stealing starships

It might be worth pointing out that one of the start positions listed during the kickstarter had the option of starting with a stolen and upgraded Cobra.

"Pirate: Have the option to start in an anarchic Frontier system with a stolen but upgraded Cobra Mk III and only 100 CR.(randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons)** plus all rewards above."

That seems to indicate that "alternative" methods of ship acquisition will indeed be in the game.

If so, such folk engaged in such unscrupulous activities may need to get creative, such as here. ;)

Almost certainly, but you would start in a system where this is unlikely to be enforced by the authorities and yet surrounded by folk who might like to turn you in all the same! :)

If you start with a stolen Cobra, logically you start also with a bounty on the head, is not it ?

:D

That would make sense Patrick, leaving such a person with the dilemma of either paying off the authorities or just adding to the bounty on their head with more piracy. A tough start indeed.

Well I would take that as a given for anarchy systems, but even so, thieves could strike in even the most safest of ports. Making sure you secure your ship properly before you disembark could be well worth remembering.

David Braben mentions this specifically in one of the KS Dev diaries (in conjunction with the walking around expansion), if it's technically possible - expect it in game :)

Wasn't that bit rather about sneaking on board planting a bomb or something like that? Not that it makes much of a difference, since if you could do that you could also probably steal the ship, which would by the way be pretty neat.

Could also be me experiencing a memory malfunction ...

Probably a memory failure by me ;), I've had a look for the quote in the vids and I can't find it now. Still as you say, if you can sneak on board - you could most likely steal it.

bait ships?

If ships can be stolen, what about being able to deliberately leave them, with a tracking device and some sort of remote control. Leave a simple ship with poor wepons and an empty cargo bay, and when the thief has upgraded and filled with expensive cargo...

... reminds me of "the buttons are black with black indentification, and when activated light up black", "we seem to be on autopilot heading for the sun!"

so....

you land at a station after an extended period exploring an asteroid belt.... bit of prospecting, bit of mining. first thing... dock the ship get repairs and fuel.... wipe the windcreen check the tyres, check the oil, dollar gas... that kind of thing. then sell whatever is profitable. then a bath, fresh food, drink and company of the gender of choice...... eventually sleep.

after that you head back to the docking bay and......

dude, where's my ship!!!!!!!!!!

after that.... everyone is watching you. especially security. why? not because your ship was stolen. but, because you have no ship.... i'm sure you can join the dots up. if not, you shouldn't be here.

It should be hard to steal a ship, even these days cars are hard to steal, most thieves either pick them up with a truck, break into your house and steal the keys or just car jack you.

It should require a lot of skill to get into a ship, get it to start AND be able to get a stolen ship out of a secure dock.

Something as big and expensive as a starship that is also a mans home and probably in a lot of cases carries everything he owns is not going to be left vulnerable to casual criminals, or at least it shouldn't be.

If it was possible I'd have mine set up so that every time you started it you had to enter a code within 30 seconds or it would lock all the doors and just pump the air out, replacing it with a hallucinogenic gas and turn all the power off except for strobe lights and the stereo system which I would have blasting Ace Of Spades at maximum volume on repeat.

People keep forgetting that the Elite Dangerous universe is vast. The chances of even running into other players in the core worlds is miniscule at best.

Its more likely you will be jacking starships belonging to your average NPC schmoe. People, we are talking about 250 light year bubble with at most 40,000 people logged in at launch and a fraction of that on a good day after release and the novelty wearing off. Am I right? Do the maths.

I prefer to see my stolen spaceship, when I'm in a space station, that to see this when I'm in space during an exit. Always be positive and see the good side of things

unless there are limited worlds that sell one particular commodity, or a mission that requires you to visit a particular station, or an NPC that must be tracked down or somewhere popular like earth, or somewhere that happens to be the best value for ship modifications etc etc.

Boarding starships

My dream scenario would be as follows:

  1. Target and destroy enemy ships drive subsystem so that it cant escape in battle.
  2. Board the enemy ship.
  3. In 1st/3rd person view fight enemy crew to take control of the ship.
  4. Transfer cargo to own ship or steal enemy ship and sell at pirate base or take hostages/bounty reward.

As you have guessed, I am probably a bit of a Firefly fan.

Hopefully a few expansions into the future, this may be possible.

I would imagine the situation regarding stolen ships would be much like cars of today. If your ship is stolen and you are supplied with a new one, if it is recovered then it is the property of the insurance company. Changing the apparent ship registration would be quite easy for "Ringers" but on a deep scan implemented by a suspicious security force the ship's true identity should be easily uncovered (Similar to a car's VIN, maybe the ship's infrastructure is printed with a "SIN" that is very difficult to alter without leaving evidence of tampering).

As for theft, I liked a tale I heard many years ago where someone routed the ignition of their car through a push-to-break button hidden behind the ashtray. No matter how hard anyone tried to jump the ignition, if the ashtray hadn't been pulled out first, the car wouldn't start. In a high theft area, the car was often broken into, but never stolen. Simple solutions are often the best :D

Imagine it, you've just docked on one of achenar's many orbital stations and left the cockpit to go carousing in one of the many neon lit bars to erm....chat up girls and booze...

...and someone boards your ship and hotwires the ignition and speeds off with your ship while your otherwise 'engaged'...

Will this ever be possible? Hilarious (until it happens to me lol)

I dream of an electric dobermann to guard my ship while i'm 'otherwise 'engeged''. Or maybe the killer-cat-robot from 'Red Planet' might be a good choice to do that job .

Maybe that's just a matter of price at the local ship-expansion dealer. A good hatch lock might be the cheapest way secure your ship, but can be picked easily. Stationary sentry-drones (like the ones in 'Aliens') are a bit more expansive but can be tampered with. Special equipment needed to do that could be purchased from 'shady' characters like the ones you find on pirate bases.

But whatever you try or do, the one and only way to secure a ship as well as a house is to buy a dog, either robotic or maybe there is a cool animal that can be found on a certain planet that make a good sentry-'glompph' (or whatever that beast is called). Of course it must to be trained first, so you can hire a 'glompph'-whisperer, otherwise your need for medical supplies (articial shinbones) might rise dramatically :D.

(...) It is unlikely there there will ever be a "GAME OVER" screen for us so how to FD plan to deal with whatever the bottom of the rung is as far as you financial situation is concerned?

Why is it that i can hear Tyler Durden (the Brad Pitt character in 'Fight Club') speaking when i read that?
"Right now where you are you can't even imagine what the bottom would be like".

You're right in spirit, but I just wanted to point out the difference between 40000 current backers and hopefully much larger player base on release!

We will be able to own multiple ships, so if one us stolen, we could have another one delivered to the station for a spot of revenge :).

I also wonder if we will be able to claim a ship after someone has used an escape pod :).
