (on Schedule so far) probably to the end of March though as the Gamma has been inserted.

I was looking at the Thrustmaster but I'm going to pick up an X52 i think, just wish it didn't have all those stupid LEDs on it, can you turn them off?

With the standard x52 you can dim them (or turn them off), with the pro you can also change their colours.

It's important that the lights on your peripherals all match you see.

i've got a question for those that own the X52 Pro - can the flip up 'safe' cover be assigned as a button - my thought is that it would be cool to use this to initiate the weapons (ie activating the guns from the hardpoints) - I would love to assign missiles to the covered safe button and the index finger trigger to a gun.

that's assuming the preset isn't already setup like this!

thanks awfully

Thanks its the pro i'm looking at, I have a Logitech keyboard that lights up so i can type without the room lights on (old man eyes, the monitor illumination isnt bright enough anymore) but wont need LEDs on a stick to find the buttons, they make it look like a toy to me rather than a decent bit of kit although i'm sure some people like them.

I thought that might be good for eject. Especially in Hardcore mode you will want it at your finger tips, but not somewhere you can accidentally press.

The cover itself is not connected so it cannot be assigned. The button under the cover is currently set to deploy/store the weapons. As weapons deploys when pressing fire anyway this is kind of redundant at the moment and could probably be assigned to something else later on when more complexity sets in.

I suspect that action will probably come into use when you need to retract your weapons, rather than the (as you say) redundant deployment action... such as for docking, surrendering!, etc...

Indeed, it was mentioned in one of the DDF archives that not retracting your weapons near a station could result in fines etc.

Thanks for the reply. I would much prefer they didn't deploy when hitting the trigger / fire button, I can certainly imagine accidentally firing a round or two in error when trying to manoeuvre during a docking or trying to shadow a larger freighter.

Hopefully somewhere will have stocks of the X52 Pro after Christmas, been holding off for the 1st stage beta, but may try and grab one before. got a felling they're gonna be real popular once the beta is released.

:)

It is handy having the option of a trigger press to unbutton the weapons from storage. But it would also be nice if you could turn this link off so that you have to press some manual release of the weapons. Surely that would be easy to implement.

Get one sooner rather than later for sure. I ordered my x52 6 months ago from dabs.com when they were £89 and out of stock (they were expecting resupply) I only received it about 3 weeks ago and I see the price has gone above £100 recently, they will all be cashing in on the ED/SC boom

some info

Folks...as of alpha...I've settled in with my Warthog, its a beautiful Hotas system but pricey, I have in my closet the x52 pro and the x65 also, all 3 sticks are good choices for this game, the x65 and warthog being the more robust sticks in the selection due to materials used and one using force sensing ie the stick doesn't move but works off the force applied to the stick(x65) this basically means no moving parts but takes a bit to get used too

of some note its throttle is split which can be good for using part of your throttle for your role if you don't like using the z axis on the stick...the x52 and x65 both support z axis role on the stick but can lead to drift...most disable that feature and pit it to pedals or the left throttle on the split throttle. The warthog doesn't have a z axis on the stick so I set the roll to left split on its throttle and pitch and yaw to respective x and y axis's.

construction materials for the x65 and warthog are of metal construct where as the x52 is plastic, the x55 that will be released looks to be a pricier x52 with a few perks on a changeable spring but overall construction at this time seems plastic( I could be wrong) and should probably fall short of the x65 tag, but probably 50-100 dollars us higher than the 52 pro, there are good bargain sticks out there for less but I cant allude to their durability or how long they hold center before drifting occurs, someone mentioned hall effect sensors in the x52 pro...that must be some new changes as the one I purchased a bit over 2 years ago has pots...the x65 uses force sensing much like an f16 stick...and the warthog well thrustmaster took some lessons from the modding community on the cougar and used hall effect sensors in their warthog from get go rather than the pots that will at one point go bad...making for a good long lasting and robust stick.

as to hardware...ive run the alpha at 1920 x 1080 p on a rig with a 560 ti and an amd 1090 x 6 BE chip on an crosshair iv rog mb with 12 gig ripsaw mem and win 7 64...22 inch monitor...current clock per core is 3.2 stock...air cooled but stable at 4 and great fps for alpha in all the fight senarios...hope this helps
