Diamondback Explorer

The large hardpoint is well placed for a turret, which can help compensate for the maneuverability. However, it feels even more power-starved than the Vulture - good luck getting everything A-rated on this one.

Tried that a couple of days ago, but it's a waste of a large hardpoint. Look at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=140240, you'll see that a large turreted beam does as much damage as a medium fixed pulse. Sold her with some regret, since she does have character. Now that AIs are more aggressive and a lot less derpy, all ships need to be able to tank shields or be agile - the explorer can do neither.

When I first saw a pic of this, I instantly thought "MI-24 HIND" OMG....but then I saw the name, "Explorer" - I lost all hopes of this being a combat vessel, I just hope they release a combat variant as I like the gunship aesthetics.

The DBE is not that slow. The good heat management allows to stay close to the sun and start spooling the FTL while finishing scooping.
Plus, it has around 10% more range per jump than the T6 (which scoops faster).

And yes, the ASP is faster, but in it's ideal configuration, it costs 4x as much.

Diamondback scout. Two medium, two small, 4 utility. Base shields a bit better than a viper, top speed and boost comparable to cobra, 25LY jump range, about as maneuverable as a vulture.

I would like to do some pirating with a decent jump range (PP reasons). Would you guys recommend a DB (DBX or DBS whichever) ? Cheers.

If you want to explore and thus have a the best jump range then going A rated wont help, go for the lighter D rated modules for all but the essentials (ie; fsd) and there are no power issues and a better range.

I agree that the DBX needs a little bump to make it more appealing. At the moment it just feels a bit worse than all the alternatives.

The DBX may fair better as you'll get at least 16t cargo in there.

You can do 16T in a DBS too, I have that in mine just now. As a cheapish little run around multipurpose ship the DBS is great and I enjoy mine immensely. However, I have to be honest the Cobra is probably better for a small all rounder. The DB class will probably die off completely if and when the resale of modules is subject to depreciation charges.

Interesting, I will look more at the scout. But in all honesty neither still fit the bill of being "Satan's chariot" asthe HIND is nicknamed, I was just hoping for more from them, maybe extra hard points on the wing perhaps.

I have no idea of the technicalities, but from using it, I found lasers in the large hardpoint seemed to burn out far too quickly to give it the combat prowess I would have liked. Theoretically you could have run a large beam and two medium cannons and been a threat to the vulture, but I just don't see this happening.

I'm currently using the Diamondback Explorer for my largest exploration journey so far, to Sagittarius A, and I really am loving this little ship! It literally never over-heats unless I deliberately try to make it, and it's jump range is perfect.

Nah it's so cheap in comparison to the asp there has to be some downside, for the price it's an excellent option for exploration as far as I can see.

Actually the DBX and the Asp are pretty similar in price once you start upgrading. 5D and 6D equipment is far superior to 4A and several Million CR cheaper for some reason.

Maybe, but as I said earlier, you'll be hamstringing the jump range on the DBX if you go for a full A fitting, so going down the D route makes the DBX cheaper again.

I use DBX for exploring. Combat is useless because it's turn rate is awful even with A class thrusters.

Even D-rated, the Explorer and Asp are remarkably similar in price. The base price of the Asp is 300% of the Explorer, but with the D rated price on both ships, the Asp is only 20% more! And the rebuy costs are almost the same.

With this build, the Asp will scoop all its fuel in under 10 seconds (less than the FSD cool down timer) and will boost to just under 400 speed, with far better agility as well.
