Cockpits look amazing but...Readon

I was thinking around five seconds with panels independently firing up...screens flashing, holographic images flickering to life.....And of course the whine or roar of the engines coming online ..

Something I would like to see I think :)

PS...A sexy voice saying " Systems online " or similar as an option wouldn't go a miss either :)

Hmm? Me thinks, someone's been playing waaaay to much Mechwarrior. :p I agree though, there should be system power ups (in different ways and speeds) for different ships.

Why would you even turn the ship off? Depending on what's powering it, it may not be possible to switch it off. Plus continually turning electronics off/on shortens their life, especially in cold enviroments :p

Perhaps when entering stealth mode as part of completely reducing heat / electromag sigs or feigning death ?

Would be funny if the only way to capture a ship was to leave yours and try to force you way into the prey, only to find that half way in that space walk, it initiates its start-up sequence.

That's actually a good point though. The power up sequence in MWO does not get old, or annoying, not matter how many times I experience it. If it is simply part of the mechanics of the game then you accept it as it is.

I will admit though that every time the start-up sequence occurs I silently root for Betty to say "Sensors: offline. Weapons: offline. All systems !" ;)

Maybe for a quick dock, sell cargo and out, you would leave it powered up and no start up is necessary.
But if you actually get out of the ship, repair it, or fit major new components, you would need to do a cold start.

Actually that's a good example of the type of thing I was talking about and as DYSEQTA stated ...Its part of the game and doesn't really annoy anyone and is pretty cool :)

Heres a good example

Agreed... The option on requesting docking could have a holographic tab appear onscreen stating " Do you require Power down " or similar could also add to the reality of the game :)

Or of course a manual powerdown so you can choose either way..

If we have powering up, can we have a remote (something like car alarm / central locking) so that we have the option of it all being up and running when we board.

I havn't played that much Mechwarrior online, but I have played it enough that that the start-up sequence is starting to irritate me. The basic idea is fine, it just needs to be cut down to about 3 seconds and without copying the annoying joystick waggle.

"You touch that joystick and... I'M GOING TO CUT YOUR FRIKKEN HAND OFF! I'm warning you! ARGGH, you waggled it again... right, now I'm mad!"

Tell you the truth, I'd like to see a longer startup as part of the norm and a fast override startups that risk mild engine damage and/or systems that have not been configured correctly. I'd also like to see different ships having different start up times. I mean, I wouldn't expect an Anaconda to power up at the same speed as Winder, Krait or Eagle. I really hope the guys at FD seek to build "individuality" into these ships, on all levels (including possible startups like this).

:)

Well, you sir are in the extreme minority because us old gits from the older NetMech days of Mechwarrior 2 loved that startup so much we voted for it to be re-installed in MWO. Guess what? They obliged ... and the game is now better and more immersive for it. :D

The government is always banging on about putting all your electronics on standby! I wonder if they will do the same thing in the future!?

"Remember folks, put that reactor on standby when you aren't using it. Together we can save the rainforests on Lave! Are you doing your bit?"

This puts me in mind of the old MS Flight Simulator add-ons you could get that would let you do cold and dark starts for things like a 737 - took 15 minutes and a checklist if done properly :D

I do remember I-War 2 had a sequence that showed you getting into the cockpit ready for launch. Only took a few seconds but got very old very fast.

The problem (as I see it) is that it's always the same sequence no matter what mech you're in, lasting exactly the same time, with exactly the same voice. Only the appearance of the cockpit changes. It starts to feel like some sort of nervous twitch you can't stop doing. Even a small amount of variation would help, then you could have the immersion without the irritation!

I think such a "cockpit boot up" would get pretty boring after a few dozen undocking procedures.

There's a reason why your car or your PC doesn't do much brimborium when it starts up.

My car goes through a nifty startup sequence (needles moving, displays turning on, screens popping up, sideview mirrors unfolding...) It takes about 3 to 4 seconds. It doesn't bother me (Although at this point I completely ignore it). And people who have never seen it think it's pretty cool.

I think a short enough sequence (5 seconds at most) would look fantastic.

And for the people asking why would you turn the ship off, I would say there are many systems in a ship. Many of them may never be turned off, but it makes sense to me to turn off things like engines, hyperdrives, and navigation systems after docking.

To follow the car's example, when you turn any modern car off there are plenty of things stiill running on battery power.

Cockpits look amazing but...Will there be a power up function?

In other words you enter the ship and the cockpits may look pretty dull...Then when you power up all the systems light up and come to life at a nice pace, checking systems.... powering functions etc ?

I think that would add to the atmosphere of the ship...

Any thoughts ?

I would love this!
I have a Nissan Leaf electric car and I actually boot it up so it pretty much looks exactly like you described.

It would give me the hump, i get the hump waiting for the glow plug lights to go out in a diesel car let alone waiting for stuff to blink and flash for no reason.
