Just bought Elite. Already made my first mistake!!

The mistake was buying from Steam!... Being trying to download for some time now. Downloaded 0 bytes

Tried some suggested fixes by googling but no luck... Doubt it will be my last mistake...

Sorry for your slow download.
Perhaps you should do it late at night when the traffic is lower.
I think that most of the new customers are from north america, try it after midnight eastern standard time.
Good Luck!

Welcome aboard :D, i would close down steam then reopen it and see if that helps, i have ED on both steam and from pre-steam both take around the same time to DL/update on my PC.

If it's any consolation downloading from Frontier's own servers can be problematic as well. I hope you get sorted and we'll get to see you out there in the void.

Steam has been quite efficient at downloading the game so far. I d say it could maybe be due to the summer sales?

Steam pre-allocates and installs while pausing the download on some games; i.e. the Total War series. The downloads are only 50 Mb if that but they take a long time without showing any bandwidth being used because the CPU and HDD are working. I'm assuming it's close to the same with Elite on Steam.

Had this problem downloading the game a second time on my laptop. I had to keep clicking to resume the download, every 1 minute or so, for about an hour. Then I checked out my connection, disconnected, reconnected and it seemed to work fine from there.

Yeah, these things happen. I'll get there sooner or later I'm sure. I don't let myself get too annoyed by stuff like this. I'll keep pressing buttons :)

Urgh, that's rough.

Once it's loaded, take this advice:

1. Read the manual - it really is useful. Lots of little bits of info that make clear a lot of things that could go wrong when you're flying. Hopefully, you'll be able to avoid them.

2. Do the practice missions before you start for real - basic stuff like how to take off, how to land, how to travel between systems, basic combat. It's very useful knowing this stuff.

3. Rebind the following keys:
(a) Boost - make sure this is nowhere near your landing gear key. Once your landing gear is down, you shouldn't be able to boost, but I put in a landing override so my boost key does yaw left instead while landing gear is down, just in case. So many pilot accidents have occurred while boosting by accident inside stations.
(b) Jettison All Cargo - put this key somewhere else. Make it a combo (ctrl-something) to be safe. This is something you will almost never find yourself in a situation needing to do quickly. And it is a really, really bad thing to do by accident.
(c) Rotational Correction - this makes your ship automatically correct to match the rotation of a station once inside. You pretty much always want this to be on. Have a key for it, and know what it is, just in case it gets turned off somehow. It's annoying having to find the manual toggle for it in your ship systems.

4. Once you're in the real galaxy, never fly without your insurance buyback - Insurance is paid when you first buy your ship. However you still have to cover an excess if your ship blows up, which is about 5% of the ship's value, plus 5% of any modules you've put on it. You need to have this amount of money (preferably three times this amount actually) so if your ship blows up, you don't lose the whole thing - you can buy back a replacement ship with only 5% of its value, as the rest is covered by your insurance. You can see your current ship's buyback value right under how much money you have in the right hand systems menu. DO NOT TAKE OFF WITHOUT THIS MONEY. Or take off, but be prepared to lose everything if you blow up.

5. Do not fly without insurance.

6. Do not fly without insurance. Seriously, so much rage has occurred because of people flying without insurance.

7. Have fun flying around in the galaxy, welcome to Elite!

Are some suggestion here on this forum for slow dl speed, 1 that seem to work for many is in browser go to tool -> internett altenatives-> go to internett Connections and then go to lan settings and untag everything save New setting and restart Windows and try dl again see if it fixes it.

Thanks for the advice Karakhian. I remember from my Frontier days on the Amiga that this is a steep learning curve. And I expect this to be the same!

As you said it will certainly not be your last mistake. Actually the downloading time will let you think about your next moments:
1) Pressing boost right inside a station;
2) Pressing fire in the same exact station where you respawned;
3) Getting too close to a star (sure they look pretty don't they?);
4) Pressing boost right in front of the mail slot (what, you thought you would make it through full speed the first time?);

X) And so on and son on... Welcome to Elite :D

Oh and by the way: your Sidewinder is free, no matter how many times you respawn. Use it unwisely and crash as much as you can, it's free! Other ships won't give you that chance.

so far i havent had any issues with steam and ED. download was quick and updates were as well.

if you want the steam overlay to take screenshots be sure to activate the f12 option in the overlay and remove the f12 keybinding in controls... its used for those that use Rift.

Pressing boost in a station sounds like fun... Why ease out of a car park at 10 mile an hour when you can speed out of it at 80mph in second gear?

Oh, it is fun.

It's accidentally pressing boost when you're facing your landing pad or a wall that's the problem.

There's nothing quite like the sense of total personal failure you get when you pancake into the station wall three inches below the slot.
