To the FDL who can't handle being shot at...

The direction this thread has turned almost makes me feel like ole Rorschach over there.

Really though, I'm just glad we have that whole 1st amendment thing in the U.S.

Jeez you Brits let your government bump you with that whole Public Order Act of 1986. Not that America is much better...

A judge... something of a gray area. I'm not quite sure where 'freedom of speech' leaves off and 'contempt of court' begins.

I'm of the opinion this distinction is drawn solely from whatever Law Enforcement (and their jurisdiction) you're dealing with. A local county sheriff's deputy will probably just cuss you back and nothing more. A major urban area cop will beat the life out of you, then charge you with assaulting him. A state police employee will probably act reasonably, unless their partner is a sadist, which is apparently 15% of all LEO's. And finally, God forbid you have to deal with any Federal LEO; DHS, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals will probably just shoot you and plant something on your body.

At least we can say offensive things though, sometimes...

Nah, a local sherriff's deputy won't even do that. He'll be a perfect gentleman... unless or until he has the slightest excuse, and then in the process of arresting you, he'll bounce your skull off something hard enough to dent steel. If you didn't actually attack him, he'll do it "accidentally". If you did, he was within his rights anyway. I heard about one cop who handled it exactly like this--some dope was running off at the mouth and the cop just smiled and took it... until the idiot tried to stab him with a pen. At that point, the man's head really did dent the steel of his car hood when the cop cuffed him.

And of course if you don't give him an excuse to do that, he WILL find a reason to give you a very expensive ticket. There usually is one, but if you're nice they don't sweat the small stuff much.

I'm always nice to cops. Not because I have to be, but because then they'll feel like being nice to me... and a cop who feels like being nice to me will make my life a lot easier than one who doesn't, even if he has to write me a ticket anyway.

Being a kind person in public is definitely the way to go, especially with figures of disillusioned authority. I'm fortunate to live in a county in which we've had the same Sheriff for my entire lifetime. All of his employees are professional, courteous, and accountable.

All in all though, even with the cops killing 3 people per day in the U.S., they're still doing a heck of a better job than those System Authority who will merc you over a 300cr friendly fire fine. Or FDEV banning people for being 'offensive', for that matter.

This has gone spectacularly off topic!

But human nature is unsurprisingly the same over here (UK) - being nice to cops was known as "passing the attitude test".

If you failed "the attitude test" then the cops could resort to the "ways and means act".

My experience of such things was a long time ago - maybe it's changed - maybe it hasn't.

I've never ever reported anyone for bad language as it seems a complete waste of Frontier's time and attention. If you're an adult, please consider just letting it slide.

Any time CS have is much better spent on things like hacker reports and investigating genuine bugs.

I just reported you for this quote in the hope that it will waste Ian Phillips' time :D

Human nature may be the same but the law isn't--your cops can arrest you just for cussing, apparently. No freedom of speech provisions at all. On the other hand, I understand people can run around naked a lot more over there, so maybe it balances out.

You may be unaware, but multiple U.S. cities have stringent profanity laws. So, while the 1st amendment does exist here to protect your liberties of free speech, it does not (necessarily) protect you from saying anything you want without consequence. It makes for quite the murky of topics.

I'm not British and not subject to UK law.

You completely missed the point :(
And as you come from the land where almost anything is a law suit waiting to happen - I'd have thought you'd have gotten the point.
Putting up with someone else's is not "part of life", if someone is being offensive - there are legal ways you can respond. So, as it is not "part of life", why on earth would it be allowed in a game.

As for location, FD is UK based, DBOBE is English, raised with British standards of conduct and quite familiar with the UK Laws I listed. If someone is going to constantly throw colourful metaphors at other players, just like US game companies respond by US custom in an American way, FD will respond in a British way according to British customs.

One of which has been mentioned before - permanent shadow ban (so, no one around to insult / disrupt).

That doesn't work. It's vague and nonspecific, leaving me nothing to go by. I can't follow a rule if you haven't even laid out what it actually is.

I'll be staying in solo permanently I guess. I do tend to cuss people out if they do something rude, and apparently I'm now at risk of being kicked out of the game for something that hasn't even been specified in advance, so yeah, not practical to play with other people.

7.3.1 The Game and/or Online Features may allow communications between users by means including but not limited to text and voice. When using such features you must use common sense and good manners, your behaviour, conduct and communications must be considerate to other users and you must not be directly or indirectly offensive, threatening, harassing or bullying to others or violate any applicable laws including but not limited to anti-discrimination legislation based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

We have 50 states and 50 different laws concerning profanity. In my state, TX, the use of fighting words is an affirmative defense against assault. When some snot nosed punk calls you a *#&() (^$& you have the perfect legal right right to start beating the snot out of him right then and there. That and the fact that everyone carries a gun tend to keep our yutes much more polite in Texas than I've seen in Europe.

For those in England/Wales - there is also the Malicious Communications Act.

As to our American cousins, some of the stuff across there is so unreal.

A lawyer would have a field day with this as it is absolutely unenforceable (but this isn't a legal issue really now is it) - the only part that is, is the part that call out it cannot violate any anti-discrimination legislation - but that said - which countries anti-discrimination laws - some countries allow plenty - so which set do we all adhere to? The first part of the wording does not define what Frontier see as "common sense, good manners, behavior, conduct, communications must be considerate" <---- this is all very subjective, this tells me nothing other than to be 'nice' well my nice may not be the 'nice' of others.

Adding to the confusion - Station Ramming is NOT a punishable offense. Yet I would definitely call that out of line with good manners, behavior, conduct, AND common sense - but FD doesn't. Hence the reason for questions as it is not clear. I was blown away you couldn't mention another CMDRs name on these forums - or simply posting a video were ANY commanders name other than yours passes through the video could be considered naming and shaming.

There is an awful large clamp down on perceived 'behavior' issues when not many exist, here on the 'official' forum and the game - well in game there is station ramming and we are ignoring that.

So a player cannot play the role of a foul-mouthed, insulting, offensive and threatening scumbag pirate? (Is ED a role playing game?)
I find that so distressing; my anxiety levels have so increased that I am actually ill because of this prohibition.
I am the victim here and I demand legal redress.

Still absolutely amazed about all this defense going into 'cussing'.

Being rude is nothing to be proud of.

Antisocial behaviour is nothing to be proud of.

Being an ass is nothing to be proud of.

And the defense of such actions is reprehensible.

PS. Yes, I'm guilty of all three sometimes. I'm not a saint, but when I'm rude, antisocial or an ass I'm at least ashamed of it after. And if possible apologise.

I am genuinely staggered by the defense (or at least apathy towards) anti-social behaviour in this thread.

Although the OP is a little unusual in his approach to dealing with being on the end of abusive behaviour - he's not wrong.

There's no excuse for being a vile little keyboard warrior - whether you feel that you've been provoked or not.

Then no matter how you dress it you have no freedom of speech. I had to laugh at the op reporting someone for using bad language. Add a profanity filter or enable it if one is already present. I mean really? Is everyone fascist a nowadays. Does everyone get hurt feelings from what people type over the internet? What a state we are in. MAN UP! Oh noes I am a misogynist *sigh*

It's a game with adult themes. The game is hard and the stakes are high. Hours of play time can get ruined in seconds. I think a little bad language is fine actually. I have more problem with people blowing me up without cause or pirates stealing off me than someone g and blinding. I mean really get a grip people. Killing is ok so why not a few four letter words.

no one was reported for using bad language, the person was reported for hurling abuse and being abusive, tbh this thread is long since dead and should be locked, otherwise things are going to start going around in circles in and endless debate on something now that has little to do with the original post
