What's with the downtime on a Friday evening??

There is always the original version in the shop you can get if you are all suffering withdrawal symptoms :)

Would VMware imaging not be a major help in the server update process?
Pre-built servers....AND.....Switch! Boom! Done?

At least that's how upgrades & DR were in my last company. Seemed to work very well.

No doubt a backup, cutover, or data transformation has to happen at some point, during which time they don't want *new* live data coming in. That's probably more the issue.

I imagine the game database is huge. They need to stop everyone writing to it (playing it), back it up, write the new content to it, verify it, and switch it back on. It's not easy migrating a DB on the fly, and no amount of replicated images of it change that.

:(

Let's hope it goes smoothly. If not, nobody will be able to play this evening. They would have to restore the backup and push the update on back burners until they figure out what went wrong...

I'm sure it'll be fine. :)

The bigger question is - is it ready for public release?!

Not sure about that. Seeing the flurry of beta updates at the very end, I'm thinking that FDev was furiously trying to squash as many bugs as they could. It feels a bit rushed...

being an ex-World of Warcraft player, they always used to do their maintenance and updates on a Wednesday morning (uk time) which was good as it didn't interfere too much with what the players were doing as there weren't many on at that time.
Yeah, but they also used to do it weekly, whereas this game has had only a couple of updates since v1.2 was released.

This is not scheduled maintenance, it's a major new version roll-out.

I didn't play beta, but I have seen some posts from 'grounded' beta players who seem a little 'surprised' at the timing of the push out.

I guess we'll all find out this weekend! :D

Perhaps FDev should look at implementing a similar system?

Could not agree more. Quite a ridiculous time to enforce server downtime - very bad idea! Friday - Sunday are peak gaming hours, just can not stop shaking my head at what appears to be a poorly thought out idea here.

Very disappointed indeed.

Considering they only released Beta 8 yesterday, it seems rushed to me.

Also, having previously worked in I.T. one thing I learnt was never release updates/patches on a Friday. They normally take much longer than expected and should it fall over you're in a whole world of pain and looking at a long night.

Let's not be selfish and moan about the down time. Just feel sorry for the poor guys at Frontier who are going to have to work the weekend to support it.

I take the opposite view ... we've got all weekend to play with this puppy. One thing I observed during beta is that we won't truly appreciate or understand the PP mechanics until we have much greater scale of players involved.

I'm suspecting that with E3 being around the corner, they wanted to get this update out before concentrating on what they want to show.

It's a beautiful warm sunny day outside in the UK today. Why not let your skin experience sunlight for one day, the game will still be here this evening and tomorrow :)
It was (surprisingly) a really nice hot day in Amsterdam as well. I was outside until the afternoon and now there's a ing thunderstorm... :p
Not complaining though, at least it (finally) felt like summer even for a bit.

Edit: I can understand why they wanted to do this in the afternoon and not in the early morning hours as it seems that they will need all the staff to be working hard to get it going.

i was slightly annoyed, until i realised that my weekend is weird (friday and saturday) and that they are trying to get it out for normal weekend time. makes sense to me.

I still work in IT and Friday is always a no no, but then again we don't want the phone calls at the weekend!

Standard 'IT roll out rules':
Monday is a no no as everyone is still hungover from the weekend.
Tuesday is a good day as Monday has worn off.
Wednesday is even better because you might as well spice up the most boring day of the week!
Thursday is too close to Friday.
Friday is too late....,

One guy with a big bushy beard, turning the server off and on again, constitutes staff!

A friend was complaining about storms near Rotterdam, and not being able to play EQ2.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've hardly even loaded the game this week, anticipating the new version - and the forums have been half-dead. Basically, after over a week of beta testing to tantalise us, not to mention building up media expectations, there's no way they could have afforded to sit on this much longer.

They maybe could've held out until Tuesday, but at least by hitting the weekend they're giving the players time to work through the remaining issues and can start dealing with the fallout on Monday.
