For those who want to play Iron-Man

and most devestating... logging on with your IM toon after downing 5 pints thinking you are invincible! :D

Maybe we need a USB Breathalyszer to help, "I'm sorry Dave I can't let you do that, you have been down the pub too long to play IM."

I was on the fence until now, but after reading this thread I have decided that I will definitely try IronMan mode. The thrill will be great and I doubt that I will continue in normal mode if I die in IM (but that is still to be seen).

Not so unrealistic as you think :)

OK, so:

Back Elite Dangerous to Founder level £150
Buying Track IR goggles ~£180
New Saitek x52 pro £150
Beers to relax with £8

Being told you can't play by your new Talking-Breathalyzer after a couple... Priceless!

End result A) More beers to drown your sorrows
End result B) Get mad and New gaming Rig £1000+

:D

'Grumble'? I'm wondering if E: D could possibly be used as grounds for divorce with mine when it comes out... hehe

I will be having at least one char slot dedicated to IM mode, fair enough if my IM dies after a lot of time invested I might swap to normal mode with it but will still make another slot into an IM to play and 'level up' slowly.

Hopefully the IM playstyle will have far more of an edge where you really feel the consequences of making a mistake. I figure by its nature there will also be a more mature player base.

I mean with all the risks involved this will hopefully put off random gankers or kids, both needing to spend a lot of time evolving a character to make it powerful enough to pose a threat - to then risk losing it over a random fight? Probably won't happen. Then those that repeatedly start new IM characters to greif other players? They will also be so weak equipment / ship wise, they will be like swatting gnats after having played sencibly for a week or so.

Its the other serious IM players who will pose a risk, who hopefully will be like minded and mature ;) - a shot accross the bow screaming 'Yer cargo or yer life!'. Other main risks to concider would have to include general stupidity, not buying your escape pod as a second from a pound shop, and most devestating... logging on with your IM toon after downing 5 pints thinking you are invincible! :D

QFT! :D

There is a permadeath MMO called Haven & Hearth that I play. There is a lot of freedom in it. It is not unknown for some players to get hard and then bully / kill new players - however because doing this leaves tracks, evidence, it is possible to hire other hard player characters to hunt and kill those that do this. It is remarkably self-policing and I am thinking the bounty system in E:D may function similarly. Also the sheer size of the E:D galaxy will help with this I hope.

Will you be able to switch between IM and normal mode at will? Obviously not in game per se, but on a restart from the saved position?
If you have to ask this question, you're probably not ready for ironman!

Accept that eventually you're going to die and learn to let go.

I wonder if certain starting systems will develop characteristics, kind of in an emergent way. For example Lave might become a place where certain hard high ranking players offer their services as trainers or protectors to new players. Starting in a "Federal Border System" that is camped by IM players trying to raise their ranking by picking off new starters could be a lot more dangerous...
This could happen in the universe of immortals too of course but in E:D IM it certainly would be more.... significant...

Hyperbole much?

I wouldn't be under any illusions, there will be people who's only goal in life is to murder ironman players.

You know the highscore table in nethack? There basically all your previous characters are listed according to their achieved score, showing their reason of death.
I wouldn't mind a memorial. I'll probably end up deleting ironman pilots as they die, so some kind of permanent record of my ineptness would be nice.

Been reading more and more posts by people who want to play Iron-Man mode in E:D.
I have been pushing for this mode from the beginning and am really glad to see others interested now that is going to be implemented, but the galaxy is a big place and I feel there will not be huge numbers of us playing in this group, so lets connect here.
There are already a lot of threads debating the pros and cons but I thought I would start a thread for those already converted, so we can discuss in the context of already having decided to play this mode.
I have tried making threads about this mode before [example] and it always devolves into a debate for or against the mode itself. I hope that doesn't happen here but anyway...

What are we looking forward to in Iron-man mode? Speak up you Pirates, Explorers, Traders and Bounty Hunters who do not fear death but face it and feel the rush!

I've been playing a lot of DayZ (Alpha) for the last week or so. If people are unfamiliar with it, its one of the most popular selling games at the moment and is the work of Dean Hall - who previously created it as a mod on Arma2.

So with the intro out of the way - the game is full on ironman mode in anyway you can understand. You start off with nothing and have to gather up items and survive zombies and other players. Each time you die you start again. I haven't been able to stop playing it.. its probably the most immersive gaming experience I have ever played and your death really means something.

I'm not going to lie - it hurts dying because you lose all your stuff and have to start again but it drives the game-play especially because everyone else is in the same boat.

So coming back to ED, I think ironman mode could be awesome and the only key things that are against it is that compared to the non ironman players, you'll miss out on progression when you die. So whilst its not a DayZ situation, I think its still going to offer a heightened game-play experience.

Things look a little different when you really have something to lose. ;)

Totally with you on the Arma2 dayzmod thing. Truly sucks you in. I haven't played for a while I bet it has improved so I am going to go check it out again right now. Thanks for the reminder. I have been following Project Zomboid for a while too, might be of interest but updates have been a bit slow lately.
Anyway... off to play dayzmod now :D
<edit> ahh I see you linked to the DAYZ game, intersting apha thing going on there... Must. Spend. Money. </edit>

Played DayZ since it first came out. A great idea. The problems are pretty acute there though: 1. People are left with nothing to do but PVP once they have a decent weapon and/or vehicle. 2. The nature of the spawning there means you can become disaffected with waiting long periods to hook up with your friends. 3. Client side calculations are verrryyyy bad.

Once played DayZ for an entire week. Had a little bird and 6 cans of fuel. Buzzing Cherno was epic. Its the most fun gaming experience I have ever had: flying a chopper around a vast landscape, collecting my friends, and hunting others from a base of operations out in the woods. I also amused myself for days with the 'bang bus' concept. Find bus, fuel it up out of town, then drive the coast road advertising your bus service: then run over anyone dumb enough to step out of hiding. Hours of borderline personality entertainment. :)

How are you finding the Alpha btw? I'm yet to take the plunge on that one. I fear for my sex life.

I am guessing Pirate as your career choice, yes?

I'm glad you explained, because Google thinks that phrase means something very different

Pandemic Legion was my Alma Mater. So yeah, online terrorist. Not so much for profit. Mostly just because I'm a predator and haven't found anything half as thrilling as hunting nerds .. It really can't be beat. Such a thrill. Especially when they fight back! :p

I'll be Iron Man'ing it though. Anything else is just not fun. Mainly why I am so anti selective group switching: people will just abuse it horribly for advantage. Which takes a lot of the satisfaction out of hunting nerds.
