When should I jump in and buy this game?

Do not base your decision based on these forums. They tend to paint a far more negative picture about the game then the reality, is my opinion anyway.

I was also a big fan of Frontier on the Amiga, which is why I purchased this game at Beta stage.
I have logged a rather large number of hours, not sure how many and to be honest I am still enjoying this game immensely.
Personally I think that there's is a shed load of stuff to do, and still loads I haven't done yet.

It has also made me splash out on HOTAS and DK2+GPU.

For me Elite Dangerous is everything I wanted, plus its the first ever proper VR experience.

It's mega for me, but maybe not for everybody.

The best game I've brought in recent memory and will always be my first VR experience.

Buy it now and get all the bugs it has!
Buy it next year and get all the further bugs it will have!
Don't buy it and get nothing!
/sarcasm

I pledged for Star Citizen and bought Elite: Dangerous at the same time, in early February 2015.
What can i say? I didn't play SC more than 2 hours in all that time..
I played Elite for a month and then get bored. After two months i've returned. Now it's the third week since i play and enjoy it every day.

So, grab your 60$ and send them to my card buy this really GOOD spaceSIM ASAP!

Considering you may end up playing it for thousands of hours, 2013 was the best time to buy it, but now will do. :)

Thanks people. Some food for thought in these comments, and some good advice....

I understand in the 21st century no game is ever "finished", I guess what I've been trying to convey is that, had this been any other game, I probably would have paid for it, tried it and, if I didn't like it, toss it aside and never play it again.

But because this is THE game, that I've been waiting for, I'm somewhat fearful of not liking it... and I really want to like it...

I guess my question in the title was somewhat unfair because there's no right answer, but from the feedback I believe the time is nigh to get back into the cockpit, neglect the wife, kids, job and friends for the next few months and begin the adventure!

It's not ready and I have lost faith that it will ever be.

It's a broken set of mini-games which don't connect well. None of them are absolutely terrible individually - the worst of them has a high meh-factor. But they do not make a coherent whole.

Light-years wide, millimetres deep.

If you love grind, pay up now and get grinding. You may have gotten somewhere by the time the price drops.

leave it until planetary landings and/or walking around ships drop, by then we will know if FD ever plan to make a decent game by improving the existing, shallow gameplay systems or just keep giving us the minimum viable product for each new gameplay system.

Hi there.

I bought the gaem when it was in beta. maybe played 5 hours max and "gave up" on it and decided to wait for the full release. When release came around these forums set me of from even installing it to check it out again. After watching some livestreams last week I decided to give it a go. I havn't touched a single other game for a straight 4 days now. And all my free time has gone into it.

Every time I have a hard time closing it to leave for bed.

What I am trying to say is that the forums represent a small portion of the player base, and usually they are also mostly the part of the playerbase that wants to moan about every little thing. Someone that does not like that game or features usually finds a way to express themselves, people that are oke with the game will usually be to busy playing it to bother with forums.

I'd say buy it.

Yep, you are right Leverloos. I spend all my time in this game and I say: buy it right now. It's the game I've been waiting for years.

Wait for it to be on sale in steam...

I agree, summer sale isn't that far off.

And if you've waited this long, OP, you might as well drag your feet a little longer and perhaps get the game at a reduced price.

Fire up the BBQ, stock up on beers, get some mates over and enjoy the summer. ED isn't going anywhere. ;)

Get the game, Do the tutorials, Play SOLO until you have a firm grasp of space dog fighting and go from there. The only thing you truly should wait for is a joystick if you don't already have one.

If you want to play it safe, wait until the first paid expansion is released and see how things are at that point (reviews, reddit, gaming forums). Buying now would of course support FD in their current path. It´s still bit like buying into beta phase, some things are very solid (graphics, sound, immersion factor while flying) and others are very content barren (such as exploration) or still in development/buggy (missions, PP, etc).

Despite the bugs and weirdness that exist, and things that don't exist but should, there is a lot of actual game available here. The worst thing that can happen financially is you miss one night of Chinese takeout for the family. Unless they REALLY like chow mein, your monies won't be wasted even if you end up disliking the game.

Graham, you will have one regret if you buy this game.
And you'll have that regret whether you buy it now, or whether you wait a year.
What is that regret? That you didn't buy it sooner.

You should buy the game now, get yourself a cobra or asp then search these forums for the latest exploit to make more credits than is allowed (I say allowed because anything above 4000cr/T is frowned upon). Then you will be endgame ready in just a few days. Do it soon though as daily patches will reduce these opportunities.

Hello

I've been long looking at these forums nearly every day for the last few years (I don't post though). This has been THE game I've been waiting to be made since I played frontier on my Amiga back when I was a kid.

I wasn't involved in testing and I have not bought the game yet, the reason being is that I want to fully enjoy a fleshed out complete game to the fullest.

As you can imagine, looking at the forum since release, it has been alarming to say the least, and has put me off buying the game for some time...

However more than half a year has passed and, though I am eager to jump in, I really don't want to feel frustrated, not feel immersed etc... I want to increase the chances of being in love with the game from the start, not have the feeling of "I will be able to enjoy the game when the next patch comes out".

So do you think it's ready? Or shall I give it some more time?

Thank you

My advice would be to give it a little more time.

About 45 minutes should do then the upgrade to 1.3.02 should be complete.
Buy it then - it's awesome!
