Racial diversity among the powerplay lead figures

Well, to be honest, Archon is clearly the darkest-skinned of the group.

and he's a pirate lord/smuggler/murderer.

So, if we really want to get into this, FD DID go there. And, I'm not surprised. Black folks(like myself) have always been cast as the bad guys. The "blacks and crime" connection has been, frankly, pounded into the heads, indoctrination-style, of people across the world.

Maybe I'm just going insane, or don't know which of these guys is which, but is not Archon Delaine the tall extremely white guy next to Denton Patreus? 4th from right?

Probably completely indistinguishable from a non-transgender person.

Really, I'd expect them to be able to gene therapy whatever 23rd chromosome you want, extract your brain, drop it in a nutrient vat, and have your brand new male, female, cat, dog, or whatever body grow around it.

Exactly this. Don't know if you've read any Richard Morgan? If not, I'd recommend him. Particularly his Takeshi kovacs books (might have murdered spelling there). Anyway, in that universe, people drop in and out of skin suits like changing running shoes. Bodies are about the fashion of the time (or what's available in a pinch), they are not tied to identity in the slightest. I think we're guilty of imposing 21st century problems on 3301.

Don't read too much into it folks. It's a game, there are no requirement for a creative endeavor to meet quotas.

It's not as though there isn't diversity in there, there is, it's just not close enough to the perfect mean that some people would like.

Are you implying that certain racial backgrounds are comparable to disabilities/genetic afflictions like dwarfism? That's a bit rude, y'know.

Of course there are no obesely-overweight people among the faction leaders - they have their trainers and personal assistants to keep them pristine. Medicine should have evolved far enough to solve disabilities/dwarfism (hopefully). The latter two are things any human, given the capability, would attempt to fix. Skin tone and racial identity, however, is NOT on the same level - not now, and not in a thousand years. (And, yes, bio-modifications a'la blue skin or fur-coated tails could be a thing. Sure. That, too, is on a different level).

What do you even mean by "how far do you want to go"? Having more dark-skinned faction leaders is "going far"? Really?

Curing dwarfism would actually be tougher that changing the skin pigment. So don't say that changing a skin color is more of a deal than completely reforming a person skeletal and organ structure.

No no no it's a non-issue race (color) is in the eye of the beholder, if you feel offended when looking at the portraits I suspect you may be a racially motivated. It never crossed my mind until this thread popped up. Creating drama where there is non, in this case is racially motivated..

You are assuming that people are offended, no? If you are arguing that race is an anthropological construct, that's fair enough, however I'm not entirely sure what you mean by suggesting that Adept's post is 'racially motivated', care to elucidate?

No I don't.

It is a rendering of the future within the context of the game. I don't see it as any kind of propaganda.

And I am actually qualified to discuss this topic.

People will throw in daft one liners (not you) about transgender representations perhaps trying to belittle a discussion but they do have a valid point. And there will be folk saying they are tired of political correctness and it's just a game. They don't have to get involved.

What exactly makes a person qualified to discuss this topic?

First off men are more driven to seek power than women usually. This is down to their inherent trait to be the hunter/gather type, to go out and make war to provide for the family/ tribe. So there will always be more men in power than women no matter what the century is.
Women are more inclined to stay at home (behind the scenes) rather than be in the lime light or line of fire. Due to their inherent mothering natures.
Well, I'm glad we've established that women would rather stay at home than be in the lime light or line of fire due to their inherent mothering natures. For a moment there I thought we were LIVING IN THE 21st CENTURY!!!

I'm also concerned that none of these leaders are visibly trans* :(

I know this is a weak attempt to troll, but even these days it can be hard to tell. In a Sci-Fi future if somebody decides to change their gender, you would not know they didn't start out like that.

I see a mix of races in those pictures and in all honesty until I unfortunatley clicked on this mess of a thread it never even entered my head.
Funny thing if all the pictures were of people of African/Asian descent this thread wouldn't exist.

What makes people think that gender is a fixed characteristic in 3301?

Edit: was actually agreeing with you, the way it quoted probably makes it seem otherwise ;)

Every post that criticises the line up is racially motivated.

P.S Where are the ginger haired people?

As a racial minority myself in the U.S, I see the powers line up just fine. Very fair and even amount of ethnicity and gender diversity. Some people just want to debate for the sake of debating and are probably just white males/females debating against other white males/females about racial diversity . Which is always amusing:D

I think the Empire has hotter younger women, is it ok that this upsets me? :p

Because it matters. If it wouldn't matter, you wouldn't be so upset, nor would you bother posting in this thread. Also humorous that addressing the fact that there isn't, a sigle black person (for instance) in the lineup "goes too far". I think the responses to this thread have made it abundantly clear that there is very much a reason to address these things, and that Frontier really missed an opportunity in not addressing it already.

Pretty arbitrary stuff right there. It does not matter at all, not one single bit, in my world.
