Oculus Livestream prior to E3 2015 ... Is Oculus giving up on Elite as a premiere title?

I was a bit disappointed with the rift reveal to be honest. Best thing for me was that adjustable ipd was confirmed as that's the main thing I struggle with in the dk2.

I might be being too harsh but when they revealed the rift ships with an Xbox controller I was so underwhelmed. It seemed to me like they were saying "we realised that vr needs a better input device and we've been working like mad to try and make it but we are not there yet. We realised that we can't let that delay release any longer or we will be eaten alive by the competition before we even get started. So we decided to just dump an Xbox controller in for now and be done with it".

As I say, I might be being too harsh.

And frontier not getting a mention for elite was odd.

I had been looking forward to buying the CV1 but the thought of paying for an Xbox controller that will go to waste (I have no interest in Xbox) is painful. And I wouldn't be able to use my Sennheiser G4ME One headset with CV1 as the CV1 already has earphones (but not mic). So, the CV1 offering is terrible - premium price for a useless Xbox controller and no mic.

I think the xbox controller will pretty much be included at a point not much above cost, plus it's a useful input for many VR scenarios. The earphones are detachable and as for the mic, I think we will need to wait and see. It won't have been overlooked ... Add on? Like the USB input on the DK2 maybe... Would be a way to keep the price point down.

I think we need to get some confirmation from Frontier about what the future holds. If they intend on a partnership elsewhere then I think we deserve to hear about it before pre-orders begin for the CV1. I don't want to end up with a CV1 and then Frontier announce an exclusive partnership with Steam.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason FDEV struggled with getting Direct Mode and 0.6.0.0 working is because Oculus purposely hindered their efforts in favor of their partnership with CCP.

Well, it seem Oculus decided to not even talk about Elite Dangerous. Seem stupid... This is the best VR game right now.
I seem clear that FD is working with Valve instead of Oculus now. Seem logical, Especially since Elite has been released on Steam.

Now Valve just need to show Elite with the HTC Vive at E3 and I will know what I'm going to buy.

Not mentioning the best VR game (and the only complete, released game with VR support at all) is just stupid. They're fuc*ing themselves.

Nope :p but that still doesn't make it a VR exclusive game... If sky stopped showing football I would unsubscribe but that doesn't make them a football exclusive satellite service. In DBs mind VR is very much an add on and I think it has (thus far) been a lost opportunity. Of course to the people in this sub forum... ED without VR probably isn't worth the time, but that hasn't been Frontiers marketing strategy at all because it wouldn't have been cost effective.

I don't think that will happen as Elite on the X-Box will then be excluded/limited and that would be a bad start...

As elite is a release game, the marketing departments would be looking at the new upcoming games, fresh content.

Releasing a game on Steam does not indicate that a company is somehow "in cahoots" with Valve; it's just smart business. Steam has tens-of-millions of users who might otherwise never have heard of Elite Dangerous.

That's like saying that CDProjectRED is "obviously working with Valve" because The Witcher 3 released on Steam, even though CDProject just released their own service that is a direct competitor to Steam!

At the end of the day, it's all about getting your product in front of as many people as possible, and until I see some direct evidence that FD have have ditched Oculus for the Vive, I see no reason to believe that to be the case.

I don't understand the angst about the Xbox one controller; It's a controller. Use it, don't use it, whatever but why does it offend people so much?

If it was a Saitek joypad, would you be happier? Is it just because of the Xbox connection?

Similar scenario - buy an iPod, it comes with earphones. If I wanted an iPod but didn't want the earphones, I'd just buy it and throw them away, put them in a drawer or give them to someone who could make use of them.

What's the problem?

... im willing to bet you an elite dangerous mug that you retract that that statement before it is released :p

I should have qualified that statement further. CV1 so far, for a DK2 owner, and based upon: a) the (likely?) US$300-ish price point; b) the bundling of useless junk (Xbox controller (sorry, but I have huge meat claws and holding those tiny little controllers is just painful, not to mention I haven't gamed on something resembling those pads since approximately 1998)) with it to push up the price; and c) of course, the huge outlay in hardware I'm going to need to bring my computer up to snuff for 90fps at high detail ... does not offer a particularly compelling reason for me to upgrade.
.
I'll probably just stick to my DK2 until CV2 comes out unless I am absolutely blown away by reports of users from the front who also had a DK2 and who rave about the difference in overall quality.
.
About the only thing that would change my mind is if there is a wider hardware FOV. That, might push me over the edge. I'm very m'eh about it at this point though.
.
Re the Vive, it might be a more compelling choice if Elite is going to provide dedicated support for it like they have been doing so far for the Oculus. If it comes in at a decent price point and doesn't fill up my drawers with useless $h1te, then I may be tempted, if only because I might be able to get by playing on its moderately increased resolution based upon my current hardware specs.

Because we are paying for it to be included. Be it $10 or $50, we are being forced to pay for something we will (very likely) never use.

No. People who don't use joypads, just don't need them added to the package. It's like when you want to order one channel from your service provider, they force you to buy a 'package'. I kinda' feel like that's what Oculus is doing with the controller and the headphones and it kind of makes me feel ... well, a little used. Maybe I'm reading into things too much ...

He said my controller (X52 Pro. The one that looks like I'm flying an actual spaceship in ED) was going nowhere. They showed some dumbass shooter. I was not impressed by this presentation at all. But you could see the Facebook influence with all the "Thumbs up" stuff. Nah. I'll wait before I commit. BTW I have been the pub, so if I got the gist of this wrong, sorry. Not going to watch that twice though.

I think the dual screens is enough to make it a must buy

I was wondering that too when I saw their featured games during the presentation.
Walking around in VR using a controller is as unnatural as it gets (and is one of the main causes for simulation sickness). The Rift as of now is really only applicable for games where the player is stationary or remains in the cockpit at all times. Like... I don't know... Elite: Dangerous?

I think game developers will have to learn how to design games for VR from scratch. It looks to me that they currently just apply existing and established game concepts and paradigms to those products. That's not how it's going to work in the long run.
Realistically we need additional peripherals like the Omni to be fully immersed in a 1st person video game. I hope to see new stuff from the Virtuix guys at E3. I backed it on Kickstarter and I'm dying to get my hands on it.
Something Frontier might consider to support once we can leave the cockpit. However the transition from your chair into the Omni will really break the immersion. But we'll see. :)

Nonetheless 2016 will be a great year for VR. I'm excited.

I found the Oculus conference very disappointing. They didn't mention price, specific release date, detailed specs. Shipping without proper VR input is a huge negative, especially considering Vive is releasing earlier WITH input. Regarding ED, we'll use a HOTAS anyway so it isn't that important but I feel like Oculus threw away their early advantage with the success of DK2. Vive has the same specs, better tracking and will ship with motion controllers. Rift is supposed to be a lot cheaper but it comes out months later as well. I hope FDev will support SteamVR, I think it would be stupid to be only on one platform.

The inclusion of a controller doesn't offend people because we think the controller is bad. It offends people because the price for the CV1 is higher to cover the cost of the controller. For those that don't want the controller because they have a better controller (e.g. Saitek X52 Pro), it is an unnecessary waste of money. There is no reason to bundle them. They would sell more of them if they weren't bundled. Because the earphones and controller are bundled with it, I won't buy it. The price would be almost half without the controller and earphones.
