I am disappointed with the 1.3 update. Feels like all Power and no Play. Frontier pushed the Powers part out now and left the Play part to come later when they've fixed it.
I enjoyed playing this game in a private group of my friends, I enjoyed forming a wing and taking on challenges together, and most of all I enjoyed returning to the station with said friends to happily call it a good day's work. Now with 1.3 it is gone, all gone, every single bit of the cooperative gameplay 1.2 had brought has been either destroyed or bug ridden.
Simply trying to login to a private group you get some sort of adjudication error garbage. Then there is the slight stutter of other ships in supercruise during the peak hours, usually on the weekends. Did the hamster powering the server get sick? Or maybe it died, I did recall the servers going down all together the other weekend.
Trying to simply form a wing with your friends is arduous at best. The requests never get through, the voice comms never get through, the text messages never get through, the darn online status never even gets through, it's like the server doesn't even want to try. You and your friends have to relog over and over and over until by the grace of god, and the alignment of the planets, the server decides to take off from its coffee break and connect you together.
Oh, but it doesn't stop there. When you finally meet your friend face to face in whatever instance you decided to meet in be it a res, cz, or even outside a station, should you move even 5 or 6 km away from your friend they will fall off the edge of the universe. They show up as disconnected and get booted to another instance while the server picks its nose and your friend spams you with messages on steam asking what the hell just happened. Oh and should you be in a res with you as the escort and they as the miner, you get to twiddle thumbs while your friend gets blown to smithereens by the pirates, because wasting your time wasn't good enough but wasting your credits is even better. And it sure takes a good long few minutes for the server to say oops and reconnect them to your instance if they aren't already gone, floating debris, or gone to sleep.
So the solution seems obvious right, hug your friend's rear like the dog that belonged to the loneliest housewife. Oh what's that? The entire instance crashed and forced you and every single friend of yours in the same instance to your desktop with some crash report window all at the same time? Yea that sounds about right. Again this issue happens only at peak hours of the day.
Oh no, I forgot about the drones! Who could forget how the drones are such utter failures in wings! Seriously, I have not a single clue why drones are not immune to collision damage with the PARENT ship. Put two CMDRs together, have one dump cargo, and have the other try to pick it up with drones and see how it goes. Yep that's right, a whole ton of booms and Collection Failed message spam. 9 out of 10 drones just go blammo against your hull/shield in the general vicinity of your cargo hatch. The cargo gets delivered despite the false Collection Failed message but at pretty much a 1:1 ratio in limpets to get it. Want your friend's 40 gold? Hope you got 40 limpets. Oh and make sure you drop no more than 20 at a single time either, sure glad I'm not a pirate. Keep in mind if your wingmate moves say 6km out your drones will start working as per normal without them crashing into your hatch, but your wingmate is likely going to be pulled into the void of a new instance for the next 5 minutes as well.
From what my friends and I could tell the whole server side networking for wing members seems to have gone to hell and is staying there to burn anyone interested in co-op. With the recent patches to this day the only fixes we have seemed to notice are the adjudication server issues having disappeared and collector drones no longer playing follow the leader.
I miss wings, they were fun and engaging for playing with friends. Oh well.
