Very excited by this game but...

(emphasis mine) "done right"

Yes well, what gives me hope is that Braben raised that point before all yall so there :p

But his emphasis on getting the core game right first means that we don't need to be concerned about it. Each stage will get done to the best of their abilities, so everyone wins as much as it is possible to do so, and we get to play the game NEXT YEAR! (Some of us this year :()

(emphasis mine)
Indeed.
The game that came to my mind while reading this is Battlecruiser 3000AD, with his extremely ambitious game play promises.
(I still ocasionally play Batlecruiser Millenium Gold)

I, in fact, have a copy of BATTLECRUISER MILLENIUM sitting on my desk with the rest of my collection (OK, the surviving bits my ex-wife didn't burn when she got served the divorce papers ) For the life of me I can't find my Bruce Campbell signed copy of Tachyon :(

At its heart, my opinion is that this new elite game should be primarily a space game, with all the bells and whistles and complexities of shifting power to the shields, dumping heat sinks etc etc etc...More complexity please, give me DEPTH :D

However, I will NOT be at all disappointed if at some developmental stage of the game they incorporated exiting your ship while landed on a strange alien world all with its own topography, weather systems, atmosphere etc

And to go on a big game hunt to bag yourself an 8 legged velociraptor with 3 heads and put it in your cargo bay to sell on a distant station the other side of leesti fuels my imagination and excites me no end...Done right, it could be preposterously brilliant.

And YES, I DO want to be able to walk round my ship (especially once i can afford a panther or anaconda), and yes I do want to be able to walk around the space station and have random chats with bar staff, clientele, mercenaries, guards, civvies etc etc etc

More immersion, more depth, more variety, more more more!! YES PLEASE :D

Now i'm not stupid, this obviously will take years to implement but as david braben said: He doesn't envisage ever making another elite: He's going to continually add to this incarnation and make it the best it can be.

What I want, also is CHOICE. For the players that don't want to exit their ships and explore an alien world: Don't force them to do it. give them choice.
And if I can't be arsed to get out my ship, once docked on an orbital station, to sell my wares manually, then also give me an option to sell my wares from the comfort of my cockpit via a pop up display.

Choice, choice, choice...immersion, depth, gameplay

This is my view.

[APPLAUSE]Well said![/APPLAUSE] :D

Its gonna be hard though. Id dearly love to see a considerable effort put into the FPS side of this game however getting that right is going to be hard as i think we'll end up with Mass Effect style cookie cutter buildings which are the same all over the place.

I guess we'll see what they have in store soon enough though and i have faith.

Yes that is the risk, but I don't think we will get cookie cutter buildings. I think it will be more like massively procedural cities that won't look the same at all, but we might become very apathetic to the variety if there is not alot of content in them. Thats why in my mind it would be worth considering player buildings or habitats. If you give the player the ability to craft alittle haven in some backwater world that only he has the coordinates for, it might add to gameplay considerably. Even having different tiers of complexity to how elaborate these little abodes can become might make things alittle bit more interesting.

I am personally hoping for this level of procedural planet technology. Add to this player generated content and you might have something very interesting.

If we get something that even approaches this level of complexity I will be amazed and awed. The thing to remember is that these terrain generators are designed to just do that and nothing else. What we have here is a game that is having to a whole load of other things as well as that. Is it possible to do all that and have that level of fidelity? I have no idea but I really hope so.

The player-generated content is a good idea, but something like that will need monitoring and moderating, because...well, there's all kinds of people out there :D

The procedural planet tech is great, it reminded me of this atmosphere tech demo, created by two guys (their kickstarter project "Reset" was just recently successfully funded).

I certainly didn't expect to see real time rendering of atmospheric effects. That's the kind of thing where, if they were to add a camera mode that mimics an aeroplane or helicopter flight model, I would be happy for literally hours! :)

I remember that video now. To be fair I don't think FD's looks quite as good perhaps but it is good. Imagine being able to fly through that, on the way down or up! 2014 is going to be great year for FD, I'm certain of it!

Creating variety in alien life would be quite challenging. Maybe they'll follow the formula from the "Spore" where it is assumed that any life must be n-pedal connected to torso as central part of an organism.

It should be doable, although life forms might seem too look-alike from planet to planet. Also there must be a variety of life forms on each planet, as it's improbable that only one life form (non-intelligent) would dominate the ecosystem. At least 6-10 major ones for a planet would create sufficient variety. Surely there's no need to create microscopic lifeforms.

Although, wouldn't be strange that every major surface life form is n-pedal?

Well, DB said that it was "early days yet". That was just an early prototype experiment in how it could be done. It will (or probably already has) been improved. ;)

Also, I'm not quite sure that the clouds in "Reset" is/was truly volumetric. They never fly above those clouds in the tech demo so I guess they are not really 3d but rather some "semi-3d" skybox effect.

.

Considering how raw the combat video looked around the same time compared to the alpha's progress, I'm pretty confident that that early tech demo would look pretty damn sweet come expansion time :D

Agreed. They probably have at least a year before even the first expansion is released. Most likely more I expect but you have to keep your hopes up! :)

Rather than being foremost a "first person shooter", I'd really rather see the emphasis on building real worlds, that can be explored and enjoyed (or otherwise!)

I would LOVE it if you could fly off, find an undiscovered hospitable planet, land by a beautiful shoreline and fish for a day, or go exploring or whatever.

Of course, if you happen to come across someone else doing the same, a good blaster by your side is always handy. :D

Stupidly enough I really want to have a Kryss carved out a Shai-Uluhud tooth. That I just killed.

:)

Pretty please?
A Still-Suit would have me to release the Wallet!

The first person aspect doesn't necessarily have to have weapons though. Between two parties there could just be some intent staring.

I have concerns that if hand held weapons enter in to things that this could end up like the Battlecruiser games.

A nice idea here, very poorly implemented.
